Respec Varric. Invest in Rhyming Triplet and Bianca's Song. Does it allow you to get Well-Oiled and the Embellishment upgrade?

I want to figure out if this is cross-platform (intentional?) or exclusive to 360 (a bug/error), so I can update my build guides accordingly, if so.

i'm not exactly sure what you are saying, but if you're referring to getting upgrades with less prerequisite points than is stated then i think it is something to do with having his friendship- e.g. the friendship/rivalry bonus counts as an ability?

It worked for me on PC. I've also got full friendship with Varric, maybe it works like afk said.

Atleast on PC this works for all companions, e.g. Isabella can get Sea Legs with only Savvy, or Fenris can get Battle Tempo and Inner Reserver with upgraded Lyrium Ghost and Veneer of Calm. But it only works if you have either the Friendship or Rivalry bonus. So yes the bonus counts as an ability.

He is indeed correct. I actually noticed this on my second playthrough of the game when I was messing around with Merril's ability trees.

Weather or not this is a bug I do not know.
