I find that I pause my game a lot to deploy squad mate powers, as moving to use keys 5,6,7, or 8 takes my fingers too far away from w,s,a, and d.
Has anyone ever come up with a solution to this problem? Any way to map powers 5,6,7,8 to other keys, or to buttons on a mouse that has extra buttons?

I used to map those keys on my old mouse, but since it broke, I just switched to keyboard keys. I've maped Z(5), X(6),C(7) and TAB(8 where I store my "Unit skill") and the previous gun to the scroll button.

Like Aynien, I map those to my mouse - I only have Forward & Back - so I map 6 & 7 to those buttons, and 8 maps to Z. I like to hotkey Shepards most used powers to the mouse and Z and leave 1-4 for squadmate powers.

There are lots of ways to rearrange keys. If you have a mouse with a couple extra buttons - use them; another easy way to get more easily accessible keys is to change WASD into ESDF, it frees QAZ to map 678 (though you need to re-map 1 also).
Test a couple variants and then stick to one to get used to it.
