The clock ticks to zero.

The last chance for the galaxy is gone. There is still fighting, but the organics of the galaxy have ultimately lost. It is only a matter of time before extinction occurs.

Instead of spawning a gameover prompt, wouldn't it be better to let the player retain control of Shepard for a little longer, get an opportunity to speak to squadmates about the failure to stop the Reapers, and what they might do to survive (or die quietly and peacefully while there is still the chance).

Anyone ever read the Cold War novel "On the Beach?" Yeah, Shepard & Co's final moments should mirror that of the last several chapters of the book.

Ultimately, the player should be given a choice: Allow Shepard to commit suicide and let the credits roll, or reload from an earlier save.

Shepard should be given the following options:

1. Digest some cyanide.
2. Shoot him/herself in the head.
3. Hang him/herself.
4. Drive the Normandy into Harbinger and give one last "**** you" to the Reapers, with Shepard pointing his/her middle finger at Harbinger just before impact.

So, no one wants a "On the Beach" style ending, where nuclear radiation spreads across the Earth and there isn't a damn thing anyone can do other than commit suicide or die of radiation poisoning.

You people....

Dr. Strangelove. What a classic. I love Stanley Kubrick.

Yeah, a kamikaze death would much more noble. A bullet to the head seems selfish when he/she could take out as many enemies as they can before they go.

Or something similar. ;)

It would certainly be very chilling for one of the endings.

That might be cooler. I'll add that to the OP.

If they make a kamikaze ending I'm definitely making an asian Shepard.

Even if all hope is lost, I'd rather die trying to kill the reapers and prevent this from happening in the future.

Suicide is the coward's way out. My Shepard is no coward.

Just what is this fascination with death? First, it's killing off squad members just because the player can and now trying to kill of Shepard?
I grant you the fact that ME2 allows, through your own morbid decisions, to let parts of your crew and squad die but why? Just because you can you do?

Actually in some ways a personal end can also be suitable, instead of trying to take as many with him/her.
Especially considering any offensive finish will most likely have negligable impact, perhaps Shepard might decide instead to reflect for a moment, inwardly, before doing the deed.

It doesn't only have to be if you fail to stop the Reapers.

It could also be written in, when after you complete the objective on the final solo mission, there's no chance of rescue whatsoever and you know you'll die by the hands of the Reapers. So you have an option to kill yourself - it'd be amazing if the scene is pulled off similar to this.

I wanted an "On the Beach"-esque ending for ME3.

I think Shepard doing some last stand/ cirten death mission would be okay. But the idea of Shepard shooting himself or whatever seems a bit dumb to me.

I'm thinking Halo: Reach pulled it off pretty well.

Not really. I'm sure Shepard would rather commit suicide rather than be turned into a husk.

Lazy answer is lazy.
You want an ending where Shepard dies?  Just start the game and let the first vorcha kill you.  There.  Such a downer that game was.  Then, actually play the game to win.
