People who hated the Mako either couldnt drive, or didnt spend 5 seconds looking at the terrain to figure out the easy path. The only planet with "impossible" terrain, was Eletania, when you wanted to use the Consorts trinket.
I agree with the squadmates comments on your driving abilities. It was disapointnig the only time they said anything was the first time you hit a pyjak or shifty looking cow. I could just picture Wrex saying "Stop! let me grab it. I want fresh meat tonight"

it honestly wasnt the mako, it was the tedious out of control jaggedness of every random planets surface that made it not fun.

on more controlled situations like therum and noveria and virmire where you use the mako, its actually fun. on random sidequest on random planet #7 it really stops being interesting or fun when you have to navigate accross insane terrian for a super minor thing that you barely care about.

im sorry, but im not going to side track my primary sidequest to drive halfway across the planets map accross super jagged unfun empty landscape to pick up a stupid asari writings. its just annoying.
the mako itself was fine though.

Okay, I'm really not going to get ME3.  I didn't play ME2 even though I downloaded it when you gave it away to me free.  (Sorry, just couldn't get into it, but ME was never "my" franchise from the get-go, so I'm sure you dinna care.)

Anyway, I came up with an idea that would actually make me want to play ME3.

1.  Bring back the Mako.  (Yes, I love the bouncy tank.  I'm aware that apparently everyone else and their dog hated this part of the game, but I loved it.)

Hell no, more people hate it than love it , thus the scrapping

2.  Really Big Hills.

uh no, this game will be about the war not boucning around on hills on some nonesenical sidequest

3.  Kaiden screaming like a little girl as I launch the Mako off really big hills at top speed and ride the jets down.  This part is *really* important.  I want companions to lose their lunch.  I want them to DREAD ever being inside of a vehicle with Shepard ever again, even if its top speed is 5 kph (because you totally know Shepard would figure out how to get 300 kph out of that thing).

yeah no mako, and these are professionals... they never screamed before why would they start now

4.  Landing nose-first on top of a Thresher Maw and pulping its head.  Yeah, baby!

the mako wouldn't do any damage.
5.  Jumping a Reaper.
err...why? and na

if you didn't even play the game you are no fan

Reading comprehension FAIL!!  Go to the back of the line!

I said I wasn't much of a fan.  ME was filler while I was waiting for Dragon Age to come out.  I kind of regarded the Mako as being like a sled.  Yeah, it can be tedious to trudge all the way to the top of the hill.  But it's fun going back down again at high speed, even if you do wind up wedged nose-down in a crater.  I think I even managed to cause it to spontaneously combust upon ground contact.  It was hilarious.

I don't care how professional people are, if they rode in a vehicle with my Shepard, they were going to climb out woozy, pale and drenched in sweat.  My Thresher-Maw-Defeating strategy was to drive rapidly backwards and forwards until it went back under ground, then do my best Dukes of Hazzard imitation until it came back up.  That thing was HILARIOUS.

I would also like a scene where you take Joker with you in the Mako, and just after he gets belted in to his seat in the back, Shepard turns around and says something like, "hey, Joker, you remember all those times you drove the Normandy DIRECTLY INTO A REAPER BEAM WEAPON and almost made me wet my jumpsuit?  Well, buddy, VENGEANCE IS MINE!!!"  And then peel out leaving enormous tire tracks and a huge cloud of smoke.

:D

The driving controls in ME was not up to standard compared to most other games that have driving. Simply put it this way, the driving controls in ME1 was not right.

Nothing wrong with the controls. Thats the standard excuse for someone who cant grasp the concept of driving.

@DaringMooseJaw: Spending a few seconds looknig at the terrain always showed you the easy route either around, or over the craggy hills. The average side mission would take me 10-15 minutes to completely explore the planet, and empty out the warehouse/mine or whatever the objective was.
Maybe its because I do a fair bit of off-road driving, so I tend to look at the route before mindlessly trying to do an impossible hill climb.

You could drive mako sideways at a big hill, usually I looked for hardest path not the easiest. Some of the missions took 20 - 30 mins when I went off mad with hillclimbing (and it´s fun to drive mako while drunk):).

Hah!  You know those planets where there'd be a sort-of path leading through the mountains so you'd work your way through a couple of geth outposts or similar?  Here's how those worked out for me:

1.  Land on the planet.
2.  Ooh, minerals.
3.  Drive directly at the minerals ignoring any and all intervening obstacles, sometimes landing the Mako directly on top of the minerals in the process and getting repeated messages about how you can't get out of the Mako when the Mako is vertical/upside-down/hanging from a tree/not in park/has a flat tire/whatever.
4.  Mako finally poops out Shepard and crew.  Get minerals.  Get back in Mako.
5.  Ooo, exclamation point!
6.  Drive directly at the exclamation point ignoring any and all etc. etc. etc.
7.  Land directly in the middle of a geth/mercenary/baaterian/whatever base.  Promptly get shot 40,000 times.  Drive straight off a cliff in a blind panic. Repair the Mako.
8.  THRESHERMAW!!!
9.  Laboriously work your way back up the cliff to the geth/mercenary/baaterian/whatever base.
10.  atatatatatatatatFOOMatatatatatattFOOMatataattat
11.  Drive over any survivors.

Yeah, I never saw those paths.

Exploration was only fun for about 10 minutes. 10 minutes is too long anyway. Every time I'm tempted to reinstall M1, I think of the Mako. Back to the shelf you go.

I might have played my game differenlty as I used to go for long range sneak attacks with Mako cannon. Sometimes, when mood struck me, driving over geth armature or colossus and trashing them around. When I was picking up minerals I was afraid of getting stuck with the rod that flags them. As a matter of fact I don´t even remember how I was doing mercenary bases it was lot of driving, shooting and trashing with Mako and always in different way in each play through :).

edit: no planet in ME2 has hazards, so in someway there is no sense of danger anymore when you go on foot on planets.
