Hey everyone, sorry for impending newbiness >_> I use a laptop and will post the specs in a bit...

Really keen to play this game, I downloaded the platinum version from Steam, but after five minutes of playing (usually on the first campaign I get about as far as going outside in the tutorial area) the game freezes, the sound freezes at whatever point its at (resulting in a sustained "KKKkRRRRRRRRR" sound), then the sound resumes, the cursor moves again but no other visuals move, resulting in me having to ctrl alt del and stop the process.

I've tried running in compatibility mode, tried running then ctrl alt del'ing and setting the games affinity to one CPU (instead of 4, and never using CPU 0), tried installing Direct X 9, making sure my graphics card is up to date and making sure the game itself is up to date, none of these approaches have changed anything.

I tried lowering my graphics settings, as initially I thought my laptop was overheating (still might be, the cooling fan goes crazy when this games been running), but I have a cooling pad and am still able to render full 3D animations with Maya and play other games like Just Cause 2 with graphics set to pretty high.... So I'm really at a loss here...

My specs are:

Windows 7 Home Premium
System Type: 64-bit OS
Intel® Core™ i5 CPU M 520 @2.40GHz 2.40 GHz
4GB RAM

Display adapters (two listed)
Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator HD
NVIDIA GeForce GT 325M

Thanks in advance, really keen to get this working.

P.S.: Tried running game in compatibilty mode as administrator: windows XP SP 2, and that seemed to get me a little further (as far as the training dummies...), but still crashed. The game runs perfectly smoothly up until that freeze

Intel's video chip simply isn't up to the job, sorry (I can't believe I looked right past the second entry in the graphics).  However, the 325M and the 335M are extremely choosy about drivers and how the BIOS in the system is set up.

Hi Gorath, thanks for the reply.

the NVIDIA GeForce card is the default one on my system if that's any help. :) And the game runs perfectly smoothly when I start, so I can walk around in the tutorial section etc, it just freezes abruptly after about 5-15 minutes.

suspect over heating mainly? This is after a given amount of time regardless of what you are doing i am assuming. NWN2 is well known for pushing graphics chips harder than the other things so testing other programs does not really say much.

( There are tools to control your graphics chip clock speed and monitor heat in the system you can google. )

The Intel chip is probably the one that is having the problem (yes, I edited my earlier comment). nVIDIA's drivers don't all afford proper functionality for the switching option. It's been a serious problem for all of their switching graphics hardware. If the correct discrete device is in fact the one having difficulty, you may need to lower the screen resolution. The 325M is somewhat marginal for its performance compared to the 335M.
