I'm not even going to talk about defauluts... I got quite used to all games having them wrong those days.
The thing I'm actualy going to mention in this (my very own thread about controlls, I do realise there already were many of those) is that... well... who the hell made the decision to use the same key for running, taking cover and interactions? I mean... what is this? I don't even!

I'm replaying Mass Effect 2 on PC right now and noticed this right away (also, remembered how I noticed it right away when I was playing for the first time) how badly this annoys me and how bad idea it is. Ever since games where you could run and activate things were created... those were well... tow diffrent things. Even in DOOM you used SHIFT for running and SPACE for humping the walls in search for secret areas. This is just wrong.

I want to give some advice to whoever will be / is responsible for desinging controlls for PC (of course I'm naively going to assume that someone will even bother working on this instead of randomly assigning keys from all over the keayboard to random buttons from a x360pad / DualShock) - first, finish the whole Mass Effect 1 game, then imidietly after you finish, play Mass Effect 2 for 10 minutes, think about how coufused you are at this exact moment, and then go play Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Multiplayer for two days straight so you can see how PC controlls should look.

A shooter with gimped controlls is a bad shooter. BioWare does not make bad games.

Pretty sure they're separating the cover and sprint buttons for ME3. Not sure about the use key though.

... seriously? Even Duke Nukem Forever had that right... and being behind that pice of poop is a serious insult.

It is possible to edit the coalesced.ini to change it to whatever you like.
Personally, I didnt really mind it. About the only time it does cause minor irritation, is Garrus's recruitment, when you have to seal the shutters, and thats once every 3 or 4 Insanity playthroughs.

You've got my blessings OP;

The number of available buttons isn't an issue for pc games (we've got plenty) - I hated the moments when I wanted to sprint but accidentially hit (invisible) cover forcing Shep to hide behind a crate instead of sprinting past it :(

We need MORE buttons Bioware! MORE you hear! At least give us the option to have one button to interact, one to sprint and one to get into cover - weapon hotkeys would be nice also; more power hotkeys wouldn't hurt too. Just saying ;)

I agree more keybindings/customization of keybinds. It is one of the big perks for PC gaming.

yeah. It gets annoying when your behind cover and trying to grab a medkit and you end up standing up and getting shredded.

It only annoyed me in Legion's loyalty mission because I activated a turret when I wanted to take cover. The good thing about this system is that they could use both A and E (the previous activate key) for squad commands which is a huge improvement over four arrow keys to command both squadmates at the same time.

I've been using autohotkey to combine keys like this for ages. In ME2 it was nice that they did it for me.

Context sensitive keys FTW!

I think I read somewhere ME3 will have a separate button for sprint/cover. This was the only control issue I had with ME2 and it seems it's getting addressed so... Yay

So true, I hardly ever used the 'move squad to point X' buttons in ME1 because the buttons were on the other side of my keyboard and before I had pressed them, the battle would be over. ME2 improved A LOT on this by using the Q, E and C buttons for squad commands.

I can deal with the one action button for everything (I would rather have more, though).

What I absolutely cannot abide is having no keyboard shortcuts to the Squad/Journal/Codex. I know consoles don't have a U key, a J key, or an O key. But I do!

Actually i found the spacebar for those actions was fine, good even once you got used to it. Context sensitive keys are great when the work, and it worked for ME2.

What i hated was lack of hotkeys for journal etc and lack of mousewheel support and mouse doubleclicking etc.

Maybe you liked ME2's approach, but there are many others who disagree.

Point being, PC-players are not handicapped with controllers and the like - they have a full-size keyboard available and a mouse (which potentially has a couple extra buttons also). I don't think it's a lot of work to allow PC-players to customize their keys and assign a couple extra should they feel like it.

One of the things that always bothers me when I play console-ports is the complete lack of PC controls. Why doesn't scrolling work in ME2? Why can we only save 50 times per character? ETC - those small things could be adressed in a day (maybe less) but they make playing and navigating through the game much smoother and user-friendly.
