Well we cant actually answer that. You would have to ask Bioware.   They decided she was worth giving a trailer too and given a place on the CE Box.   I think many of us were just as suprised by the news as you were!

To be honest I too thought Bioware strategy was set in stone so all I hoped was for more then four screenshots this time around!   :P

Regardless  Bioware clearly sees a audience they now want to please and capture.  Femshep is a great protagonist and they decided she worth spending some time on.   Plus I think her audience is bigger then most people realise.  Theres this conception that femshep fans are a small minority.   A recent poll on facebook saw over 1/3 of people prefer femshep out of almost 20,000 votes cast and David said that he recieved hundreds of tweets about femshep.  Clearly Bioware believed that audience was big enough to cater more then a few screenshots too.

Plus as said if Bioware thought it would hurt the brand image by showing her on the box and in a trailer they wouldnt do it.  They are a business afterall.   It seems so far though its paying off,  the feedback by the media has been great and has really caught on.  Over a dozen sites are now displaying the news.

I had already stated my opinion over this and was quite content with just reading other's responses and reaction, but then I see a handful of folks comment on how they can't understand why some people object to it.
I can't speak for everyone but I don't think people are objecting to it as much as they just don't see it as a necessary thing. I mean, some of you are confused on why some have a strong opinion against it, but you, in turn confuse the same people with your strong feelings on why it HAS TO BE.
If it's not a big deal, as some of you state, then why do it?

So much hypocrisy...but I guess that is the norm in these forums.

To please fans? Like Bioware has always done? What exactly is wrong with that?

Nothing wrong with it, but some folks think it's an entitlement and something that has to be done, and I say why the big deal if they didn't do it.  Does it convince you not to play as a FemShep if there isn't a FemShep trailer or a FemShep on the cover?

Actually, it IS a big deal, just not something that should ruin anyone's enjoyment of the game.

It is a big deal because it will be the first appearance of FemShep in any advertising medium.  It is a big deal because it is showing recognition and respect for the female players and those who prefer the story be told with a female lead.  (and for that matter, it is a big deal because it isn't treating the female voice actor like a second class character)  It is a big deal because female characters rarely get box space unless they are being oversexualized to sell a product.

It is a big deal, because it is a step forward.

So, since it is such a big deal to the people who want it, why can't the rest just be happy for them?

Well I never thought it would hurt the brand, I think what Bioware is doing is an excellent marketing strategy.  It's win-win for them.
Since 2007 they used the default male Shepard to brand Mass Effect...I would say that is an established icon for their game which has been very successful.  They realize that some of their loyal player base like to play Shepard as a female, so they commit a piece of art work for the Collector's Edition cover.  Most of the time, CE's are purchased by the die-hard fan of that IP, because they are more expensive and most people picking up the game for the first time are not going to fork over extra money for the swag.  The move makes them look like they care about their player base, even the "minority" (quoted for a reason, not my word), but it doesn't dent the brand they have established over the last 4 years, and all it took was a piece of art work that included a default FemShep that they had to produce anyway.

I know we would all like to think that Bioware does everything in the best interest of their player base, but bottom line: they are a company wanting to make money.  I am betting that during a marketing meeting, they thought that including a female Shepard on the tin of the CE might sell some more CE to the FemShep fan base.  I mean think about this...why don't they make two different tins for the CE? One with Male one with Female.  Well, because that would be extra expense. :P

Anyway, I blathered on for too long now.  In the end, it doesn't affect my game or how I play the game, so great.  I just take issue with folks that take issue with others that may not like it, although they made such a big deal of it being excluded in the past.    It just doesn't matter.

Sure...but I disagree...it's not a big deal....it's not some huge gaming cultural epiphany.

Feminists agenda?

How the hell is feminist agendo to put FemShep ALONG SIDE with Sheploo?

And that's only Collector Edition.

Also I never hide that I'm ManShep fan and prefer playing with him then FemShep, but I WANT to have FemShep along side with Sheploo even on standard edition.
It's a fair game.

None of them will get overshadowed like FemShep was for past 2 games.
Plus it works for the marketing.

That doesn't have to do with BioWare as a company. FemShep doesn't deserve less recognition because "supposedly" most of her fans on this fourm dislike MaleShep, ya know?

No.

Some people who play femShep bag on maleShep, just like some who play maleShep bag on femShep.

Female Gamer. Play FemShep, but I like Sheploo just as equally. They are the same character, only difference is gender and voice actors (which I both like as well).

They have a different opinion! Blasphemy. Seriously, just ignore them.

Personally, I like to think that MaleShep, and by extension we dudes in general, can handle a little bashing, since we've been hogging the spotlight and robbing the ladies of their recognition for, lessee, three thousand years.

Joystiq for me is kind of like... a slightly less obnoxious version of Kotaku. :P I know they try joking but the majority of the time the jokes are... not so good, either that or it's a pretty crappy job at mocking. I haven't quite decided which (leaning more towards bad joke). I can't get over the fact that a lot of these articles are so incredibly biased one way or another. This is coming from a FemShep fan. It's one thing to be happy about the wonderful news but when journalists come off sounding pompous, it reflects badly on the rest of us. I know unbiased journalism, especially in the gaming world, is near nonexistent but cut us some slack! (PS teethes is such a wonderful word...)

Femshep in charge, guns for everyone!
Personally, I don't see how this is newsworthy. They are using both of the actual canon characters on the cover. No need to blow a gasket.

I haven't seen any maleshep bashing in this thread, only people saying they are sick of only seeing Sheploo in advertising - so, in relation to this thread, you're assertion is incorrect.  And, since this thread has attracked quite a few pro-femSheppers, I'd say you're generalization of "most" is incorrect in its entirety.

Besides, "she hit me first" stopped being a mature defense in middle school.

Closer to Ten Thousand years, actually.  Sure that doesn't hold true for every culture at every point in time, but by and large women have been the single most long lived, oppressed minority in all of history ... I think we can give them the back of a game box.

Considering it took them three games to do it, it must be news worthy.  Not to mention, it is kind of a big deal for Jennifer Hale, considering up until now her - supposedly equally viable - FemShep character was getting no real face time ... effectively being disregarded by the game's marketing department.  That would be akin to advertising a movie with two leads, but only showing the face of the male lead in trailers and posters.  (Only showing Fox Mulder in X-Files adds, or ... actually, can't think of another series with equal male and female leads, but I don't watch a lot of t.v.)

No, because let's face it, THAT might confuse people.  (people, many of them don't think)

Besides which, then every preorder would have to ask which cover they wanted and shiping mistakes would cause mass uproar and if a supplier ran out of X face cover they would suffer accusations of bias, returned games, etc.

Better to place them both on the cover in equal measure, fewer logistical issues in the long run.

FemShep gets to be on the cover of the CE, which only returning fans would buy. And she's only on the back cover. Your standard edition is safe from her womanly clutches.

She finally gets ONE trailer after 6 years of Sheploo advertising and marketing and some people are pissing stones. Oh noes! The wimmenz are taking over! The amount of selfishness some people are displaying in this thread is baffling.

The whole thing is ridiculous. If you get angry about femshep being on the cover, you are ridiculous.

Sheploo is ridiculous too. They never should have marketed Shepard with a face at all. There's no "iconic" Warden in DA. It's stupid.

I just try to remember that we've got a lot of teen boys on these forums and teenage boys, by their very nature, are insecure.

(note: That is not meant to be an attack on the older men who can't get over having a "chick on their box".  I'm sure you're just as insecure, but in an older and more aged sort of way. :innocent:)

Yeah, it's pretty amazing how scared and upset some people seem at this idea. I mean, seriously guys, FemShep isn't going to boot down the door of your house with a pair of boltcutters and a nasty grin on her face (+28 Renegade!). Your imaginary girlfriends will not leave you because you bought a game with a girl on the box. What's the problem lol?
