Jacob has shown no aptitude whatsoever for hacking, just because he stupidly volunteers for every single position Miranda mentions doesn't mean he's a good pick. And worse, the galaxy is completely screwed when somebody as dangerous as Shepard as a character is killing people he happens to dislike. Besides, what possible reason could Shepard have for disliking Jacob? "Gee, I hate that guy. Always following orders and saluting me all time? What a jerk."
And obviously, people can play however they want, as luckily there are no actual consequences for doing so. It's still stupid and petty to get people killed because you dislike them. People are also essentially free to download music and movies illegaly. It's still piracy, even though they are highly unlikely to ever be charged with a crime. They're free to play how they like, and I'm free to express my opinion about how they play.
Who said anything about Shepard disliking Jacob? I said
the player behind Shepard disliking Jacob and having his/her Shepard happen to perform an action that results in Jacob's death. I happen to like Jacob and consequently my Shepard likes him. However, there could be a Shepard who dislikes how Jacob seems to challenge nearly every decision Shepard makes or feels Jacob isn't responsive enough to her advances, etc. etc. I would think anyone who is experienced in roleplaying would be able to come up with a reason for their character to like/hate any other character.
*shrugs* Again, you say it's 'stupid' and 'petty' based on nothing more than what you seem to think is the (only?) right way to play. I say it's making the game more enjoyable for yourself. Whatever. Although, piracy is a poor example as it's not open to interpretation nor opinion, you're either stealing based on your society's rules or you're not.
