I haven't played DA2 in about 6 weeks.  Tonight, went and downloaded patch 1.03, which installed fine.  When I ran the game, I had no option to continue my old games, and the Load Game is grayed out.  I only have the "New Game" option.

When I went to look for my old saves (I'm looking under C:\\Users\\Scott\\Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age 2\\), I do not find a "Characters"directory as I think I should, and no saves.  What happened to them?  Is there another location I should be looking in (I don't think so)?  I have not gone in and deleted them.  Searching for missing saves, I've tried a couple of things including running as administrator and being sure hidden files are visible.

This is Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 Bit PC.

TIA.

Thanks, but in fact, I had done a google search on this with multiple terms before posting, and although there are a few cases of this reported for all bioware games, I can find no resolution or helpful idea suggested other times other than "maybe you deleted them." Some hints are someone reporting that if you have too many saves, the game will delete them;  or Steam will delete them (but I'm not running through Steam);  one suggestion was a change in permissions.  All of those seem odd, it's hard to imagine Bioware having routines to delete save files.  My main account with admin rights has not changed.

Although in fact now, when I look back under my documents\\bioware\\dragon age | mass effect | mass effect 2 | dragon age 2  folders, none of the directories have a save or character folder, only a few settings.

Are you using retail versions of the games? if Steam maybe its different?

That is too odd none of your games have saves/character files.

For a test -run DA2, make a new character, save as soon as you can and quit. Can you find that character name and saves?

Yes, retail versions of the game, not actually through Steam, so that didn't make sense, you are right.

Got in, created a new character and saved after the first battle, the folder and character and save show up. The old stuff - still not there. Grr.

It sounds like something or someone deleted your saves. I have never heard of any bioware game deleting saves if too many. I do know in ME2 I think it was it was very limited on pc to like 50 saves per character, but it would overwrite the oldest save when making another in that case.

Hope you get it worked out. If you play any of those games again and they get deleted that would be very bad.

Very odd. I have managed to find old save games, but only because I have automated backups running. On a backup from 3/30/11, I found all my old saves (as of that date) for DA, DA2, ME, ME2. The connections from game to game are such that it would be a huge bummer to lose the choices from the earlier games! So I'm glad I found them.

On the most recent backup, none of the saves are there. (And they really are gone from my main drive C:, even file utility software did not find them, although that's quite possible if they'd been deleted and the sectors overwritten.) So then the question is, how did they vanish in between? Very, very odd, and kind of disturbing. Certainly wasn't done manually, and no one else has access to the computer.

[I also found it hard to believe that a Bioware game would delete old saves, although that was what some poster had put on a forum at some point.]

It almost sounds like something deleted your my documents folder. Too odd. At least you have old saves on backup. I have some as well because I plan on moving them to a new computer in the future.

This just happened to me. Played it once, left it alone for months, and decided to come back and make a different ending choice to take into DA3, but DA2 thought I'd never played the game before (configuration utility) and there wasn't a save to be found. Very annoying, I must say.

I would recommend both of you to save your savegames manually to a different location. I've got savefiles from DAO and DA2, invested roughly more than 120+ hrs into both games... no wait, DA2 currently at 107 hrs and DAO about 150... good lord ^^.

I do this for all my games, especially heavy content based like rpgs, I even save my ME files manually...
