I didn't see on the site where you could enter a computer model instead, as my issue is that I'm not looking to see what I can play on a laptop I have, but rather I'm looking to purchase a laptop and want to know before I buy it if it will play the game.

The only onboard solution that is "CLOSE" to usable for games right now is the "Llano" APU, a combined set of four CPU cores and a Radeon HD graphics array in the same chip, sold in some select high quality (graphicswise) medium price portable PCs.  It's still a Low End choice with which you don't get high resolutions or high image quality, being basically similar to the HD 6450 card's performance.

So: below 400, (30 on a Geforce), you have only the equivalent of the old, very slow integrated video; undesireable for games.  Below 500 (40 on a Geforce), you have BUSINESS quality, not truly for games, like that Llano isn't, not really.

Below 600 (50 on a Geforce), you have a borderline "budget gaming" area that's fairly good to handle entertainment.

Below 800 (70 on a Geforce), you have the primary classes of Mainline Game cards, the "mediums", which normally include the cards that offer the best comparsion of speed versus cost ("Bang for the Buck").  The HD 5670 holds onto the top of that ladder for a second year now.

The High End cards are the performance at all costs top of the heap, where Geforces tend to stay at the pinnacle.

(Lastly) Once upon a time, while Alien was an independent boutique PC builder, they had a reputation for selling overpriced systems that almost always could play whatever the current games of the time were. The former owner received offers from Dell that swayed his mind. Now, the Dell PCs with the Alienware look and name are still expensive, but all too often it's only a skin deep and superficial resemblance to the Alien PCs of the old days.

Many Dell-manufactured "Aliens" cannot play games particularly well at all, so the years-ago sobriquest "Buy Alien" has become meaningless

I decided to use the OP message, with suitable edits to make it more general, as a basis for a local "can you run it" in the DA2 General Subjects forum.  Thank you, Rose, for the encouragement.

You want a laptop like this:

http://www.newegg.co...N82E16834215119

It's the bottom line for a gamer.

Real gamers don't use laptops. Expecially those cheap laptops. If a GT 540M is considered "bottom line" for a gamer, I think I'm inappropriate for this discussion. However It must be said the resolution of the screen is appropriate for that kind of card.

The topic creator is referencing laptops, which is what I assume he/she wants.

I'm not talking about elitist gamers who can't settle for a PC unless it's at least $1000 USD. My example shows how little you can pay for something that's still latest generation tech and can easily play all of today's games at moderate settings.

(My personal setup is a desktop, though:

AMD Phenom II x6 3.3ghz
AMD Radeon HD 5850 1GB
8 GB DDR3 RAM)

The problem with laptops has always been the great disparity between an average one, and anything reasonably decent. The average keeps on getting worse every year, with buyers and sellers failing to differentiate between "sub- level" varieties and full-power ones.

The low prices for the mini-NetBook devices have influenced the sellers of the Notebook PCs in the mid-market, who have bypassed the latest of the Intel chipsets and processors in favor of older, and cheaper ones, such as the "Pentium Dual" with a five year old chipset and equally old video chip, in order to offer the lowest possible prices.

Normally, I wouldn't suggest a laptop for any serious gaming. However, the topic creator wants one.

I'm just giving the best advice within that category, assuming that he/she wants to maximize performance per dollar in the current market without spending a grand.

Did you read that as a disagreement regarding some sort of "best out of a poor lot" advice? I already know that the unwashed masses are ignorant and uninterested in relieving that ignorance. They will set aside perfectly decent desktop PCs that with only a few dollars' worth of upgrades would play games for years in favor of the popular choice they see on TV all the time, the smaller, the better, and performance isn't what they are looking at, it's just the prices vs. the sexy looks.

AMD may be able to break some of that bad performance situation with Llano and Trinity; that remains to be seen.

You seemed to be responding to me, no? You explained how horrible most laptop choices are. It doesn't take much to link your explanation to the assumption that I was suggesting a laptop was a good idea or a better option.
