I do not like the elevator idea myself. A loading screen means I can roll out - raid the fridge or harass the cat.

I suppose it all boils down to personal choice.. How I really get from A to B matters not to me.

You go through the effort to get up and walk all the way over to the fridge?

Between the two, I'd opt for the elevators, but if they implemented cutscene transition sequences to minimize/hide the load times, that would trump the elevators and would get my vote. If I need a bathroom break or a drink reup, I hit start or the old fallback of the xbox button if I need to do something, but am in the middle of a cutscene.

Admittedly, some of the elevators were long, but I'm a guy that makes his Shepard walk places occasionally, lol, so meh. If a crappy NBA game can have you shoot around while the game loads, why must Mass Effect, an infinitely better game, make us settle for 8(estimate) loading screens?

Generally, seamless loading >loading screens.

Elevators are literally the worst possible (and cheapest) way to do seamless loading, however, and if the loading times and lack of banter from ME1 are an indicator of what we should expect in general...

...just keep them away.

My only problem with elevators and loading screens is that they make the transition longer than they need to be. Even if my computer can load the next area in 2 seconds, I have to wait 10 seconds for the scene to play through.

I'm not against a more natural transition between areas - I think it enhances the illusion of openness - but they need to get a bit more creative.

Elevators with banter, for sure. They just need to make the conversations and whatnot last most of the ride.

I woulnd't mind the elevators so much if they weren't EVERYWHERE and most of them don't have party banter or news.
Just played Novaria again.
Or as I like to call it elevator planet. Nothing happens in any of those elevators in that whole mission you can't tell me thats better than loading.

Loading screen should show Shepard perched on the toilet reading the latest edition of Fornax.

Elevators, because I love the dialogue the party members have with each other while en route.

Nothing happens in a loading screen, so hell yeah elevators are better.

Alright, here is my suggestion (not sure how viable that is though):
When there are elevators, that is fine, just don't make them dynamic (i.e. the ride ends when the game is finished loading, not like ME1 where my PC would load everything in about a second but the elevator would still go for a minute).
Most of the loading scenes happen during transport (i.e. shuttle rides, car rides, etc) in ME2. If that is the case, have an in engine rendered preset little video play that shows the shuttle land or whatever while loading.
The thing I really want back from ME1 is the decontamination cycle when leaving entering the Normandy via airlock. That was much better than the loading screen.
As I said, I ma not sure how feasible this is but it would be the best option IMO.

elevator > loading screens
Loading screens breaks the immersion, at least in the elevator you can amuse yourself with party banters.

Yes I can.

You do realize the loading screens in Mass Effect 2 are longer then need be? If the load screens at least weren't on like a timer and just loaded the game and let me continue playing then fine but no it has to finish some timer or animation.

How the hell is that better than a conversation, a news broadcast or just cheesey elevator music?

I know the answer. But I'll never tell.

An argument for elevators

30 Rock is hilarious

Edit: especially Baldwin

To topic - with any luck we won't have to worry too much about load times or how to best conceal them, if the confirmed features thread holds true.

The load screen that is the fastest is the best choice, I don't care if its a black screen with little white writing saying "loading" I just want to get on with playing the game as quick as possible.
