Why have the Qunari suddenly got horns and why has the Elven race become Irish?

Two changes in DA2 I thought deserved a thread. I found it difficult to picture the Qunari with horns. I don't think horns would have sat to well on the noble, stoic Sten from DA Origins and to give the whole Elven race Irish accents nearly destroyed the mysticim of one of the major fantasy races for ever for me. Two steps in the wrong direction I think.

Irish accents are very mystical.

And Qunari had horns in Origins, too. Sten was a genetic aberration.

The Qunari having horns gives them a little more character. With Sten, Qunari really had no difference from humans other than a couple inches height-wise and somewhat pointy ears. With the horns, they actually look like a different race.

As for the elves, only the Dalish elves have Irish accents. To this, I believe, the development team aligned the Dalish with being Celtic, who we're very clan oriented, believed in the Old Gods when the Roman Empire began invading Brittania and fought tooth and nail, quite effectively, to hold on to their own culture. The Celts and the Dalish are quite similar, and I think the accent has something to do with that.

Doesn't anybody know the difference between an Irish accent and a Welsh accent? Most of the Dalish have Welsh accents. And the only reason Sten didn't have horns in Origins is because of helmets. You can't wear a normal helmet if you have giant horns.

Yup. Qunari did have horns in origins. Aren't those born without them, like Sten, special or something?
Tal Vashoth remove their horns or at least did in origins

I was under the impression that Sten Was is not of the same race as the Qunari we see in DA2. Seeing as the Qunari is actually just a religious group and not limited to race.

No, Sten is of kossith species, just like the qunari we see in DA2. He is a rare case of a kossith born without the horns, though.

Gaider said not all Qunari have horns, and I guess since we'd only seen one Qunari, we'd just seen the exception:

“Not all qunari have horns,” says Dragon Age lead writer David Gaider. “Some are born without them, but it has never been considered a defect. Instead the mark is considered special, indicating one who is clearly meant for a special role in their society—as a Ben-Hassrath who enforces religious law or as an envoy to other races. It is also not uncommon for qunari who abandon their beliefs to remove their own horns, for reasons not yet clear.”

(from http://www.gameinfor...ri-evolved.aspx)

The article also says they wanted to create more space between the races, which I suppose the Welsh accents also accomplishes.

Merrill speaks with a taffy accent not an Irish one.

Seriously? Irish accent? Whoever says that only saw the stereotype leprachaun paddy. Merill sounds nothing like it.

Um. Unless we played a different game, they didn't!

Merrill is the only one with a Welsh accent. The rest have Irish. Some sound Northern Irish, but still. Definitely Irish. :)

Merrill is voiced by a pretty famous Welsh actress. If you're Welsh. She's right up there with Zeta Jones.

I thought the dalish elves have Welsh accents, not Irish..... I know Merrll is played by a Welsh actress, because she's from Torchwood. And to answer your question, it was a design choice to give the races more distinct features of their own. And it makes sense different parts of the world would have different accents. Antivans have Spanish, Orlesians have French, Orzammar Dwarves have standard American accents, and Dalish elves have Welsh.

I don't know about you guys. I won't mind them discarding this lore and having DAO Sten return with horns.

The new look of the qunari race is the only change on design that I liked from DA2. Even so, I would love to see them as the normal (but very big) guys (girls?) from Origins.

It's true that the Qunari from Origins also had hornes? I only remember the mercenaries in Denerim... and those were as Sten.

It makes sense to see the hornless ones in Ferelden. It is easier for them to blend in.

Those were Tal-Vashoth, who cut their horns off to represent their rejection of the Qun.

So when you see the Qunari in DA2, you can see the "evil" in the game. I still dislike the horns, and most of the game.

I wouldn't mind Sten with horns, either. In fact I nearly insist. He deserves them.

I didn't see "evil" so much as the bull-headed nature of the Qun.

Thank you ^_^

So, basically, since all the "qunari" we see in ferelden are rebels, we dont see any horns out there.

I wonder why those tal-vashoth liked to wear shirts? I suppose that qunari-rebels from free marches aren't as smart as ferelden ones :D

I appreaciate the effort to give coherency to the new design changes, but I cant help it... I found those reasons very forced.
