I preferred the elevators. Think about it. In ME1, the loading was integrated into the game through the elevator sequences, which gave you something to look at and listen to in the meantime. In ME2, you got the standard boring loading screens. Worse in my opinion. I'll take the elevators anyday.

Don't want them because I don't need them. They weren't put into ME1 for the banter. They were put in to hide how long it took to load the next area on the XBox. So even on my fast up-to-date gaming PC, I am limited by the XBox's loading times? No thanks. The only elevators they were able to speed up for the PC version of ME1 were the ones that did not feature banter or news broadcasts or anything like that. If I want news, I'll hit a news terminal. Banter? Another vote for the DAO banter system please. Then I can decide to stop and listen or just keep walking.
I'm not opposed to there being an elevator scene of some kind if it's part of the story. If it's NOT an elevator I have to travel up and down ten times on the Citadel or something. ME2 had scenes in the landing craft that were a nice touch. More of that, please.
Spot on.

Some of what ME1 was able to do was down to NOT having a lot of data to load. Whenever you landed on a planet, there was nothing but a featureless textured terrain-map, a sky-box, and maybe some weather effects to load. You never got dropped anywhere NEAR a structure so that they could trickle-load them as you struggled over the ridiculously steep terrain to get there.
Near the end of the game, when Joker drops you practically right on TOP of your objective, my first thought was, "Dude... if you can do that why did you always drop me 10 klicks from the objective in the Mako on all those other planets we explored?!"
And Joker said, "Because of the XBox, man! Plus it was just funny watching you roll that thing. Where did you learn to drive?"

i dont and i played the game maybe 50 times. minor details, atleast to my ME experience.
i like anything that adds to my immersion, and elevators were certainly one of those things. hidden loading screens should be a signature of ME3. its never gonig to be perfectly cinematic as long as im staring at spinning relays as loading screens.
ME1 featured shepard riding an elevator, while ME2 featured an image of an elevator going down. personally id rather have ME1s.

But I played first on PC - so never had the absurd loading times that were reported - what I don't get though, is that there was Fast travel available at numerous places around the Citadel? Why couldn't people who didn't like Elevators use those and save the Elevators for people who actually enjoyed the open world feel they provided?

Which, ironically, was in ME1 as well. Just more rarely.
Anyways, on-topic, I preferred elevators as well. And I think they could yet be improved for ME3 if Bioware wanted to; instead of going up and down a featureless tube while your squadmates chatter away (or don't) they could add some manner of eye candy. Perhaps the elevator is translucent, overlooking some citywide vista. Or it's some sort of mechanical lift for moving equipment and machinery without mass effect cores over rough terrain, so you rise up out of forest, over the treeline, and see the expanse of some uncolonized alien wilderness spreading out below/behind/beside you as the rest of the gameplay field above is loading.

I prefer elevators to loading screens for immersion reasons. Even while in the elevator you can move the camera around, and listen to news reports and squadmate banter.
Loading screens? Not so immersive, nor are they as easy to look at as DA2 loading screens were. I don't know why. Also that annoying noise the loading screen makes. (Vrrrrroooooooooooo) You might get repeat news reports in the elevator, but at least its not that same tone playing every hour or so.

I just liked the elevators because of the banter. Remove that and they can might as well remove the elevators.
Other than that, I don't really care how I'm getting from point A to point B.
with ya on that. besides some of the elevator music was great. snappy little diddies.

I wish I could rape and murder anyone who says immersion or immersive.

Also for some reason staring at the party stand around for a minute, having a conversation without Shepard or listening to a news report is worse than staring at an animated loading screen. I feel like they should be actively doing something, moving around, but all they are doing is standing. How the crap is that better than a loading screen with pop up text tips?
I'd much rather the characters interact with one another in other ways, not standing around in an elevator. If you never use the elevators, ME1 has about the same level party banter as ME2.

Its a shame they only used it that ONE time in ME2 with Garrus/Tali but hopefully we get more of that in 3.
I heard about that. How do you get that conversation? Which elevator is it?

Ultimately, both loading screens failed because they took too long.
