I'm surprised no one didn't bring this up. I don't have a picture of it, but in one of Shepard's skill trees show that he can give bonuses to his team. In that skill tree squadmates were acknowledge as henchmen. I'm a bit surprised that BW decided to use a different term for our team, since calling the npc's squadmates follow the consensus.

Personaly I prefer to call the members of my team squadmates, the title henchmen has a evil association (imo), something that best suits a villian.

When I saw that, my mind was pretty much all of the "WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?!" pictures combined...

Seriously hope it won't be that way in the finished game. I'll save the term "henchmen" for when my squad is comprised of the Blood Pack and Blue Suns mercs, instead of talented, loyal combatants, some of which have been with you since Day 1, and have saved your life numerous times.

I hope that's just an internal Bio term. IIRC the DAO scripts refer to henchmen even thought that game's term is "companion."

Henchmen might be a separate thing entirely from your Companions. Like at the end of DAO when you summoned your armies to assist.

But if its not, Squadmates is the term they should use.

Please use the proper terms; there is an established hierarchy in these matters:

1) minion - usually they are in groups of eight or more
2) henchman - found in smaller groups of between three and six
3) flunky - no more than three, and usually have individual responsibilities
4) lieutenant/loveslave/best buddy - one

There are more categories and subgroups, of course, but these are the standard ones.

Thinking only of gaming and not "proper" definitions...

Henchmen to me are like mercenaries, able to be used/hired/recruited for battles but are not steady companions or members of your squad. Companions are members of your squad/team. That is the way I see it anyway. It would be weird for them to switch from already commonly used terminology to a new one at the last minute.

I definitely prefer squab night" Henchmen" always makes me think of dudes in masks Spiderman is beating up while delivering a snappy one-liner.

that might just be me.

Given how much weaker they are than the main character henchman is kind of fitting.

Henchmen makes your team (squad) members sound like a disorganized band of hoodlums rather than the elite soldiers, assassins, and specialists that they are.

Squadmate would have been a more appropriate term for them... henchmen are what the leaders of mercenary bands, criminal organizations or common criminal leaders use.

It's also a available option to "signal your henchmen" on Mordin's recruitment mission when you're encountering those batarians.

Henchmen is used on Mordin's ME2 recruitment, and several other places.
I prefer squadmate; however, henchmen may be appropriate in certain limited situations where Shepard and his/her squad are out to do maximum carnage to an enemy.

I hate the term henchman. Makes me think of pets you get in MMO's or characters in Fallout games that have no depth and are only there to help you in combat. Companions, followers, or squadmates would all be better terms to use.

Squadmate is better, for all of the reasons listed above, and also because I feel it's more appropriate to the setting. It will probably irk me if they keep 'henchmen' as the standard term, but it's nothing gamebreaking.

I don't like 'henchmen' for science fiction. It sounds archaic at best, comedic at worst - which, unless you're going for the Austin Powers thing as SarcasticT pointed out, is probably not appropriate. It's better in a fantasy setting imo, though still conjures up images of the stereotypical 'Mwahahahahaaaaaaaa' bad guy's goons. The word also reminds me of the companion characters in Neverwinter Nights (they were referred to as henchmen), and particularly Tomi Undergallows, who I very much wanted to kill.

That is kind of a funny term for squad mates. I got a little curious and decided to check out the general definition for the word.

a trusted follower or supporter who performs unpleasant, wrong, or illegal tasks for a powerful person (such as a politician or criminal)

I don't believe I really want the members of my squad being referred to along those lines. It is funny though. There could even be a seen in which Shepard refers to them as henchman and Garus takes offense.

Placeholder.

Note that in the game files of ME2 squadmates are identified as "henchmen" in the codes, but are identified as squadmates in the final version of the game.

I prefer the term squadmate, or party member.  When I hear the word henchman, I think of supervillains and their mooks.

I prefer squadmates. Though you can tell jokes about how henchmen is a sexist term that should be replaced with "henchperson". So each have draw :)

I think henchmen isn't too inappropriate a term if you think about it, in me3 your an alleged war criminal/terrorist that just escaped trial cause some massive ships started obliterating the planet. Not that that is my view of Shepard and co but its how most people must view him from the outside.

I'll leave that for Khalisa al-Jilani to refer to my squaddies as.

Besides, "henchmen" makes you think of controlled goons, whereas "squadmate" sounds like somebody who's your equal, and who you trust. You can go on and on about how Shepard is Chuck Norris and he owns the universe etc etc, but I always think of him as one of the group when I'm playing. Just because he's the leader doesn't make him better than anyone.
