Now don't take this the wrong way, it's not intended to be a hate thread, it's simply something that I started to think about recently.

The one thing that disappointed me most in ME2 that the only other soldier we are allocated (Zaeed Massani) is taking the place of a more competant soldier (Ashley Williams).
In fact, I was so disappointed by his abilities compared to the good Gunnery Sergeant, that I retired him from service and assigned the position to Garrus or Legion instead, depending on who was available at the current time.

And my initial impression is that James Vega may be repeating this mistake.

I haven't heard much about a Krogan squadmate, which may indicate that we're not getting one.
This could imply that James Vega is intended to be the "goto Soldier" instead of Grunt.

Which I would find disappointing.
My favorite team combo was Ashley and Wrex.
I was hoping to pair her with Grunt in ME3.

But if they follow the ME2 trend, I'll only get two soldiers, one I want (Ashley or Grunt) and the other who is replacing the one I do want (Massani or Vega, replacing Ashley or Grunt).

Unfortunately, if it comes to that, Vega is going to warm the bench and Garrus will be stepping up in his place instead.

If BioWare are going to repeat the soldier trend, then so am I.......

Or it could indicate there's 9 ****ing months left before the game comes out.

Can't you people wait before posting pointless speculation and complaints?

I'd just love to know what makes James Vega special, and why they are introducing a new character in the last of the series... Don't we have enough NPC's to pick from with all the squad mates from the first two games?

I know, I know, some of them could have died at the end of ME2, but whatever. I'm sure they could have at least picked one of the story oriented NPC's from one of the other two installments. That or I've somehow missed just who the heck James Vega is over the last two games and I didn't realize it.

Meh, maybe it's just me.

I've encountered plenty of people that don't like Zaeed for his personality, but to attacking him based on his build is a new one for me.  He's the only squadmate with the ability to provide Squad Disruptor Ammo.  On top of that, he has a respectable weapons loadout.  His grenade is a little lackluster on higher difficulties, but performs admirably near the beginning of the game.  And even his Concussive Shot can be useful for staggers and CC.

Well, basically, it's just one ability he lacks that caused me to dismiss him:
a shielding power.

In ME1. Ashley could use Immunity, which would increase her damage resistance.
Grunt could use Fortification, which made his armor stronger.
Legion could use Geth Shielding. well, that's self explanatory.

Garrus has concussive shot, so does Grunt, so neither of those are selling points.
And nearly half the squadmates can use assault rifles, so that's not a selling point either.

As for Squad Disruptor ammo, as a Soldier who can personally provide that ability if I wanted to, why would a squadmate who can do it be useful?

As regards story, James Vega is the "dialogue, this is going on and that is going on guy".
As I'm interpreting the article, he knows nothing about the situation and by explaining it all to him, a new player learns the backstory.
For those of us who played ME1 and ME2, he's going to be nothing more then an instant recap machine.

I'm not sure what skills he will bring to the team, but I'm pretty sure Grunt can do his job a heck of a lot better.
And besides, I want to pair Ashley with Grunt, just to see how they perform together, both in combat and personal relationships (I'm imagining putting these two together will be full of witty remarks and funny banter).
I don't imagine Ashley will have as much to say to Vega (a complete stranger), heck, even Garrus would be better for the "banter" factor.

Mainly, there are two things that concern me at the moment:

1) The limited size of the "permanent" squad means that Ashley and James are likely to be the only Soldiers in it.
2) BioWare loaded you up with techs and biotics in ME2, but you only got two soldiers.
And if you didn't add the Zaeed DLC, then one was all you got.
I didn't, so Grunt was the only soldier squadmate I had!

Which is why I'm concerned about this.

Well, I extremely rare have more than tank in squad (because my Shepards' most popular class in Vanguard), and when I need in person for shooting, it's easily Zaeed. Spectacular damage boost, grenade is nice for controlling enemies (Hae-Kedar robotic plant, anyone?), sometimes Disruptor ammo helps.
So... what am I talking about? Ah! I strongly doubt, though, that there won't be extra one tank in addition to Vega and Ashley - because sometimes VS is Kaidan. Having only one tank avalilable for squad is very, very sad (Alistair, Justice and Aveline, I'm looking at you) and I doubt it will be done in ME3

Garrus and the Krogan squadmate is how I always roll my teams. There better be the traditional meatshield krogan squadmate in ME3 or I will be disappoint.

We don't really know much about James Vega yet though, it's a little bit annoying (understandable though I suppose...he could be Kaiden 3.0, 2.0 being Jacob) that people are kind of putting him in the trash straight away

EDIT: I reckon James Vega is the traditional "meatshield" kind of squad mate, he looks bloody big and tough (close enough to a Krogan), and he's in Shepards team so that means he must be pretty elite and badass

I pretty much favor a Krogan as well.

In ME1, I had Wrex.
In ME2, I had Grunt.

I'll be very sad if that grand tradition does not continue for ME3.

The way I see it, Grunt cannot have possibly finished learning all he needed from his Battlemaster (Shepherd) in one year, so it would be odd for him to pack up and leave just like that.

And honestly, what would scare you more, a human soldier or a Krogan?

I. AM. KROOOOOGAAAAAAAAN!

But seriously. If Vega's a krogan-lite replacement, there better be a vent to put him in.

Well Grunt COULD be dead, so even if he's a permanent squaddie (and I believe he is going to be) then you need a "tank" on the team and Vega seems to be positioned to fulfill that role.

There is no tank like a Krogan tank.

When he has the health of a Krogan, can ram enemies as a special melee attack and has a shielding power, then tell me how good he is.

When it comes to Krogan, accept no substitutes.....
