Wouldn't take much work to spiff up the old default femShep headmorph. If that's all that's holding them back, then they must be running a skeleton crew.

Perhaps including femshep on the cover, more girls would think "I thought this was a male game, perhaps not?" lol.

You laugh at this, but on one of the forums I frequent, a number of women had not even bothered looking into DA2 because there was only a Male Hawk advertised and only later picked up the game after an article on the site mentioned they could play female characters.  Obviously these were not people closely following the game ... but these are female gamers who are looking at the boxes on the shelf at the local store and making purchase decisions based upon the art.  If the commonly held belief that only a small fraction of would be purchasers actually bother looking up a game online first is true, then quite a few sales are being decided by the box art's ability to attract consumers ... and the pure male image is turning a percentage of those potential sales away.

I admit to being one of these kinds of female gamers. I've been playing video games for a long time but after a while I got bored with playing a male protaganist. I ended up doing the same with Mass Effect. I'd seen it on the shelves whenever I went to the game store but never picked it up. After I found out from my brother that you can customize your character and that playing a female was an option, I went and picked up the game and ended up loving it.

With DA, my boyfriend was interested in getting it. When I saw the trailers for it my reaction was: Meh, looks cool but probably won't play it. I just recently seen that playing a female was possible in DA (never kept up with the game myself) and am now looking into picking up the game to play.

I have no issues with male protaganists in video games. I've played the Castlevania series, Mario, Halo, and several other games where the main character is a male, but having the option to play a female is a nice change of pace.

If you get Dragon Age, get the Ultimate Ed. It comes with all the DLC, etc.

But, some people are having a hassle getting said DLC to work. Just a heads up.

Once you get it running, it's like pure digital happiness though.

Female Shepherd is no more "feminist" than having Samas Aran (who is played by same actor) being a woman. It is simply recognition that there is such a thing as women in the army. Failing that it is a choice for people who play the game.
There is no preaching for women’s rights at all here. This version of the future makes gender somewhat irrelevant. Or at the very least, it is never really brought up since the characters in the Mass Effect universe have far greater things to worry about than petty gender discrimination.
If you feel that Shepherd should be male, by all means make a male Shepherd. Though there is no pro women preaching here, however, it is somewhat liberating for a woman to see a female character inhabiting a male role convincingly with the same gusto and still kicking ass without "in spite of's" and without being a sex object.

Who cares? Honestly it's just advertising and if this is really one of the main issues regarding ME they must be doing something right.

I don't know about everyone else, but I can't afford to be indiscriminate with my game purchases.  I'm not wealthy enough for it.  Now, I grew up playing games where the protagonist was male (as is the norm even in modern games).  I can deal with it and it isn't like I'm perturbed, or worse, just because I have to play a male character.

But that's why being able to play as a female character is such a welcome treat -- it's rare, and it's especially rare to find a female protagonist that isn't a sexed up caricature of feminity; a stereotypical man's "idealized" vision of women that has little bearing on reality, which makes it more difficult for me to identify with such "female" protagonists than I would male, in such a case.

I identify best with female characters, just as men identify more easily with male characters (hence why the vast majority of video game protagonists are male, as males have dominated the industry longest).  And because it's rare, I go out of my way to support those developers who make games that include female protagonists.  I want to reward companies that have identifed us female gamers and went out of their way to design such an option...especially when it is an option that was given equal weight and consideration.

On the other hand, again...the money I have to spare for games is limited, and the pool of games featuring male protagonists only is vast.  I am very discriminate when it comes time to purchase games, and when a male is slapped on the cover, well, it blends in with every other game out there.  So it's more apt to get lost in the void of rejected titles.  Having a female option, and knowing that a game has it, does help a particular title to stand out from the crowd of "generic male protagonist in x-genre" games.

I am also one of the handful of people who research their purchases, so I do have a step up on many who buy on impulse.  Still, you have to advertise the option to play as female, otherwise I may well not know about it and, well, again it gets lost in the slew of "games with potential but that don't quite stand out from the pack."

So...yeah.  More female representation, please.  Not asking that a female protagonist overtake a male protagonist, just asking that she exist and be made known. B)

I've played a couple of on-line games with Ventrilo (voice system), and I always get a kick out of hearing guys' voices associated with female avatars.  It's also a bit of a blast to hear their reaction when they hear my voice ("She's really a girl!").

When I ask these guys why they play female avatars, they always say, "I'd rather be looking for hours at a girl's ass than a guy's."  If that idea holds true for an on-line game, wouldn't the same hold true for a solo-game?  Don't a lot of guys play femshep for that reason?

So why is there so much annoyance by some guys that Shep might have a female version on a collector's edition box?  Are they worried that the guy behind the counter at Gamestop might judge them for buying a game with a female in heavy body armor on the cover?

Nice to see this happen.
I'm one of the folks who wanted to see this yet I do agree with Jebel on one thing.

Purely based on how you've marketed the game in the past you're stuck with keeping that box art steady. If you look at any other game series you have the hero(ine) stamped right on front.
This lead character is the eye catcher - rather then the game's title. If you saw James Croft instead of the usual Croft on a Tomb Raider game you'd have people scratch their head too and wonder if it's still the game you were looking for.
Worse yet, suppose you make the box art feature both male and female Shepards some customers are going to assume, based on past experience with box art featuring squadmates and even enemies, that Shepard is getting a Gears of War 3 style female sidekick to help liberate the galaxy.

I really like what Bioware's planning to do and perhaps they could provide different CE boxes with different box art.
Blizzard did this with the very first release of World of Warcraft where you could pick up an Orc box, Undead box or a Nightelf box, etc.
I do believe it was even the regular editions that had this differing box art.

So I have a pop quiz here for the folks responsible for the femShep trailer and box art:

- Are you tweaking the looks for her on both trailer and box art?
- If so, will we be getting these tweaked looks in-game for the default female Shepard?
- If that's the case, will you update Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 1 with these new looks for the default female Shepard?
- Bioware released statistics regarding ME2 that I feel can't answer my question; I would like to specifically know - out of all the players that finished at least one runthrough, how many completed at least one runthrough as a female Shepard?

hwf,

It's the CE metal box cover. It will only be seen by people who have already purchased the game and removed the N7 sleeve.

FemShep is only on the Collector's Edition of ME3 on the back cover of the tin box.  On store shelves there will be no Shepard at all on the CE box, only a cut out N7 logo.  There will be no confusion.  She is not replacing Sheploo on the CE and she will not share the cover of the retail version.  There probably are some people who would like that to happen, but it won't.  As for the trailer, IF it is shown at a public venue (which I doubt) I'm quite sure they will make it clear to all that femshep is the female option for Shepard.

- Are you tweaking the looks for her on both trailer and box art? If I had to guess, I'd say yes
- If so, will we be getting these tweaked looks in-game for the default female Shepard? I asked Mr. Silverman that very question via Twitter, but he has yet to respond.  I've not seen it mentioned anywhere else either.

Sorry, but I wouldn't even hazard a guess to your other questions.  I hope this helps.

If it's not a big deal, as some of you state, then why do it?

So much hypocrisy...but I guess that is the norm in these forums.

Actually, it IS a big deal, just not something that should ruin anyone's enjoyment of the game.

It is a big deal because it will be the first appearance of FemShep in any advertising medium.  It is a big deal because it is showing recognition and respect for the female players and those who prefer the story be told with a female lead.  (and for that matter, it is a big deal because it isn't treating the female voice actor like a second class character)  It is a big deal because female characters rarely get box space unless they are being oversexualized to sell a product.

It is a big deal, because it is a step forward.

So, since it is such a big deal to the people who want it, why can't the rest just be happy for them?

Mostly because the people who praise femshep also bag on maleshep.

That doesn't have to do with BioWare as a company. FemShep doesn't deserve less recognition because "supposedly" most of her fans on this fourm dislike MaleShep, ya know?

I was just responding to a point in post, not on the merits of promontion

fshep was a thrown in secondary character so female players could have a girl shep just like the girl in fable she too was added in because people complained from the 1st fable they wanted to be a girl. So being that she is an add in to begin with I don't get the obsession over she should be the new face brand person. Mshep is the primary character and so is doing just fine as the brand face.

Trolling much?  FemShep was not an add on, she was an equally viable character option - otherwise they would not have hired a voice actor to do all her lines with the same intensity and quality, (actually I like her VA better) as the Male.  But, I'm not even going to get into this, because you would have to know all that if you've been paying attention, or read any of this thread, so I return to my initial impression and label you, Troll.

Wow. You're right. I mean it's not like Bioware ever had the option of playing a female lead in one of their games before. It was just tossed in at the last second. Your wisdom is astounding. Thanks for enlightening me. I'll go back to my kitchen now.

Personally I have never understood that reasoning for picking a female avatar.in games. I mean its just a character your playing in the game. Are some people really paying that much attention to their characters rear while they are playing said  game?

Really? She's the secondary main character, wasn't advertised at all till recently, and was the bi option from the start, they throw msheps moves and walk onto her in 2, she is called sir sometimes, all checks are there. They put all the same quality into her so the players can have the illusion she was never meant to be 2nd place she was made to be as believable in most aspects as mshep was. I think you think I mean she should go away which isn't true but she is what she is not the brand face of the brand not the 1st character BW made when they first conceived of the game.

And she's not alone either like I said the girl in fable is the same she was conceived second and added in on fable 2 the story was made with a male protagonist first then she was added.

Unfortunately I can't think of a single game I've played where the opposite occurs when the woman was conceived first the story written for her, the animations and situations done for her, and the the male was added in as an secondary main character choice.

If I had to choose between dealing with a reaper invasion or Mshep vs femshep war, I'll choose the reaper invasion everytime. My goodness it's just a stupid image on the BACK of CE. What are you afraid of? Femshep going to jump out from the cover and question your masculinity because you bought a game with a chick on the cover?
