UPDATE #4 on Todd the Sorcerer (skip this if you don't like reading short stories):
<sigh>, More trudging around underground! I'm afraid that AO has decreed that we are to spend a significant portion of our Quest to Solve the Bhaal Debacle here in the Underground.
On the advice of one of my Dreams, we went back to the elemental portals we found and finished killing all the elementals. It was good to have the Gift tell me that there were only ten elementals to kill per portal!
I gave up figuring out where the Imprisoned mage might be. (That awful Satan's Spell, as I will call it henceforth in my journal, leaves absolutely no sign of where it has been cast, either to mundane senses or magical senses; even the Gift cannot find any trace of the pour souls who have been sentenced to this by some demonic Evil, truly placed in Hell (the way the religious people from my Earth believed in it), for all eternity with little hope for escape! Well, without the burning. But physical pain might actually be a welcome distraction if you were in Hell...)
The only defense against this spell cast from the people who want to be liches (who else would resort to such Evil...), is to have friends! At least five of them! And a liberal inventory of Freedom scrolls. (Praise Oghma for the priests who devote their lives to creating these precious scrolls!)
Ah, but I digress. (Bear with me, dear reader.) We did find a clue when we found an abandoned archaeologist's camp. (Well, that's the best we're going to get. If we waste an expensive Freedom scroll, so be it.)
Well, I cast the scroll, and my hunch was right! The mage appeared, and was most grateful. I can only guess that he had not been Imprisoned for long, and that maybe the madness of Imprisonment affects people differently, because he wanted to continue his original mission! He was clearly insane, the poor guy!
Out of mercy, and also curiosity, we helped him finish his mission through the portals. It mostly involved defeating a few elementals for him, then waiting patiently for him to return to us. At the end of a couple of days worth of waiting for him, he rewarded us with a magic rod that reflects spells. Nothing that will be very useful to us, but he seemed so happy, it made me feel good to accept the rod and celebrate with him, and wish him well on his way.
*******************
The next day, we came upon a svirfneblin village, and they asked us to help them defeat a monster and save their village, yadda, yadda, yadda.
The monster turned out to be a Balor! Just before going into the key cavern, I had Ano say prayers of protection over us, (Chaotic Commands x6), because we had no idea what was in there. (Would you believe he forgot to pray over us one-by-one for Fear protection? Ano, you are truly a muscles-for-brains guy. <sigh>, I often wish Ano were gay, because I would be
so into him (sorry, Faren, but come on, muscles as big as rocks, that chestnut hair and beard, those piercing eyes, those huge lips, that confident swagger - how about we make a pact that Ano is our "freebee" if he ever "turns", hmmm? I know you like bears, because you like me...))
Ahem, yes, well we defeated the Balor after I had to go running out into the corridors to protect and try to get a Fear-removal spell cast on Ano, while Kelley and Jaheira finished off the Balor.
The mayor of the village was very grateful, and rewarded us, and we also got a reward from the village blacksmith, whose son we had saved from Imprisonment (brrr, I still don't know how people sleep at night in this world, sometimes!)
And we were told how to descend to the next level down <sigh>, and find our way to Irry and Bodhi through the drow, by talking to some "Magic Lady of Light" we're supposed to meet down there....
So we went looking, but I couldn't resist exploring a small area where we had fought some lizard people first, and, gosh-dang-it-to-heck, we fell down a hole and got ......
TRAPPED. By Illithids. Great. Just, freakin'. Frackin'. Great.
They were trapping slaves to fight in one of their arena games. (What in the world
motivates these super-intelligent aliens, who spend all their time hiding on worlds where the technology has no chance against theirs, and they conduct ...... arenas? <Sigh>, I guess they're like the Gamesters of Triskellion or something.)
Oh well, Illies are basically no match for us, as long as we have Ano to pray to Helm for protection.(Chaotic Commands). Oghma, is there any chance I could be a priest for you? It would seem awfully nifty if you could give me the power to make my friends and me immune to horrible, evil monsters, the way Helm does for Ano. Not that I'm complaining or anything about the powers you
do choose to give me, but the ability to deal with evil mages and monsters in those very, very rare instances where I'm needed, just doesn't seem to stack up half the time..... But, oh, well, thank you Oghma, for giving me powers that protect me from mooks and occasionally help big time with battles against strong stuff.
Geez, sorry, Oggy, that wasn't much of a prayer of gratitude, was it?
<Ahem>, so we beat the illithids, freed their slaves, (I could write a chapter or two on the adventure, but who would read it?), and made it back to the svirfneblin village).
Tomorrow we will find the Lady of Light...
Oh, BTW, I made fifteenth level, finally. New spells are Shadow Door, Improved Haste, and Spell Sequencer (the three-spell kind).
