Ok, so. First of all, I would like to apologize to everyone if i put this topic in a completely wrong part of the forums. This is actually my first post in any forum on the internet, and since I've been playing mostly RPG games for the last 16 years, it's kinda weird for me too.

So, here's the story behind my question.
I'm playing a female human mage, and I've been romancing Alistair since the beginning. And ofcourse I didn't wait for Alistair  to ask me first about the ''going to the tent'' romance option^_^, I actually read somewhere it's waaay better if you wait for him to ask you first:?. Damn me and my impatience:crying:. I've done the sidequest where he goes to meet his sister, although I haven't hardened him after. And I've been supporting Anora to be the sole ruler of Ferelden since that conversation with her in Arl Eamon's estate in Denerim. During the Landsmeet i let Alistair duel Loghain himself, and ofcourse he killed Loghain immediately after the duel. I again supported Anora to be the only ruler of Ferelden. Did not accept Morrigan's Dark Ritual, and i went into the final battle with Alistair in my party.

My question is:
Is there any way you can sacrifice yourself in my situation and not let Alistair die in the final battle?

I've been replaying the final battle 10 times, and no matter what dialogue options i choose, it always ends with him saying this is his first and last duty as a ''king'' (although, as I've written before, I  only and always have been supporting Anora to be the sole ruler of Ferelden), before picking up the sword, slaying the dragon and his death ofcourse.

Is there a glitch or something happening at my ending of the game, or is that just normal?:(

First off - welcome to the forums! Hope you enjoy yourself here.

On to your issue - it sounds like the dialogue bit is a bug, since you mentioned you supported Anora and did not put Alistair on the throne. A few people have had issues with the endings where decisions they made were not in line with the end blurbs (mostly dealing with Alistair's potential to be king).

Spoilers follow.

However, I have heard that if you do romance Alistair, decide not to go through with Morrigan's ritual, and have Alistair in your party during the final battle, he will sacrifice himself no matter what you do, because of his love for you.

I think the only way to sacrifice yourself in that situation is not to take him into the final battle (not picking him to be part of your team during the gates discussion with your team-mates). If you have a save from that particular part of the game, I'd recommend reloading and having Alistair stay behind if you don't want him to sacrifice himself.

Thanks for the warm welcome. :)

I've been thinking of leaving Alistair at the gate, but I read somewhere that if you don't bring him along for the final battle, he acts at the end like your character and Alistair were never together, and there are no heartbreaking scenes. I'm not sadistic, I just want to see a different ending, where your character sacrifices herself, and also the response Alistair makes for that ending.

I think I'm going to load a save just before Alistair goes to see his sister, and harden him a bit. I'm really curious if that will open any options in which I can actually sacrifice myself at the end battle.

You are most welcome ;)

I haven't attempted the Alistair romance myself, so I don't know whether leaving him at the gates changes the ending if you romance him. I know he got angry at me as a male character for leaving him back at the gates, but by the end he was fine.

Anyway, I hope you get the ending for your character you want. Let me know if leaving him at the gates does remove the heartbreaking scenes at the end though - one of these days I will get to romancing him ;)

Well he does erect a statue to you, and says some sad things while you are "lying in state" ..ie: your character lying on a dais of some kind dead. Its all very sad and moving. I did both endings, the deal with Morrigan the first time, and the one where Allistair refuses to bed her for the second. His decision not to sleep with her, I think..influences the ending where your main dies killing the archdemon...not positive though.

I think I got the ending i always wanted :innocent:. I load a save right after the first fight in Denerim, just before you choose who's staying at the gate and who's coming with you. Then, I chose Alistair to lead the defense of the gate, and the goodbye speech was heartbreaking:wub:. Finally, I got to the end battle with the Archdemon and slew him. At the end cutscene, Queen Anora gave a nice speech, although I could not see Alistair anywhere in the crowd , and ofcourse, he did not give that mushy, heartbreaking scene I really wanted to see and hear above all else. But hey, you can't have everything.

HUGE SPOILER AHEAD

The ending said:
Alistair felt the loss of his love keenly. Although he returned to the Grey Wardens for a time, he was heard to say it simply was not the same anymore.Much to Queen Anora's relief, he resigned the order and left Ferelden for good.
He traveled to Duncan's birthplace, and there placed a small monument to the man's memory.Where he went afterwards is unknown.

Thank you guys for everything:D. I did not get the ending I really wanted. Because i was expecting that heartbreaking speech of his. But also, I could not expect Bioware to put every possible ending in the game itself. All in all, I'm happy how this whole thing turned out:), and of course, am eagerly expecting the sequel.

The heartbreaking scene where Alistair delivers his eulogy to you can only be got if you put Alistair on the throne and make him king. Hope that helps.

I have a similar question, tho I am a city elf ;) Can yo still prevent him from becoming king if you don't harden him, still support Anora before the Landsmeet, do teh Morrigan thing (poor Al, lol), and execute Loghann yourself? Or does he have to be hardened for all of this to work?

My city elf did go this route with one minor detail -- Alistair was unhardened, she supported Anora from the start, during the Landsmeet let Alistair execute Loghain and in the end went for Morrigan's ritual. Both Alistair and her were alive and kicking at the end, ready for more adventuring and whatnot.

On to your issue - it sounds like the dialogue bit is a bug, since you mentioned you supported Anora and did not put Alistair on the throne.

I assume that, by this, you mean the bit where he says it is his final duty as king?  If so, I got the same dialogue from him, even though I put Anora on the throne.  I think it happens if you keep telling Alistair he'd be a good kind.  I was not romancing him, but I was maxing my influence with him as a Male PC.  All of the options to tell him not to take the throne seemed to be insulting, so I didn't want to use them.  I just kept telling him to do what he wanted, but that I thought he'd be great if he took it.

I also go about the same, "last act as a king". Male character. So thats seems to be standard.

I Mr A as king endings the best I must say.

Nah its just a bug no matter what you tell him. I have that and even funnier things all the time. No matter what I do and how big bish I am my game always seems to end in them all loving me to pieces. I am not going to patch this game, ever.
