Definitely not Miranda. Although i don't reject Garrus' popularity and loyalty, he is not a type being an XO... Or Ashley. Their place at my side on battlefield. If we are talking about XO, not second in command, then i choose Liara. I don't need her powers since I'm adept and "I'm curious abour your mind Shepard, meld with me. " attitude. Good riddance. My second in command choice is Ashley. Garrus seem to confused a lot in ME2, got into himself lots of trouble. What about Jacob ? LOL, i can't stop myself laughing when his body-building footage(in Shadow Broker files) comes up in my mind. Don't expect me to see him as an XO.

I agree. Any alien as an XO on an Alliance military vessel is far-fetched.

Making Garrus the XO would be akin to putting a London police officer with prior service in the British Army, as the executive officer aboard the USS Enterprise. Besides not being in the US Navy, he doesn't have the necessary skillset or experience for the job.

Likewise some of the humans would be ineligible for similar reasons. (civilian backgrounds for example)

Really the only potential candidates would be Alliance military personnel. Adams may be a good choice for that job.

An XO deals with the paperwork and administrative duties, such as reports and individual dossiers, that the captain is too busy to bother with. When the captain is unavailable the XO is then assigned temporary command of the vessel, meaning they have to be knowledgable of the vessel, its crew, the mission, and keep a cool head. If the captain is killed the XO assumes permanent command until relieved by another captain.

A second-in-command is somebody who is assigned on the field with the responsibility of taking over when the commander is rendered incapable of assuming command. They relinquish command upon returning to base or the completion of the mission.

The sad thing is that people won't even bother reading my post and will continue thinking that Executive Officer and 2nd in command are the same thing. <_<

"XO - Executive Officer, the second-in-command of an Alliance warship. The XO is responsible for administrative and personnel matters."

If the CO dies or is unable to command, the XO will assume command. That's how it works. That's what a second-in-command is. You're right they are usually tasked with more administrative duties then the CO, but that's just how that works. COs focus on the big picture things, the other Officers take care of the more minor details and duties.

In truth Miranda is pretty much your XO whether you like it or not in ME2. Although Cerberus is hardly military to begin with, so someone considering Garrus their second-in-command is hardly wrong. If Shepard dies who do you want to become the new CO? Why not Garrus? Essentially anyone you pick as second fire team leader could be considered XO material given that the SR2 has no official command structure.


Now in ME3 you may have point as we'll likely be working under the Alliance in some fashion. That likely means whoever is the Alliance Navigator will likely be XO (Pressly was probably a Staff Lieutenant). Or essentially the highest ranking crew member on board after Shepard and the ground crew.

Garrus while a good subordinate doesn't have any actual Alliance rank and therefore cannot "officially" be seen as an XO. However Garrus assuming command is hardly wrong given his experience. If Shepard wanted to make Garrus his unofficial second-in-command he/she probably could as Shepard's Normandy crew has always been loyal to them above all else.

ME2 it was Miranda. ME3 it is probably Kaidan/Ashley. (Nothing against any of them BTW)

Both were wrong cause Garrus should be XO. He's lead men before and has been with Shepard throughout the trilogy.

Garrus would make an excellent XO. Problem is that I would be taking him with me on most of the missions in ME3...

I would say that my second choice would be Jacob. He is level headed and likable (apart from with Tali and Thane, it appears.)

Also a good way for him to restore confidence in his leadership abilities. Even though it will be difficult for him at first.

If I had a choice I would choose Garrus. He already proved he can be a leader in the Suicide mission.

In my opinion General Shepard sounds pretty awesome. Of course, this is Navy so it'd be Admiral Shepard which is a little less cool but still sounds fine.

For my XO, if given the choice, it'd probably be Garrus when I'm not bringing him along.

Somehow, I don't see either Ash or Kaidan as Shepard's subordinates anymore.

Miranda would be my first choice if given.

What if shep is the XO? VS as captain? Would feel really strange but the Normandy is now an alliance ship once again and they might want the VS as captain. Doubt it but interesting to think about. If it was up to me though i'd pick Garrus, coz he is ma bro! VS third in command.
