You ignorant people complaining about Femshep on the cover. If you look at the whole set it shows Maleshep encompassing the front of the Metal Case with Femshep on the back.

There is no irony.
Would you pay $80 for the Collector's Edition of a game you've never heard of, or only heard mention of in passing before you saw it sitting on a store shelf next to the standard version which costs $20 less? Even if you do, do you believe that tendency translates to many other consumers? I doubt it, and I think market research would back that up; were I wrong, we'd see publishers shipping vast quantities of CEs of their games to display alongside the standard editions. At most now what you will see is one shelf of CEs rowed individually, and then many many times more standard copies stacked layers deep on multiple shelves.
And that's assuming there will even be any Collector's Edition available for the shelves at all. I don't know if ME2 sold through all they had in every single market, but I know for the greater Portland metro region there were none to be had if you didn't pre-order. So the "confused casual" scenario may be moot in the first place, since they'd have to know what the game is in order to pre-order a copy of the supposedly confusing Collector's Edition.
Honestly, the "confused casual" argument is pretty poor reasoning for keeping femShep off the cover of ME3's collector edition along with her male counterpart.

Err, that's not what I asked. Unless I misunderstood you, it seems like you've seen pictures of the CE. I am unaware of such pictures existing, and would like to have a look. Where did you see them? Or did I read you wrong?DarthSliver wrote...

Ah, that's the same image as the one on Bioware's site, which Amazon is using too.DarthSliver wrote...

I was wondering if a sneak peak had leaked out. Mr. Silverman seemed to hint at Bioware doing something to Shepard's appearance, and I'm naturally curious.

Lots.
I suppose we could complain that femShep in the trailer is too sexy or not sexy enough. In fact I am anticipating just this response.C9316 wrote...

A vote for FemShep is a vote for diversity and roleplaying.
Gamers should know that the ME series provides options. It's not a lame Gears of War knockoff with some big tough bald guy like all the other big tough bald guys out there. That needs to be known--and yeah, we know it, but does everyone? Somehow, I doubt the person who's never heard of ME who sees Sheploo is going to go, "Oh, wow, I bet that game's a really unique experience!" Quite frankly, it wasn't him on the cover that drew me. It was the aliens, the girl in the space suit, and the planets that interested me. And it being a Bioware game, of course--but not everyone has played a Bioware game before. Not everyone who would love an RPG like this has played one.
Part of ME's charm is that it gives you more options. You can say, "forget the Dutch model dude, my Shepard is going to be a black man." You can say, "Male heroes are everywhere. This is what century? I'll take a heroine instead." The game is a different experience based on whether you're male or female. I view Shepard in subtly different ways based on the performances of Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer. And frankly, I love that.
They should market that, period. Maybe expanding on on the whole "Sheploo is the face of ME" thing, rather than clinging to him alone like he's some sort of religion that must never be violated by ever implying that you can play the game without him, will draw the attention of people who like the idea of variety and cinematics rather than just the same exact shooter formula we've all played dozens of times before. Maybe it will distinguish and deepen the game in the minds of newcomers rather than make them scratch their heads like hairless apes.
I really don't think the average gamer is too stupid to understand the concept that there's a default but you can make your own. Somehow, that doesn't strike me as the sort of thing you need to go to college for.
Long live Jane Shepard, and Ugly Shepard for that matter. They make the ME universe a better place, and they make the game so much more fun for the individual.

Some of you people are really dense. The ME3 CE will almost be identical the the ME2 one except FemShep will replace the image of the Collector. Sheploo on one side, FemShep on the other. N7 on the slip cover. No ones removing anyone's precious Sheploo, GET IT!!

I assure you, no guy is playing as a female because they enjoy staring at her pixels for 50+ hours. That is what internet porn is for. I never quite understood the need for guys to make up such contrived statements. As if they are less manly if they don't sexualize their reasoning. Maybe they really don't like Mark Meer's voice, or his default face and suck at the character creator. Or maybe they simply like the idea of a woman kicking ass. But it certainly isn't for the view. And if it is they have some serious issues.
