This thread is to discuss the quality of romance in mass effect so far and what we want it to be in Mass Effect 3!

So far i think romance in the last 2 games have not been fully explored, they practically mean nothing, just a conversation making out naked and thats it, it dont form any significant part of the story at all.

For Mass Effect 3 i would like to see better make out scenes and more story and quality to the romances.
Please share your thoughts!

We only got naked in ME1. Liara's romance is top quality for those that played the LotSB. Hope we get more like that in ME3.

I think that romance is one of the most underdeveloped aspects of RPG games. The heart and soul of an RPG is that it evokes emotion. This is why people love the characters found in Balder's Gate all the way through to Mass Effect. The heroic and villainous archetype is always well defined, but the interaction between characters is usually dicey, particularly with love interests.

The primary focus has to be on propelling the main plot, but when you flesh out the supporting characters there is a wealth of things that can be done, but romance is one of the least explored among them.

Most of the romances that I have seen in games have been shallow, poorly written, or merely done as an afterthought. What these forums has taught me is that people are clamoring for romance exploration. I think that this is because it allows us to experience a whole new level of game interactions.

For the game designers, it offers a whole new vista to explore character development and exposition, and it allows voice actors to stretch their skills. In ME2, Jack was an ideal example of drilling down in order to get to know the person that Jack was. However, all romances do not have a happy ending.

For each romance that leads to happily ever after, there are those that make you wish that you were never born. Because peoples psychology is so variant, the opportunities to make a romance go horribly wrong is also a distinct possibility. Jealousy, envy, and other emotions can also be brought into play in such a character arc.

I think that romance can be a tool to build fans for a franchise if they are done well and with realism in mind. Further, DLC and expansion packs can improve profits and solidify such support for future endeavors.

I kinda liked the romances in ME1 and 2. They weren't too deep, but they shouldn't have been. They had **** to do. Saving the Galaxy and all that. Didn't really leave a lot of time.

I always liked the romances in ME1 the most. They felt more natural and not as forced as in ME2.

In ME1 you gradually build a relationship with your LI from the very first mission whereas in ME2 you have to wait until you get that squadmember loyal and suddenly they're interested in your Shepard. That struck me as odd.

Good so far to me it seems they put the most focus on the Shepard/Liara romance which I don't mind it's who I always pick. Makes me wonder if thats Biowares choice for romance for Shepar.

Mass Effect's romances feel a bit tacked on to me - I'd much prefer if Shep had a guy/girl back home he/she saw on shore leave, or something of that nature. That wouldn't stretch credibility as much as having Shep hitting on a subordinate, and would make the aspect of the game where you're fighting to save the galaxy a lot more personal. As is, the romances didn't strike me as being as believable as, say, the romances in Dragon Age: Origins, Sands of Time, or Witcher/Witcher 2, or the "romance" in Psychonauts.

I played ME2 before ME1 - Bought ME1 because I wanted to see what happened before the whole Mass Relay 4 shebang.

Coming from DA:O and other RPGs, the ME1 romance was hella better than the "hey, lets test reach and flexibility" or the absolutely *cringe-inducing* hitting on Jacob. Kaidan was my ME1 hookup, and the arc, despite the ninjamance-tendencies was better, more realistic - especially the locker scene. I also like the fact that in all games - you don't have to go there - what with saving the galaxy and all ;-)

I'm wondering if the ME2 romance was toned considerably down because of the completely ridiculous sexbox accusations about the love scenes in ME1. I don't think any game developer wants a smut-sticker to be the primary identifier for their game. 90 hrs of gameplay and what you get is a bad rap for 30 secons of nekkid.

Me, I hope the ME3 romance is much more like ME1.

I really hope more complexity in romance conversations and better scenes. In ME2 just had "cuddle" scenes. (if they had shown Tali´s face i would be happy, but...)

Miranda's scene had her straddling Shepard in a bra. I thought that was pretty showy.

But you must admit the lack of sound effects was disheartening.

I prefer the Romance scenes in ME 1, but if we could get both, I think that would be awesome! Have them look like the one's from ME 2 1st then like in ME 1 before saving the Day, Again!!

Showy yes, but why on the engineering deck instead of her office?  That never made much sense to me considering that Ken, Gabby, and Tali work down there.   That seemed more like a fling to me instead of a romance.

Not forced? Almost since first scene with Liara she wanted me, because the Prothean thing. Next time I talk with her she loves me because of me and not the Prothean thing. And a few scenes later (at end of game) I jump into bed with Liara eventhough I was aiming for Ash. Or well, I was aiming for the catfight then I'd chooce Liara (because I had heard about the LotSB by then).

My point is, I had no say in things, and it feelt like Shepard and Liara had spoken in private without me, or how could she suddenly start to love me like that whille I was away on mission with Garrus and Tali.

Nah, if anything, that feelt forced and I feelt kinda left out in the progress. I wonder what else my character have been doing without me (except seeing Tali's face :crying:).

In future characters I'll try explore Ash and Kaidan, and this time being firm that I do NOT want Liara (otherwise she'll ambush me while I'm not looking and we end up in bed again :pinched:).

I would like the romance to be handled in a way that conveys that the entire galaxy is clinging to life by a thread. A scene where the romance becomes heavily sexual is fine, as long as it is not overly done. I would much prefer many scenes of worry and despair in relation to the couples future and how it may never be because of the Reaper threat. A unique scene at the end of the game for each romance would be a good way of wrapping up the story also, not leaving anything in the wind.

The more time spent on Romancin', the better. There'll always be a couple of people saying "Noz, we went AKSHUNZ1!", but I think for most of the BSN, consensus has been achieved.

That would be nice!

Well, about Miranda's scene... hmmm... its a little showy, but not enough xD, a hug in the floor wearing a bra, to me <_<

A lot of people on BSN don't care much for romance, and even then BSN is only a small fraction of the Mass Effect fanbase.

In my opinion, too much of it would kill the game. I'd much rather they focus on the general RPG and gameplay elements. Romance can be improved with fan fics & art.

Personaly I have a hard time adapting fan fics into my Shepard Canon. But that could be because I don't know how ME3 will turn out and thus tear apart some fan fics we've seen so far.

Either way, I personaly prefer to have a in deept romance built into the game, nothing any game really haven't been able to provide yet. Baldurs Gate 2 was probably the best game so far at it, with you having a LONG course of dialogs with your teammate before it turns to anything. The total opposite of Liara in ME1.

i have seen some angry reports about how explicect the romance scenes were in ME1, i dont surprise me that romance was dumbed down a bit in ME2.

For ME3 i would like to see more story behind the romance with whoever you choose(male or female)(gay or str8) as well as the same if not more explicite sex scene in ME3.

The following i may not see in ME3 but i hope to see in other RGPs, romance with more than one character while your partners have no problem with that! For me i see no problem with multiple limited romances  so long as your partners know!

Looking for a bit more depth to the relationships ME2 relationships were shallow. Miranda's could have been great with the added tension of her being with the Cerberus, Tali didn't start till the very end. Since ME3 is the last one I hope Bioware does them justice, but if all the LI are not permanent squad mates people are going to be pissed.
