I wonder that myself. I actually like the characters. Except Anders. I hate him.
I didn't like the character but I like his story arc if that makes sense

I guess they are very disappointed about the game, so that's why they also forgot all the shining points of the game, including the characters (I like them much, they are better than in the previous game. In DA:O, the NPC companions are somewhat "dull")
I don't find them dull I like them just as much as the characters in the second game. Varric and Isabella are my favs from the second

1) All of them are pretty much irrelevant to the plot. Any of them could've not been with Hawke and the events probably wouldn't have unfolded differently. But then again Hawke him/herself could've not been there and things wouldn't be different. You just couldn't shake the feeling, "why are you here? This whole thing is none of your business." And that seriously undermines their existence.
2) They're likable but pretty one-dimensional. Fenris hates mages, Anders frees mages, and Sebastian is an idiot. And that's pretty much all there is to their character. No amount of Hawke interaction could bring out a different side of their character, let alone change it. In DA:O, Morrigan, Liliana and Alistair could become vastly different characters depending on your choices, and that makes them fascinating.

Agreed. In my playthrough, Morrigan felt really bad about the whole "make a baby, then I leave" plot, because of the romance we had. She almost sounded like she was having trouble going through with it. My friend didn't romance Morrigan, and she was just like "look let's do it." Because of that romantic aspect to it I actually had a really hard time picking that decision, and part of me did it because if I didn't , she'd leave sooner
I think the character's had potential, but they needed to be more fleshed out, and the conversations could have been a lot better. One thing I really miss from DA:O was having those conversations with Allister about anything from life to, well, "licking a flag pole." I felt like I was actually having a conversation, not picking the tone of my response.

Nope, he was gorgeous in DA:A.

It's a shame that the characters are perhaps TOO unique in that they come across as one-dimensional. If Anders speaks, you know its to talk about mage rights. If Isabela speaks, well, you know. Dragon Age Origins had an incredible cast and so it will always be in that shadow. The DAO characters all seemed to be multi-layered.
I think the main issue wasn't the companion themselves, but more the lack of being able to talk to companions. I'm not talking about being able to chat anywhere (although that's a decent feature that was removed); I liked being able to walk up to the companions at the camp and talk about a whole host of things. In DA2, it seems very forced; get quest, go to house, interact once or twice with the cutscene, then leave... It felt like instead of taking your own decisions, you were simply choosing a slightly different personality for the main character as the game took you on its linear turn of events. You weren't interacting with the characters, simply watching somebody else have a few short conversations with them.
So while they had potential and are certainly memorable, I think it's a shame that we'll probably never get a game like Origins again because the player voice actor makes it a waste of resources.

I think the new characters are mostly likable except for the idiot that is Sebastian. But upon playing the game twice I realized why the complaints are there.

But then again Hawke him/herself could've not been there and things wouldn't be different. You just couldn't shake the feeling, "why are you here? This whole thing is none of your business." I actually thought the companions had a lot more to do with the plot than the ones in DA:O. Other than Alistair, none of the characters in DA:O have anything to do with the main story line, other than Morrigan offering the Dark Ritual at the end. Whereas Anders actions are pivotal to the 3rd act, Isabela is important to the 2nd act, Bethany/Carver are potentially a significant motivating factors for Hawke's choices in the 3rd act, Varric's personal quest is tied to an object of significance to the main plot, Aveline's position as Captain of the Guard is relevant to a couple of main plot questlines. I can't speak for Sebastian (but he's a DLC character), but all the other characters except Fenris have clear ties to the main quest lines of either Act 2 or Act 3. If you didn't have the companion characters in DA2, there'd be hardly any game left.
I agree that the characters feel one-dimensional compared to the ones in DA:O, however. It may in part be the fact that you can't have as many conversations with them and the ones you do have tend to be quest-related rather than of the "getting to know you" variety, but some of it is the writer's choice to have some characters (Anders and Fenris are particularly bad) talk obsessively about their issues in a way none of the DA:O characters did. And I really dislike the friendship/rivalry mechanics, in part because much like the paragon/renegade thing in ME, it penalizes players for trying to chart a middle path.

And see I think Anders in DA2 is the best character ever in the history of all writing!
DAA Anders was lame and not even one sided

Of them all Fenris was the only one that didn't move me one way or the other. I found him both hard to like and hard to hate.

The game featured one of my favorite companions of all time (Isabala) and the only companion I ever purposely killed (Anders). So I think they did pretty good this time around to inspire such a range.

I think I like the characters the very best where I can't go 100% one way or the other on their personal problems--and when they also seem to have some definite reasonable perspective of their own. I adore Sten and Varric. I like Fenris and Shale, Leliana and Isabela and Aveline. Anders, Merril, Carver, Morrigan, Alistair, Wynne and Oghren I just was never that concerned with. Do their quests, keep em happy, don't take 'em with me for the most part.
I don't see that so much has changed, I have pretty much the same reaction to companions in any of Bioware's games. Some I like, some I'm indifferent to. Can't think of any I DESPISE.
