I mean the whole reason for the citadel is to have the heads of the major galactic civilisations in the one place, to control the realay network and have records on each species, so surely the reapers would first want to launch an assault there again.

Because they're coming from the south and working their way up, they hit the batarians first, then humans, next is the citadel and krogans.

thats fair enough but i mean the whole idea of the citadel was to be able to quickly disrupt communications and cut of the relay system causing widespread chaos, by not going for the citadel first and wasting time on the way surely they are just giving the galaxy the wake up it needs to finally fully realize the threat the reapers pose.

You prevented the citadel from being taken in ME1. Would you like a repeat of ME1?

Their plan was to start at the Citadel. You ruined that in ME1 and they were forced to go the long route.

A horrible paraphrase of Jesse Houston words:
"The Reapers are definitely not ignoring the rest of the galaxy, they just started reaping from the Hegemony systems and moved on to systems of the Alliance and Earth."

In time, they will attack the Citadel. In time.

I think it's more a personal grudge with Shepard. I mean, he KILLED Sovereign, humiliated Harbinger, and stopped them, at least temporarily. Nobody has ever done that before. They are, in a word, pissed. Humans must die first, and that will be their downfall. Plus, Shepard can't REALLY beat them all, nobody can. They know this. So, attacking Earth first, getting rid of Shepard first, no big deal. But, in their superiority complex they are undermestimating us humans, especially Shepard... so.... they will lose, and Shepard will do a Nelson Laugh at Harbinger before he fires off that last missile.

The collectors were suppose to take back the citadel with the Human Reaper. Now that all the Reapers are coming, they will use the Citadel to retreat back into Darkspace after they "Reap".

For now, wipe out the homeworlds, then the Citadel will be the final battle.

That's Reaper tactics, they just forgot to include Shepard in the equation.

Well we have a Reaper IFF. It has probably been replicated and issued to all military ships, to prevent being cut off from the relays.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess the reason they start at Earth has something to do with TIM opening a route for them. Since Shep foiled their other two entry routes.

They changed their strategy. They would normally use the Citadel to disable the relay network and cripple the opposing fleets' mobility, but now that a Reaper IFF has been captured they cannot prevent it from being copied and used to negate their advantage of sole use of the relays.

Also, the Citadel is likely to be the most heavily defended installation in the galaxy. Lacking surprise, they are working their way in from the edges instead of making their initial strike through it.

Why would he do that? They'd just kill him too.

Cerberus is believed by Shepard to be Indoctrinated in ME3. (they phrased it just like that, so I suspect there's more to the story)

Earth is much closer than the Citadel from the road they're traveling on.

They started at the ass crack of the galaxy and went up north.

Yeah, pretty much Mass Effect 1 and 2 is delaying the coming of the Reapers. The Citadel was their first and preferred way of invading the galaxy, but Shepard prevents it in ME1. And in ME2's Arrival DLC, you also thwart their incoming fleet. In Mass Effect 3. The Reapers finally say "f*** it" and just start marching in from the bottom of the Milky Way.

Really?

How do we know that? Because Cerberus is attacking Shep?

Because Shepard flat out says so in the E3 demo.

Yes when under attack by cerberus troops (wearing full faced helmets I might add) Shepard explains they're indoctrinated (probably the only reason Shepard can think of why cerberus is attacking him). I wouldn't put too much faith into this single remark by Shepard though. As I said he could just be guessing for lack of a better reason why Cerberus is his enemy now.

@OP

Don't worry. The reapers will eventually attack the citadel and that smug council will get what's coming to them (I hope):pinched:

The Reapers have already tried their secret surprise attack plan once and failed. Now that they're coming en masse, there would seem to be no need to go after the CItadel first. Maybe they feel that the fact that a human (Shepard) stopped them cold is a reason to go after Earth first? Maybe they want Shepard really badly? Who knows. In any case, I'm sure they probably mean to take the Citadel back when they feel like it.

They aren't really going after Earth first. As I understand, they're attacking multiple worlds, at once, after hitting the Batarians, and then using that relay to get everywhere else in a flash.
