To put it another way. All this focus on romance are ruining the game.

Also relevant, OP: Have you ever played a Bioware game? Other than ME?

Romance subplots have been a hallmark of their games for more than a decade.

Have played ME and ME2, that's it. No others BW games.

So...you think movies should also be free of the romance subplot? Do you happen to be from this latest generation that likes the prequels?

No,  but, seriously a romance doesn't have to be shoved in every movie... but, that really doesn't have anything to do with the topic at hand really.

Because I don't play Mass Effect just for the gameplay.

Shoved? No. Never ("I don't like sand"). But when it provides for good (well written) character moments, by all means. And it does have something to do with the topic at hand: ME is built cinematically.

There are apparently opinions about this and that's fine. But why can't the BW explain why they choose this line of gameplay? Instead of having you to explain what they think and defend them.

They explain it by putting these options in the game in the first place. Here, I'll explain it for you:

They want to.

The devs don't frequent the forums enough (and by that I mean, nearly not at all) to answer questions like these. The few times that they do, it's usually about gameplay itself or fanteasing. I suggest you take this question to Twitter if you want an actual Bioware answer and you may not even get it.

Romances don't ruin the game, they actually help the game for the immersion of it. Play ME1 and ME2 and don't talk to any squadmates or have no romance options, and you feel distant or an outsider. There's no point in fighting, when you have nothing to fight for, except for survival. Playing the game becomes complacent and unnecessary when you fight for the sake of fighting.

In a game, when you have someone to talk to, or someone that cares about you, it seems real to you. It makes you want to care about your character and his squadmates along with their future. Its just like life, you want friends, and you want someone to love.

I mean face it, all games are an escape from reality, so if you make them more life like, there more enjoyable it become, because it makes you miss/want/obtain the things missing in your life. Whether its love, friends, or the joy of being a hero.

Then why you don't send a gentle email or a message via Twitter (they answer to those pretty often) to BioWare instead of start whining about the fact that romances will ruin the game, in the place where are all the fans of the romance feature?

I'd recommend PMing a mod and asking them then. I highly doubt you'll get an answer on the forum. That said, again - they've always included them. They expand the characters and enrich the roleplaying for many people. They're one of the only developers who does it, and that's awesome.

If you're solely focused on the gameplay, I doubt you'll be disappointed. But on the offchance that you are, there's no shortage of gun games with space marines and no romance whatsoever.

Thanks for that, I might do so. Have a nice weekend.

Like it or not BioWare opened up the pandoras box of romances in games years ago. They became popular and thus it is expected that most BioWare games will have romances. I can guarantee you that if they made ME3 and gave no romance options that many people would be up in arms about it.

As always they are totally optional and can usually be shut down with one or two conversation lines.

Okay kids, you can now continue alone. But don't be afraid if someone don't agree with you. I guess mom is close by. :(:(

I'm not sure I understand the issue here. If you don't like the romance part, don't have one. Unlike a romance in a movie or a book, its entirely skippable. Its not like you'll be blocked out of sections of the game if you are single.

Unless, of course, the Reapers have a dinner party you need to bring a date to. That would be awkward.

Sorry mate, but I disagree with you there, one of my favorite parts of ME2 is romancing tali, and romancing characters is a big feature of BW games

Look, I don't think that's what ME romances are for.
