First playing, Human Noble. Dog joined party in Castle Cousland very early on. Battled rats and was present for the betrayal when Arl Howe's men attack in the night.

I abandoned that game due to it being annoyingly difficult with a dual wield rogue on Nightmare level.

I started again, subsequent playings on Hard. Same class and buid. Now the dog will not join party.

Ser Gilmore does. Self + Dog + Gilmore fights the rats, but dog isn't in party. After, it then moves from pantry to kitchen, still not in party. Finally, also not in party, it's present just before the battle with Arl Howe's men in the Castle. When the battle starts, you awaken in the night, Dog isn't there.

Toolset has been set to a new module, so I haven't fiddled with the SP game in any manner. I have tried a few times, picking conversation topics likely to make dog happy - but in all honesty it worked the first time so I clearly know how to get the dog. I just have no dog...

But you have the toolset installed? And have you used it? If so that might be the problem, I had the same problem when I started my human noble. Never made one before so at first I thought it was just a bug in the game, I remade the character and started again, but the same thing happened. Finally I remembered the post about how the toolset might break your game and I thought that that was the problem. I re-installed and everything was fine after that hope it helps

One more question: Are all the different versions of DA the same? My first playing was on a French language console version. My subsequent playings have been on the US-english PC version. Would that make a difference? Did they maybe change the effect of storyline conversations to reflect cultural differences? Or is dog AUTOMATICALLY added?

If it does not then I think this needs to be moved to technical support. I have deleted:
o) userdocs/bioware/dragon age
o) program files (x86)/dragon age
o) programdata/dragon age
and reinstalled game only, no toolset, and still no dog.
