I believe there's a different ending for anders, read through various posts and this is where it gets confusing.
to trigger where anders sides with templars do i need to romance anders and then get him to rivalry or just romance. or no romance and just rivalry.? thanks

Rivalmance him and side with the templars.

You don't need to romance him. Just have him be a rival, and side with the Templars, though you get slightly different dialogue depending on whether he is romanced or not.

However, for this to work you need a save from early in Act 3, before a particular quest. I can't remember precisely what quest it is, I think it is the quest called "Justice" where you help Anders get the ingredients from the sewers.
