well depends on yer romance, if your talking about me3 and its for the LI of me1 characters its past romance but you have to re romance them. But i think if your loyal it will be more than Love, if you can be that

Sex---> romance---> love. In that order.

Except with Tali:

Love is simply hormones and neurotransmitters, so Shepard and his/her LI probably feel it for each other. It's not like love is anything special or unique, it's just a holdover from our evolutionary past. Total "monkey brain" stuff.

People can interpret a romance in their way. Personally, I think my Shepard's "romance" with Miranda is based on lust and sexual energy. I'm not much of a "love" person anyway.

They "love" each other the same way two characters in any Hollywood action flick love each other. It's Hollywood love.

As far as I see it, fondness and platonic love exists between good friends. If you added lust to that, you'd get romantic love, and all the relationship-y stuff that goes with it. I don't think the question of whether or not Shep feels romantic love for his/her LIs is one with a clear-cut answer really. It's a combination of events/friendship/sexual attraction. It could develop into romantic love, though that still doesn't mean it would last long.

But as for the relationship being able to go the distance... it's fiction. I can pretend that romantic relationships last if I want to. Image IPB

The others most probably do, but with these three in particular it's painfully obvious.

I think you should have listed Liara.

Thank you for the Bioshock II quote! Beautiful, poignant ending.

On-topic... I've not experienced the romances for many characters (in the off chance I'd want to play through again for them), so I've only seen Tali and Garrus's in ME2, but those two at least definitely ring of long-term respect, care, and the couples wanting to be there for the other to provide mutual happiness. Granted, this is also up to interpretation of the player, and that's mine.

For ME1 romances... they came across as love to me, although Liara's was of a very young sort, yet nonetheless sincere. And just because it's love doesn't mean it'll always be that way, if circumstances change. My female Shepard's encounter with Kaidan on Horizon left her with a bad taste in her mouth despite their previous loving relationship, that he wouldn't even bother to properly listen, and turned to someone who actually had been with her through thick and thin unconditionally: Garrus.
