For those who like Liara and Tali, how about a comparison?

Two of my most favorite female xenomorphs come together for an action packed ending to one of the best video gaming trilogies ever. I've always liked both characters, never favoring one over the other. They both have their spikes, their points of appeal, etc.

I like Tali because:

1. She has a nerd chic. (I always fell for the girls who had that nerd chic.)
2. She is somewhat idealistic and naive at times, which greatly softens her character.
3. Ultimately, her warm disposition towards Shepard is perhaps the major reason why players are drawn in. Her romance in ME2 is perhaps the only one where I got a "warm and fuzzy" feeling over.
4. She has no real spikes or adversial traits, save her hostility against synthetics.

I like Liara because:

1. She is strong-willed and independent, willing to spar with Shepard, but perfectly well-heeled at the same time. A demonstration of maturity that Tali doesn't quite have.
2. She doesn't give up. Not even after Shepard died.
3. She originally had a nerd chic in ME1, but this gave itself away towards a more mature, adult-like disposition in ME2.
4. Unlike Tali, I feel as if the relationship between Liara and Shepard is more balanced, with one supporting the other emotionally in equal measure. Tali's relationship is a wee more lopsided, with Shepard doling out more emotional support to Tali than Tali does for Shepard.

Again, I love both, and I guess I need to make a choice in ME3...

@XX55XX Gonna respond to your points.
Tali:
1. I agree. This was tolerable in ME1 when she had spunk, which mysteriously disappeared in ME2.
2: Define soften. I don't think her idealism and naivité are necessarily good traits. If anything, it makes me question why I keep her on board the Normandy instead of sending her home to the Migrant Fleet to grow up and stop being such a child.
3: "Warm disposition." This may be an issue of semantics, but I'd rather call it "creepy stalking" given how forcibly and jarring her crush for Shepard was revealed. Also, her romance in ME2 made me feel sick to the stomach. It was like watching Mal shagging Kaylee in Firefly.
4: Okay. The robot-hate is still a pretty big thing now that we'll be looking for support from the geth.

Liara:
1: Yes, which is why I prefer Liara as a character AND a romance interest. Both characters were cute nerds in ME1 (Liara moreso, being more shy), but unlike Tali, Liara actually grew up instead of regressing into a shrinking flower in need of love and attention.
2: Which is admirable. However, she turned into a frigid, cruel b*tch while "not giving up", which of course is never a good thing. But she grew out of that in LotSB, so everything turned out alright.
3: Yes, see 1.
4: Yes, which is why I prefer her to Tali.

Subjective opinions gonna subject, of course.

I prefer Liara. My character is usually a female though. So no relationship with Tali. But I like Liara more because you can actually see her face. More emotions. Also, she looks damn fine considering she's over 100 years old.

I believe Tali develops into a more mature and responsible character by ME2, like Bioware intended.

I wish....

Seriously, i just can't decide between them. in ME1 my LI was Liara, and in my first game in ME2 I decided to give it a chance to Tali ( I mean, she looks sooo fragile and helpless) But since Liara was comfirmed as ME3 squad member im going to complete the game again, and im gonna be "loyal" to my very first love xDDD (besides im wanna complete the suicide mission keeping everybody alive...), i hope that Liara still loving Shepard, if she not, i think i could try a m/m romance option

I was actually interested in Tali over Liara even from the first game, she had that appeal noone else had. But as the option was not there, I somehow got ambushed by Liara and she ended up bedding me. In ME2 it was all Tali and no Liara. Replaying my ME2 run just now, but I intend to be even harsher on Liara on LotSB to make sure she understand that Tali is all that matters now.

Well this will make things real interesting in ME3. Liara was the most popular romance in ME1 and Tali was the most popular in ME2. I already made 3 saves to see what happens(one for Tali, one for Liara and one for both :P). Oh and by the way I really like how tali developed in ME2 and Liara, not so much!

I compared them long ago, when ME2 just came out because in ME1 Liara was the main "sweet naive nerd chic" and ME2 Tali fell into the same category. Now I think they'll be developed further in "love/friendship to Shepard fights with distancing from world as SB" for Liara and "one of the most loyal defenders of own people in suddenly changing galaxy" for Tali... but it's just my speculation.

For "love them both" problem I'll repeat my usual mantra: having the different playthroughs is the best option.

So when she gave Admiral Koris hell I was imagining that? How about when she told the racist Volus off? Or how about Jacob when she got on board the Normandy? Or Ken when he thinks she can't hear him? Or even Garrus on the stairs when he teased her about the elevator convos?

Hell, there's far more cases of her being spunky and fierce in ME2 than in ME1.

The only person she gets shy towards is Shepard and even then only when the relationship between them is initiated. Even then she's moreso flustered than outright shy, she is the one who actually comes out and says how she's feeling first, not Shepard and Tali is certainly willing to give him hell if he does something she vehemently disagrees with.

I don't think she's idealistic or naive in ME2. She seems completely cynical of Cerberus' involvement in Shepard's mission and along with Garrus is one of the few that warns him a betrayal is in the works, she doesn't trust Legion (though she is able to put the mission ahead of her personal concerns - a sign of maturity methinks).

I daresay she's got a very keen handle on the reality of the situation. The only person she has a blindspot towards is her father.

Tali wasn't the one who grabbed Shepard's stuff and encased them in a shrine in her apartment. Tali carried a flame for Shepard after his death but she most definitely moved on with her life. I like Liara as of Shadowbroker but she definitely exhibited more creepy stalker behavior throughout this series thus far than Tali.

A lot of the points you make are stretching really hard not to mention ignoring a lot of what actually happens in the game.

Liara turned out to be ruthless ruler of the underworld. Thats why she is dead to me...
Tali on the other hand with her warm appeal is ideal for my paragon femshep.

I prefer Liara.

Tali comes across as too young and naive in relationship terms for Shepard. Liara is an equal LI partner for Shep (in ME2), Tali not.

Funnily enough... Though they're both young Liara struck me as more naive and only got some of the same kind of "edge" in the shadowbroker DLC.

Eh, Tali is the one who initiates the relationship with Shepard, she's the one who actually comes out and expresses her feeling, Shepard cannot even make overtures towards her prior to that and its Tali that makes her desire for a physical relationship known and Shepard always leaves that agency with her.

That's not to say there isn't some hero worship going on but they both do that, Liara in that sense is no different, Shepard is both their "first loves" as it were but its clear that Tali has breaking points with Shepard that if he crosses she has no interest in pursuing a relationship with him. Just because she stutters when flirting doesn't mean she's a doormat.

Liara is in superior position because she is the only character that is romanceable both in ME1 and ME2 (and probably in ME3 as well). Also her character is simply best developed: comic books, her change between ME1 and ME2 and then during LotSB. She evolves, grows up and there is an emphasis on her relationship with Shepard. In ME1 she is strongly involved into the main plot (Benezia, understanding prothean vision), too. And she is the only squaddie from ME1 that will always survive ME1 and ME2. I guess she is going to be the one of several permanent squaddies in ME3.

Is it just? No, because BW obviously favors her. Anyway, this makes her more interesting and focusing on her makes overall game experience deeper.

Quantity does not equal quality.

The 2-3 hours she had in Shadowbroker did far more to develop her character and make her compelling than ME1+2/Redemption ever did.

imo of course.

Liara gets an awful lot more attention than everone else bar Shepard and possibly TIM. I personally love that because even unromanced she's my favourite character. I still like Tali and will probably make a single Shep from ME1 to romance her in ME2 but Liara has just the right balance of knowns and unknowns to intrigue me.

I love both but Liara wins.

I like them both, but prefer Liara because...

1) She's been with my Shep since ME1
2) If it wasn't for her, our Sheps would still be dead.
3) I can "father" her children. :3
4) She's my blueberry...

Erm, yeah. As for Tali, I'm really hoping she becomes a F/F option in ME3, as I have a canon-copy Shepard waiting for her, too. :)

Liara comes off to me as more of a friend, personally. Tali also does, but I feel that she's more suited to be my personal romance.

Opinions, of course.

I agree - and that's the reason why I really don't like Liara's romance arc in ME1. But at the end of LotSB, she is very clearly an equal partner for Shepard. Tali hasn't reached that point yet (imo).

I couldn't bring myself to romance Liara in ME1, felt very unnatural and a little too spontaneous. I also found her orgasms during the deciphering of prothean visions to be a little awkward. So even though it was blatant fanservice, I'm still going to go with Tali because at least with her there was the illusion of an evolutionary relationship.

Plus she stands as my only "geek crush" to date.
