What I mean by this is I believe that each and every former companion will appear in some capacity during a major mission whether as a temp team mate or a major constituent of the story. I believe however those that you completed a romance with in the previous games will actually join as a permanent part of your crew.

Why do I think this?
  • Looking at the structure if the previous Mass Effect games, you will hop from quest hub to quest hub (planet to planet) completing missions. You will spend a limited time on each planet lets say a few hours, this doesnt give you enough time to develop your relationship with your LI if they were a temp team mate.
  • Bioware have said they want to put more focus "on smaller squads with deeper relationships" which will make some relationships more developed than others.

Confirmed returning squadmates: Liara, Ashley/Kaidan, Garrus, Tali

I sense a pattern here.

I've got high hopes, but then again my only two LI's are Kaidan and Garrus.
Still working on those other playthroughs.

Liara is my Shepard's lover. It has stated that in ME3 she will be a squad mate.

i have 3 save files prepared to save. 2 of them are love interests with liara, continued from ME1. One of them i have Tali as an LI, and let Liara know "we" wouldn't work.

wow, i didnt even know he was an LI in ME2, Then again i don't play as femshep. I certainly hope i can have tali back in my squad, she is such a unique character. Liara is hot but bland, tali has an awesome personality.

So basically the SR2 is going to be renamed the 'Loveboat' because if ALL of the LIs were permanent squadmates we'd have 8 LIs that we already know of and I won't be surprised if James and <insert new female human squadmate> will be LI as well, making it 10 which means less squadmates than ME2 but more than ME.

So the 'smaller squad but deeper relationships' is easily answered because they are all potential LIs and thus it isn't really proper deeper relationships because it's only for LI scenarios.

That'd SUCK as much as I like the fact we have potential LIs, one of the things people complained about was how non-LIs didn't have as much convo time with Shepard and when I mean non-LIs I mean ones that weren't even LI for opposite sex Shepard.

@Sir Ulrich; I can't speak for everyone, but my actual hope is that your ME2 LI, if not part of the original ME1 squad, is able to come on board, not all actual ME2 LIs joining up. If you're single/chose not to romance anyone/are able to dismiss that second LI, then a space opens up for a different ME2 squaddie.

Remember, a potential six teammates doesn't necessarily mean an actual six teammates. Garrus and Tali can die in ME2, leaving more wiggle room.

yes but what if your LI isnt on your squad?  they wouldn't be lying, if what you quote is to be true.  There are so many LI possibilty, its just kind of hard to fanthom how they could throw in an entire games worth of dialog for all the LIs.  hell its quite a feat to put Ashley or Kaiden varible in the game as it is.

I also want to know, that if your LI isn't going to be on your squad, that they are still supporting you in some other capacity with the war against the Reapers. Do you honestly believe as Shepard's LI it would be far better for them to hang out with shepard instead of doing what they were going to do to help shepard if they weren't the LI?

that is my theory as well. LI is a permanent SM and if not then they will be temps.
