I really truly hope that those pics you keep posting are just for trolling and not your IRL pics. For starters, why the hell would you post your IRL pics on a forum like this? Second...do you really think there's something to envy in those pics? Your "muscles" hardly even show. All I see is some skinny guy trying to be tough.

So just...stop?

'gamer girl' in itself...but it might annoy me if used too frequently.
So yeah, I'm a girl, or better yet, a woman, and I play games. So what?
If guys make a problem out of this, then they should just grow up and
start accepting the goddamn fact. Simple as that. I myself am always
gender-conscious, so to speak. With this, I mean that, when talking to a
person, I always ask whether they are male or female, if other sources
do not directly indicate their gender (like, when there is nothing
mentioned in their profile or biography or some other obvious clues), so
you'll never see me scream 'dudes' and stuff all the time during a
multiplayer, like Milana has pointed out.

Btw, Turnip, snap out
of it. You're BusomJack, the Great King of Trolls. Seems that some
trolls are even harder to remove than the most stubborn kinds of weed in
the garden.

This pretty much. Whole heartedly agree. If I have to speak in English to someone in an MMO, I refer to him/her according to the game character's gender and then correct myself if need be.

Yeah?  How many "skinny guys" do you know who can do this?!

My fiancé and majority of his friends no doubt (to be specific my fiancé went up to 308lbs before he tore his shoulder and most of his friends are more regular trainees as he is). Not to mention his father and older brother who have several championships which I'm not going to name though, in order to protect their privacy. I'm smart like that. You seem to think you're so special for working out. You are not.

I'm just going to ignore your trolling from now on.

I use the term Gamer Girl the same way I say Police woman. Online, it doesn't really make a difference, but IRL, it's more likely I'd try to hook up with her. However, it's hard to say for sure...I've only ever met one real, good looking gamer girl, and she turned out to be a gigantic egomaniac.

But yeah, I don't really get women. Men...we can sit around calling each other **** and making fun of each other for hours without getting offended. I don't really get how "gamer girl" is more offensive than telling your buddy how he might as well become a eunuch since he's never gonna get laid again...but that's just me.

Taking a stab here, but I think the difference might be in who is using the term. In your eunuch example, you have a bunch of friends talking and joking each other (and hopefully everyone is fine with that line of joking). I think where many women might be bothered by the term "gamer girl" is when they are called that by other gamers, particularly those who are men. It forces a gender distinction upon a word ("gamer") that really has nothing to do with gender. You enjoy games, you get excited by and about them, you play for hours on end and can chat about them for hours on end - you're a gamer. It shouldn't matter if you are male or female. Tagging on "girl" seems to demean the "gamer" part.

I've said earlier in this thread that I don't loathe the term, and I like when women can embrace and own it and such, but I can understand why it does bother so many. The gaming community should be an open playing field - you come to the arena/table/console with skills that should be independent of how you happen to look, or what department you happen to shop in.

Yeah, but I doubt your friends are NSCA certified like me.  I do more than just work out, I make a living out of it!

BTW, I can also run a sub 19 5K and have completed a half marathon in 1:25.  Bet your steroid junkie fiance with upper cross syndrome couldn't do that!

It goes without mentioning that I'm also a wrestler, and a freestyle martial artist and swordsman.  Your friends would be face down in the dirt if they challenged me begging for mercy.

I'm not denying that some things in WoW are difficult and require skill, I just find the whole thing boring. It feels more like a job than a game to me. This is also coming from a guy who plays turn based strategy games and argues over proper Soviet armored forces doctrine. Plus in my mind WoW killed off any chance of a Warcraft IV.

It seems WOW's popularity peaked with Wrath of the Lich King. It doesn't seem that many people really care so much anymore and if The Old Republic turns out to be really good then that will be another nail in WOW's coffin.

WOW will never fully die but there is a good chance of it becoming like Everquest is today, a game that is supported only by a few hardcore servers.

Several years after that Blizzard may decide to revisit the Warcraft franchise with a Warcraft IV hoping that it will renew interest in their defunct MMORPG.

Just think.  Blizzard could release an expansion pack that will tie into the events of Warcraft IV and then players who buy Warcraft IV will get a free month subscription to WOW.

I think Warcraft IV will happen one day.  Probably early next decade.

Just didn't seem fair to say "MMORPGs don't count" because you don't like WoW when I got the impression from your post that you didn't really get past the leveling quests. It's perfectly fine to not like it, I'm not saying you have to, but you can't just say it's not a proper game.

I've personally have yet to meet a "gamer girl" in real life beyond some who play WoW or (insert other MMORPG here).

Now I may be biased but MMORPGs don't count. It's like playing a day at work. The King orders you to collect five boar tusks...

Why doesn't this get taxed so that I can support my family?

Well in ReconTeam's defense.  99 percent of the people who play it don't even do any of the stuff you described in your copy and pasted article about the Lich King strategy.

WOW is just a fantasy version of second life really.  The people who "play" it don't really play it usually, rather they sit around cities saying "LEEEROOOYYY JENNNKIINNNS" thinking they're funny in trade chat, or they'll roll a blood elf or night elf female so they can cyber pretending they have a real girlfriend.

So I guess it's debatable whether or not a game can still qualify as a game when almost nobody uses it for it's inteded purpose.  It would be like calling Sonic Adventure a platformer if everyone who played it only played it for the fishing levels with Big the Cat.  Maybe WOW is a strategic, challenging game on paper but de-facto it's just a gathering for people to escape from the failure which is their real lives.

Funnily enough, the only person in the world who refers to me as a 'gamer' (at all) is my partner.

Anyway, I can see why this might be an issue that many remain divided upon. Over the years, women have often fought for the creation and usage of female-equivalent terms traditionally used to describe jobs that only males participated in (e.g. actor/actress). In more recent times however, the trend seems to have moved in the opposite direction - many arguing that the job is identical, thus the title should be as well.

Hobbies (such as gaming) however, rarely enter into such debates.

So, is it right to distinguish a male and a female who participate in acting? Perhaps simply because most of us were brought up using the words 'actor' and 'actress', we'd have a hard time imagining a world where only the word 'actor' was used. But whichever side of the fence you sit on with respect to this, what about other jobs? Should we have accountants and accountresses? Teachers and teachresses (or something that sounds better).

Taking that one step back even further, in modern society (at least in my country), where a female is absolutely treated no differently to a male in virtually all aspects of life, one might question the need to identify a female differently in general language. Is it fair to use 'she', 'hers', etc.?

Is it really useful, to know the gender of a human that we are referring to in general language? If so, why is it inappropriate to know the gender of a human that we are referring to with respect to a job title?

I think being a girl gamer must suck since girls being all emotional and hyper-sensitive as they are have too many sacred cows.
If you're a girl you can't have a game with boobs, sexist humor, jokes that make fun of women, and all that other fun stuff which pretty much eliminates 50 percent or more of the console library of every modern console except maybe the Wii which women only play for Wii Sports.

I doubt it, Blizzard is probably going to start phasing out WoW support once their "Titan" mmo is released.  They may continue bug fixes and balance changes for a year after it's release, but I don't that there will be any more content.  After that, they'll be free to make another warcraft 3 style rts.

My suggestion would be to get over yourself.

If another woman wants to call herself a gamer girl or grrl or Her Holy Supremeness the Empress of Spain, it's none of your damn business.

I think what she's trying to say is that women who use the term tend to be egomaniacs. I went on a date with a "gamer girl" who the whole time was talking about how much she has to offer and how she could meet another guy in a day because she's a gamer girl and soooo much cooler than other girls. They use the term "gamer girl" to say they're superiour to not only other gamers, but other girls as well.

Dunno what you're getting so pissy about, Maria. She's just saying that women should be treated no differently from men in the realm of gaming. Do you really think you should get special treatment just because you have boobies?

It hasn't been my experience that women who identify themselves as gamer girls are attempting to project themselves as superior or cooler, or what not. I think what you may have experienced with your date (just taking a guess, since I wasn't there) was a bit of residual of her being disenfranchised, and so perhaps she felt the need to gloat, or boast, or generally puff herself up a bit. It's a common behavior when you feel like you have to compensate for something, or you feel like you have to prove yourself. If it's been a person's experience to constantly have to fight to have an equal playing field (in games, at work, etc), his/her behavior may become somewhat arrogant as a defensive mechanism.

Again...just guessing.

I took the OP's issue to be not with the superior attitude so much as with the term's use as a way to demean the (female) gamer. But that's my take.

I happen to have boobs and I happen to game. I personally don't want any special treatment. But by the same token, I don't want to be dismissed because of my anatomy.

haha. You let her get away with that? You should have pointed to a random guy wherever you guys were and said go meet that guy and get his number. Then you would have been able to enjoy it as she went from overconfident to unconfident in the blink of an eye.
