I honestly can't stand this term. Why does the fact someone is a girl even matter when it comes to playing video games?

Racecar drivers are predominantly male. So why don't you call female racecar drivers "racer girls"? Honestly, it makes no sense and it's just ridiculous. I don't see how the fact you're a girl should even matter.

What bothers me most about this term though is that 99% of the time, I've seen it used by females, not males. These females I've seen use this term act like it's some kind of novelty title and as if they should be treated special for holding it.

It's just really annoying to me. A gamer is a gamer. What's in your pants shouldn't matter.

To remind people female gamers do indeed exist, I think.

I don't care for the term myself, though.

Burn that virtual bra!

It's kind of a cutesy term, so it can be somewhat rediculous. But so are pretty much all terms used by pop culture.

I was soooooo thinking about that when I was writing my post. I was like, "this is going to make me sound like the hugest bra burner ever..." haha.

Meh. I just don't care anymore.

I do correct people sometimes when they mention me being a 'he' but as I said, I just don't bother anymore.

A better term needs to be thought of or even better, we're all just "gamers." Well, some of us are players but that's a different discussion. :D

Regarding the gender confusion that happens on this board, well, I go with it. Makes discussions more lively.

Nooo I'm talking about real life. When people in real life are like "oh I'm a gamer girl" or "oh she's a gamer girl" it just really grinds my gears.

I have issues with definitions in general.

I consider that I play video games to be far less important (personality-wise) than my obsession with so-called "losers" in history.

From what I've seen and who I've spoken to there seems to be a bit of a divide over the "gamer girl" label. Some take great pride in the title and behave as though it makes them better than their male counter-parts. Some refuse to adopt the girl part and defend the term gamer.

Personally I just don't use it. I find labels to be inherently coercive. As for why girl needs to be imposed on it... I'd guess it's a differentiation thing.

I generally use the term "weirdo" instead.

No, I really don't care too much about such trivial matters.

Hmm I haven't met any girls who use the term gamer to be something they aren't. I have met pleanty of guys who claim to be excellent gamers then lose to me in Unreal Tournament (which is saying something because my aim is atrocious). I have had people express surprise when talking games with a co-worker and they look a little horrified that I could be into video games.

Although I do know some girls who would pretend to be into games just to appear more attractive to guys .

It would be nice if everyone was themself but it is the internet we're talking about anonimity is everywhere.

I do not loathe it, but it is not a term I would ever apply to myself. Writing in strict generalities, I typically see two types of women who adopt this label: those who use it as a form of self empowerment, or those relying on their gender to attain special status in a community. To me, a player is a player, an opponent is an opponent, and no one should ever be underestimated. On that path lies an unforeseen ass kicking.

Besides, considering how skewed the male to female ratio is in certain game communities, I see no reason to add to that segregation by labeling myself based on gender. For example, the fighting game community makes a big deal out of the better female players not because they play well, but the fact they play well *and* are female. 'Tis ridiculous.

I don't like the term "girl" to be applied to any female past puberty. Guys hate being called "boys" so why on earth do gals stand to be called "girl?"

"It's not what you call me, but what I answer to."

Can we address why everyone seems to go full retard whenever a female is in the game? They do 1 of two things. Number 1 throw insults such as "Get back in the kitchen!" "You must be fat!" or the classic, "Make me a sandwich!". Number 2 they all hit on her. Either way no one is playing the ****ing game, and I get bent over and, well you see where I'm going with this. Every once in awhile you'll have a semi coherent team that just plays but most of the time it goes to hell. It doesn't happen much in BF, but I haven't run into that many females, so maybe they just don't have a high female fanbase.

And yes, I hate the term.

This is why I avoid having a female avatar and wearing a headset at all costs. If people are going to see my avatar, I usually make it a male to avoid harassment. I get bothered a lot less that way. And wearing a headset proves useless because like you said, they're either going to hit on you or mock you.

I just hate how people make such a big deal out of it...men and women.
