Maybe it has something to do with the fact that she is the official XOLancelot X wrote...
On my ship I've always considered either Ashley or Garrus to be XO/second in command. It really irked me how in ME2 Miranda acts like she's the official XO.

If I could choose I'd probably choose Liara, though not because of any particular favoritism. As nice as it sounds to be XO, I think Ash and Garrus would both hate a job that requires they spend long amounts of time sitting at a desk. Liara on the other hand loves desks, files, information, all that boring stuff. She'd type up those mission reports like nobody's business.

because you dont want an AI or VI to make commands while shepard is away.Thiev wrote...
If it's mainly administrative stuff, why not let AI handle the job?
Shadow Broker's assistant drone for the XO.
XO is a fancy way of saying second in command, the person who's in charge when shepard isnt on board.

Please BW, not Miranda....though would be great if we, the players, have a choice from a select few.

Shepard should be promoted to Captain in my view.
I agree.
I'd like to have the choice as to who the XO is, but that's probably a lot of extra lines of dialog to put into the game. If I had the choice, I'd choose Garrus, but in all likelihood, I'd say it's probably going to be Ashley. ...or Kaidan.

Garrus strikes me as a soldier through and through, but not an administrator.
The same goes for the VS. Or really just Ashley. Kaidan might not be bad. Maybe.

Anyway, I'd hate to find out that I'm not in charge anymore of the Normandy I stole fair and square from Cerberus. And I sure as hell don't want to end up as XO to the VS since they're Spectres and no doubt still more loyal to the Alliance.

I liked it, when she informed Jack about her role aboard the ship.
YUS, MIRANDA; SHOW HER WHO'S BAWS!

And seriously, Kaidan being a higher rank than Shepard is insulting, if he ever tries anything there should be an option to blast him out the air lock

Garrus is returning, and has shown himself to be an excellent leader, so why not him?
Garrus is too reckless and hates paperwork.

This would resolve the LI issue for those who romanced her.
Edit: Just to expand on the reason a bit but who better to fill Pressley's position? He was anti-alien at the start of ME1 and my Shep turned him around. Miranda was Cerberus but I got her to work with a team full of aliens and then got her to tell TIM where to go.

I think people seriously have no clue what an XO is. An XO and Second-in-Command are NOT the same thing. An XO deals with the paperwork and administrative duties, such as reports and individual dossiers, that the captain is too busy to bother with. When the captain is unavailable the XO is then assigned temporary command of the vessel, meaning they have to be knowledgable of the vessel, its crew, the mission, and keep a cool head. If the captain is killed the XO assumes permanent command until relieved by another captain.efrgfhnm wrote...

A second-in-command is somebody who is assigned on the field with the responsibility of taking over when the commander is rendered incapable of assuming command. They relinquish command upon returning to base or the completion of the mission.
The sad thing is that people won't even bother reading my post and will continue thinking that Executive Officer and 2nd in command are the same thing. <_<

This is news to me. In ME1, I always assumed that whenever you exited the Normandy, "XO Pressly has the deck" meant that he indeed was the second in command. Not to mention Commander Shepard himself.
After Eden Prime, Captain Anderson says "How's our XO holding up, doctor?"

Hoping it wouldn't ruin my friendship with Ash for the rest of the game, I'd probably pick Miranda. But, I doubt we'll have that kind of opportunity ... it is an alliance ship, with alliance crew, so Ash will likely be the only real option given.

The amount of times I've face-palmed at people wanting Garrus to be XO is ridiculous.
