I just watched the Kinect Demo and boy, there seemed like a TON of cutscenes, WAY more than actual gameplay. Now, I understand that was a demo and for a specific purpose, but I noticed this trend in ME2, which seemed (at least to me) more reliant on cutscenes to tell the story than ME1. Granted my mind may be foggy since its been awhile since I played both, but do you support this possible trend for the ME3? The cutscenes are beautiful and cinematic, but it just seems that more of the story is being told through them, which inherently take control from the player. Also, I could just be wrong about the trend since its been awhile since I played ME1.
Is the ME series becoming too cutscene reliant?

It really depends on what you're trying to do with your game. For something like Mass Effect it works fine, while games like Bioshock work better with next to no cutscenes. It really depends on the directing of the game, the same way that in films some directors work better with certain films than others.

tbh mass effect 3 seems to convey a lot more outside of cut-scenes than before - the earth demo, for instance with the "invasion" actually taking place more-or-less real-time. that's a big improvement, especially from a technical standpoint.

there was plenty of "cutscenes" in ME1 as well.
i dont think theres any more than usual or that i expected less. hell i like it when the game gets dialogue heavy lol.

Technically, the cutscenes are gameplay. You make choices, those choices have consequences, and those consequences affect the outcome of the game. From what I've gathered there will be alot of gunplay in ME3, which I think might actually be a problem. I love a good story, and if they focus too much on the gameplay aspect and not enough on the story, I will be sad. But it's Bioware so I have faith in them.

You watched the demo which was specifically designed to show off the VR ability of the Kinect, and that included being able to make the selections with your voice during the cutscenes. Of course its going to look like its more cutscene than gameplay.
Watch the gameplay demos, and it shows more pew-pew and very little RPG elements.
Golden Rule: Dont make assumptions based on what you see in demos which are designed to show off specific elements of the game.

Ditto this. I don't see the game as being "reliant" on cutscenes. I see the action weaving together with the cutscenes for an ultimately better gaming experience. Of course, that's just my personal opinion.Good Chaos7 wrote...

Depends on how you view them. For me, ME is like watching a sci fi movie but instead of watching it, you're actually living it. Cutscenes add more cinematic depth into it and I like em'.
