This is why I avoid having a female avatar and wearing a headset at all costs. If people are going to see my avatar, I usually make it a male to avoid harassment. I get bothered a lot less that way. And wearing a headset proves useless because like you said, they're either going to hit on you or mock you.

I just hate how people make such a big deal out of it...men and women.

I'm male, and somewhat ironically, like to do the exact opposite. Besides the fact that I just prefer female characters in games, as evidenced by my current avi, I just like to portray the avatar that I have/character I play as female in order to see what reaction other guys get. I find it quite hilarious when guys, who first think I am female, realize that I am male, quickly go quiet.

WHAT?!? I have been misled! :P

I've never actually heard someone referred to as "gamer girl". I'm a chick, and I'm a gamer, but I refer to myself as simply a gamer. It's clear to anyone who I'm speaking to IRL that I'm a chick, so why state the obvious?

Oh, that's another reason why it annoys me. It's obvious that you're a female that plays video games, so why reaffirm the fact you're a female? More importantly, why do other people reaffirm the fact you're a female?

It's highly irritating when I hear girls in real life or on Facebook/YouTube say, "Yeah. I'm a gamer girl."

They have been put on this earth for us to laugh at, so, shall we? :D

I find it silly and to a point degrading. Its only a marketing tool, and a political one as well. I really dislike the term "gamer" as well. Its funny how engrained this social crap is with most people. Even just off of apperance. Sad really.

The term "gamer" irritates me as well, but at least it makes sense. "Gamer girl" is just annoying beyond belief and completely unnecessary.

I always found grrl the worst variation. To be fair I dislike all intentional misspellings. Moar, nao, ect.

The thing that bothers me about the term most is that the people who use the term to refer to themselves tend to be shameless attention wh*res.

I self describe as a gamer and not a gamer girl.

My friend who describes as a "gamer girl" does not actually play the kinds of games that you think of when you think "gamer". She's much more...casual than I am. Describing as a "gamer girl" though gets a lot of guys to perk up around her. Me describing myself as a gamer, sans the girl descriptor? I get a lot of scoffing and laughing ("you can't be that hardcore! go make me a sandwich.") until I play them in something.

It doesn't matter to me. I'm a gamer, or gamer girl, or something. Personally it's not like anyone who games with me cares who or what I am. They just enjoy the game like I do.

Is "gamerette" or "she-gamer" better?

I don't really care being called a gamerchic, what I do mind is all those douches online that think that since Im a girl Im JUST a girl and that means its time to insult/hit on me.

If both the words are true then there are certainly worse things to be called.

I must say that after playing WoW so long you do notice how guys act differently when there's a female around, it's funny to watch for a while but eventually it becomes really sad to see, practically destroyed the last guild I was in, too. You'd think that your only interactions with someone being limited to text chat and vent would make their gender academic anyway, but apparently not..

Just a question:

Do you get mad at the term actress as opposed to actor?
Do you get mad at the term stewardess as opposed to steward?
Hero and Heroine?
Comedian and Comedienne?
Tailor and Seamstress? (My favorite. Exact same job, yet two completely different words)

All same things except for gender.

Considering throughout history there have been a masculine and feminine term for alot of words, I think its just a bastardized version of what has been standard in many languages.

It could possibly be gamer-girl flowed better. Its perfectly valid for you to want to drop the girl part and just be called a gamer, but you'd have to apply it to everything else. That's cool if that is what you want to do.

Now the connotation on the other hand, is something all together different. People will use any word and make it to be a negative, positive, sign of pride, or whatever.

If it grinds your gears, I understand. But its only a negative if you perceive it so. It truly sounds like a personal problem to me, as I don't believe its a term that has collectively used to demean and oppress a set of people. I could be wrong, as I'm not a girl, and haven't walked in one's shoes.

I've never heard the term gamer-girl used to relegate a female as a second-tier type player. I'm playing WoW right now, and the main tank is a gamer-girl. She's amazing.

I honestly can't stand this term. Why does the fact someone is a girl even matter when it comes to playing video games?

Racecar drivers are predominantly male. So why don't you call female racecar drivers "racer girls"? Honestly, it makes no sense and it's just ridiculous. I don't see how the fact you're a girl should even matter.

What bothers me most about this term though is that 99% of the time, I've seen it used by females, not males. These females I've seen use this term act like it's some kind of novelty title and as if they should be treated special for holding it.

It's just really annoying to me. A gamer is a gamer. What's in your pants shouldn't matter.

<_<

Well, racing is a professional "sport".

Gaming, not so much. It's open to whoever has the means and the wherewithal to participate. So you're going to get a lot of riff-raff.

Also, don't you know a lot of gamers are enraptured by the female? The female is like a half-mythical beast. She's basically a unicorn.

Simply shows how some things change, This used to be somewhat of a term of endearment in the early days of PnP.

Gals that were willing to participate in the realms oft seen as nerdom were virtually embraced, as many of us were simply to shy to actually do so. Think of Penny going to the comic book shop in Big Bang Theory, when all business comes to a grinding halt....

From this Ancient One; my apologies, as there was never ill intent.

No. It's just a descriptor. If you don't like it, don't use it, but don't waste your time raging or trying to control other people's expressions.
