There are quite a few people saying they want Tali to take her helmet off at some point so they can see what she looks like, which got me thinking.
Quarians are supposed to be rather social, aren't they, so why do they all have tinted visors that don't let people see their faces? You'd think that a transparent one would be helpful in communicating with others (especially people would aren't quarian). So is there some reason for the tinted visors? Do they just do that when they are in contact with aliens, and have visors that they can alter the tint of? Is it for the mystery? Is it just because the Bioware devs didn't want to design a concept for an entire race when Tali was the only quarian we knew in ME1?
I'm just wondering, I don't think I've ever seen a real reason for the tinted visors.

Some people think it's so light can't get through as well. I imagine they'd get a bad sunburn after all these years inside suits.

When Tali takes her helmet off during the romance on Mass Effect 2 I'm pretty sure there was some circuitry on the opposite facial part which I'm going to guess and just assume its some breathing or air filter apparatus. Maybe thats why? No reason why they couldn't just take the tint away unless it has something to do with light.

Ah, the light. I hadn't considered that.
I had a sneaking suspicion it was just because quarians like sticking their tongues out at people without them knowing.

Would have been a great if she stuck her tounge out at the admiralty board during the loyality mission.

One of the big reasons for opaque visors is because of the cramped quarters of the fleet, they have little to no actual privacy. The suits serve as a sort of psychological barrier from those around them.

@Bearcut, ah, another good reason. I think it mentioned that in the books too.
@Stounga, maybe she did and we just didn't see it!

Maybe Quarians see a different spectrum of light than humans do. One where the visors are transparent. They may be opaque (well, translucent) to "visible" light, but transparent to, say, UV light.

^Then people would complain about necro'ing an old topic.
I always thought there was gas in there. ME2 proves that a quarian can breathe oxygen though, so I guess not.
Light/privacy seems most likely. Might just be decorative, thought.

Makes sense for it to be decorative. After all a lot of their suit is meant to be decorative not just life support. Her visor went with here ceremonial garbs that went on the suit. Same with the other Quarians, the visor usually matched the suit well.
