To me it doesn't matters much, waiting is waiting. They are the same, really. The one that requires less from the game is the most practical.

One of the better ideas I have seen for loading screens came from the early Dragon Ball Z games. They had simple mini-games you could play while you waited for your next upcoming level/fight/etc. Of course these did get boring and pointless. Answering your question, I prefer elevators with banter but if there was no banter then I will go off and grab a drink while the loading screen is up.

I liked the elevators for banter and It kept you immersed in the world.

Loading screen of an elevator ride?

In general though, we've made a lot of of improvements to the way we structure our loads... so they're actually pretty quick now. There have even been some improvements for the 'resume' stuff after you die, so that's quite a bit faster as well.

Just played Novaria again.
Or as I like to call it elevator planet. Nothing happens in any of those elevators in that whole mission you can't tell me thats better than loading.

Nothing happens in a loading screen, so hell yeah elevators are better.

Nothing is better than nothing?

Can we hope for more Airlock cutscenes?

Those were really wonderful for immersing ones self in the fiction of maintaining sterility on ships :)

Yes I can.

You do realize the loading screens in Mass Effect 2 are longer then need be? If the load screens at least weren't on like a timer and just loaded the game and let me continue playing then fine but no it has to finish some timer or animation.

How the hell is that better than a conversation, a news broadcast or just cheesey elevator music?

Don't ignore what I said.
I was talking about the elevators on Novaria specifically.
These elevators that have no banter or no news or music.
If the game had loading screens the elevators wouldn't be around that mission half as much.
But you know because you have it on the citadel and ONLY the citadel all the rest of the game needs boring elevators.

Doesn't really affect a PC gamer, the loads were already lightning fast. Are you saying that the loads are in general faster, or have been implemented in a more smooth, continuous way?

Ah, I'm not too sure about the HUB areas... but I would assume they're probably along the same lines as the planet landings... so more of a narrative outro sequence on the ship connected to a short connective sequence of you landing/docking.

I preferred the elevators.  Think about it.  In ME1, the loading was integrated into the game through the elevator sequences, which gave you something to look at and listen to in the meantime.  In ME2, you got the standard boring loading screens.  Worse in my opinion.  I'll take the elevators anyday.

My sentiments exactly.

I hated the loading screens in ME2, and I limited the loading screens as much as possible in ME1.  (taking the long route to a store instead of fast travel and a loading screen).  I know not everyone's like me, and personally, elevators or not, I'm going to love ME3.

As we're stating preferences here, I don't think it's right for people to say "screw immersion" or "screw console gamers!"  This thread should be about your preference and not about shooting down other people's preferences/interpretations.

loading screens are just a part of video gaming, unless u can get ME3 on a cartridge, it's gonna be there.

We did have load screens of elevator rides in ME2.  I believe on Illium, the dantius towers as well as Miranda's loyalty quest.  I did not enjoy them at all
:P

So no.. to load screens of elevator rides.

I think we had that on Miranda loyalty and Thane recruitment.

Confirmation that nude multiplayer elevator rides are in, followed by 3 hour load screens of a barrel-rolling Normandy?

Heard it here first.

No they were not. I've modded the load screens to show the ME1 load screen instead, with the Mass Relay, and it takes like 3 seconds now unlike the normal ME2 load screens.

Mass Effect 2 load screen comparison It takes as much as 20 seconds using the default loading screen took the modded load screens 2 - 3 seconds.

Its not seamless and its nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt at hiding loading.
Its not even immersion because you can't move in the elevators.  Nothing breaks immersion for me more than locking me in one spot while I wait. At least with loading screens I don't have to pretend I'm in control.

I hate loading screens with a passion and much prefer the flow that the elevators brought.

Having said that though, the loading screens wouldn't have been so bad if most of them weren't so abstract.

Yes they were depicting what was happening but with the schematics they did it in such a boring, generic way that most of the time they didn't seem connected to anything.

Not to mention the almost teleporting like way that Shep seemed to use to get about. Only the Normandy seemed to have any sense of flow.

Most of the time it was.

Stood at map
*loading screen*
Stood outside the Normandy

It was just so jarring and disjointed.

ME1 at least gave the illusion of flow.

Stood at map
Walk in to airlock
*Airlock cycles*
Walk out of airlock
Stood outside the Normandy

A bit more thought and the loading screens could have been great, but as they were, they were definately a bit lacking. ( IMO )
