This will probably end up a terribly written and forgettable minor feature. It makes for good public relations spiel to put on a show over minute changes to your product line. I expect these romances will be in the vein of "The Temple of Elemental Evil" or "Tales of the Sword Coast". Superficiality here we come. :P Bethesda's writers are passable at world building. Their books within the last two "Elder Scrolls" games were decent.

Dialogue is another matter. Often it is quite weak. Considering BioWare has been at this for years and their romances are still far from anything I would consider high quality writing, I have no positive expectations from Bethesda.

Sad I don't remember there actually being romances in either of these games. Which likely proves your point.

edit: Oh right, there was that Farmer's Daughter in TOEE. Just remembered.

"Tales of the Sword Coast" had a romance wherein a werewolf, conveniently always your character's sex and gender opposite, tries to flatter with a flower bouquet and flattery. Said character later sacrifices themselves to ensure your escape from the isle. It was a stereotypical doomed romance related in a tragically insipid manner.

"The Temple of Elemental Evil" was worse. There four romances. Two women and a male option for guys and a widowed farmer for gals. I could go into them all, but it would take too long. Suffice it to say they were all lame. I still remember how this one farmer's daughter NPC would keep referring to my character as her love. What? Really? After talking to you *twice?* XD

They were pretty good in Morrowind where it was still Keywords and the NPCs would just spout monologues but they haven't gotten the hang of natural conversations.

"I saw a mudcrab the other day...."

But the mudcrab conversation was my favourite ever!  My only regret is that I couldn't take part.

I facepalmed at this.

While Bethesda sometimes have good quests, and side quests; they arent spectacular when it comes to actual writing of dialogues and MQ storylines.
Evidence how week the dialogue of a LOT Of FO3 is and how weak the MQs for both FO3 and OB.

Id rather they put more energy into correcting this, preferrably by shooting the person who keeps suggesting these lame ass "rule of cool" ideas out of a cannon, than adding in romances that really dont suit the style of gameplay and type of RPG that bethesda creates.

Bethesda's sidequests are always amazing. MQ always leaves something to be desired, not sure why.

Im pretty sure they will add a few companions in the game, it went over well in FO3 and FONV, as well, you could have intercourse in FONV, so I could see Bethesda incorporating these aspects into the TES series.

Its Ironic that Bioware chose to downscale the Dragon age world with DA2, while Bethesda is atleast making the game as large as Oblivion, its sad to see how terrible DA2 is compared to the TW2, and pretty sure that Skyrim wont disappoint, I think it will be a contender for GOTY.

Bethesda hasn't confirmed NPC relationships (friendship/romance) so it's just a rumor at this point.

If you can read German

From Nexus

Auch romantische Beziehungen und Freundschaften sollen sich demnach in der Planung befinden

Which translates to

Even romantic relationships and friendships are therefore being planned.

I'm thinking, this is might be a good sign.

I personally think Bethesda has some of the best quest design in the business. If their writers can do that they can do a piddly little romance. Have some faith people.

"I saw a mudcrab the other day."

"Romantic date?"

"No, an ex. That filthy creature."

"Goodbye."

"Farewell."

--------

"I saw a mudcrab the other day."

"It may be hideous on the outside, but I hear it's meat is tasty."

"I know it's meat is tasty."

"Disgusting."

"Goodbye."

"So long."

-------

As for the Bethesda cannot into writing argument, they are servicable and depending on the quest or book, pretty good. But as a whole, their books range from okay to excellent and their dialog is pretty consistent in it's derp. It's quest design ranges from derp to amazing, but there's more "average" more than anything. Bethesda does not excel at writing, quest design and dialog. So? No company is perfect and we all know that different companies have different strengths. Tell me when Bioware or Obsidian can get a detailed, rich open world with almost unlimited gameplay possibilities while keeping their other elements then maybe we'll talk about a perfect company (New Vegas aside because it's uber buggy).

Bethesda has their strengths and writing is just not one of them.

So IMO, romances would be a complete waste of time. Besides, people could and have modded those in pretty easily.

He's a gigolo?

The only possible romance option I saw in any TES game was with a homosexual guard in Morrowind who you needed to get some belt from, as you put it on, he started flirting with you and started calling you sexy and strong. I GTFO of there because I just didn't trust the guy.

I can imagine romances in Skyrim will feel forced on and won't have the development over time as Origins' romances where your LI is actually adventuring with you. Morrowind and Oblivion's quests don't even feel memorable to me and the only decent quests in Oblivion are The Dark Brotherhood's quests and they aren't that memorable either. So I doubt Bethesda will do good in romances and they will probably be like Fable romances - bland and rubbish.

I actually think this is a great addition, even if it isn't well done, it's what lacked from previous Elder Scrolls game.

In Oblivion, every NPC has a name, a house, his own bed, a schedule, food for the week, a set of keys, books, letters, hammers, shovels, menstrual pads, give or take, yet they still come off lifeless. It's about time they added some actual interactions as opposed to that silly charm wheel which has no use except for getting a better greeting, better prices or that hidden quest-related conversation. Elder Scrolls games are all about immersion and do great at it but although the universe is captivating, the characters generally aren't.

Years of Oblivion mods have "blessed" the game with all sorts of creepy pornography but never a decent romance/friendship mod.

However the articles I've seen that mention that don't seem to have any official source so I hope it is true !

LOL, aah, Fable ! Hopefully, farting in front of them would make them hate you if I remember correctly. Which, on second thoughts, is quite realistic (unlike the dancing).

And sorry Dragon Age, Mass Effect's writing is above and beyond DA writing.

lol

You can laugh, but there is really no disputing it.

I guess its a matter of opinion, but the vast majority acknowledges the reality Mass Effect has better writing. Because it is a reality.

Hmm if they have companions not a big deal, or if its story driven I don't mind it. Or part of some side quest and not a "Hey I talked to you twice now get naked" or "Hey I bought alot of crap for you now get naked" or "You know what plays some crappy music and have same lame ass semiporn/hardcore porn." Which I think alot of games take romance to = sex. And then just use ****ty writing or things out of highschool with no real substance.

I mean there are tasteful ways to do a romance or make it somewhat "meaningful". Its nothing I care about but won't shoot down I just hope it doesn't go a ME/DA:O route or worse ends up like RDR where you see some dude just getting it on, while on a kitchen table, while not serving any point at all except to make some teenagers happy...in the pants.

Best romance in a game ever is Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, because the romance was integral to the plot rather than some tangential, superfluous fling.

I would say Prince of Persia 2008 with Elika. That game was awesome. The prince was really humorous as well.

ToEE was remarkably weak in terms of storytelling in general, although the turn-based combat was superb.  It was a real missed opportunity of a game.  The gay romance option was a brave choice, even though it was not unproblemtic - was ToEE possibly the first game to feature gay marriage?

Back to Bethesda, the Ahnassi romance in Morrowind was actually guite interesting, a real practical partnership.
