I am wondering if BioWare is trolling us with this new James Vega fellow. Remember Mhairi? She had a character trailer and everything! And despite that, she still died early in the game. 

That would me bad news for people like me, who plan to do walkthroughs where nearly everyone (save Morinth and Kasumi) died during the suicide mission.

Guess my most reliable squadmates are going to be Ashley and Liara, then. Word.

Only if he's a temporary companion but he's confirmed not to be one, so no.

James Vega is a much marketed squadmate who's even getting a bonus outfit in Collector's Editions. I don't think that sets him up as temporary cannon fodder.

Bioware would not announce James vegaz as the first new squadmate for ME3 in gaming magazines if he was a redshirt. Nor would he be given an alternative outfit in the collectors edition.

The words "permanent squadmate" seems to contradict this. Not to mention that it'd be pretty pointless to make a AA outfit for a character that dies early.

I'm tempted to say no, simply because he has to fill a spot in case you have a terrible import. VS, Vega and Liara would give you three squadmates, plus whoever else is announced (if any) and temporary ones. On the other hand, we always need a minor character sacrifice, and he's a good canidate.

Will be nice if he does last an hour. Jenkins and Wilson die literally within the first ~20 minutes. That said, it seems James will be a permanent, but don't quote me.

ME team is not stupid like the DA team to hype up a character and kill them off within the first 20 mins of the game.
