Game Version: purchased DVD copy, v.1.02 (patched to latest)
System Details:
      Configuration Utility | Summary Tab
           * Core i5 750 @ 2.67ghz, 4gm RAM
           * AT Radeon 5700 / `GB VRAM, drivers at most recent update (11.5)
           * Realtek HD Audio, drivers 6.0.1.5943
      Configuration Utility | Platforum Tab
           * Windows 7 Home Premium
           * DirectX 11

Problem is a crash that occurs at exactly the same point (post-Horizon mission, when I try and run back into the Normandy's CIC from the armoury or tech lab).  Game will freeze completely (no stuttering or anything) and will require a task manager "end program" to stop.

This exact problem happened before, about a week ago, on Korlus (it would always occur as I was running into the area with the first tank-bred krogan).  At that point I uninstalled the game, updated my drivers (video, soundcard, Visual C++ library) and reinstalled the game plus my DLC.  The game then worked fine up till the end of Horizon.

I should point out that I have finished the game twice a year ago, on this system without any major changes (eg. a reinstallation of Windows) since then.  The only difference is having installed the new DLC (I previously only had the Zaeed/firewalker stuff).  I can't see any other threads that relate back to this problem specifically and I tried the "reinstall ME2" suggestion from the commonly-asked problems thread.  I'm really scratching my head on this one, any suggestions would be appreciated!

Edit: to throw in - I can run around prior to moving through into the Normandy CIC and interact, have conversations with mordin, change my weapon loadout etc.  I can even open the door and see into the CIC, but it'll freeze the moment I step through.  The sound will still be there but the screen itself just frozen.  I have tried changing this to run in windowed mode with no luck.

Given that this problem occured once and I fixed it by reinstallation, I could obviously do that again, but if the game is going to become recorrupted every week I need to try and find out why.

Have you updated the driver for the Realtek HD audio, or still using the default driver that comes with Win7? The default driver is known to cause various problems, so its recommended to update it from either your motherboard manufacturers website, or from Realtek themselves.

If its a problem that occurs in the same spot all the time, it would either be a corrupted save, or a corrupted install. Try restarting the Horizon mission and going through again, and see if the problem still occurs afterwards. If it does, then I would suggest running a disk check, and select the option to search for and fix bad sectors. This type of check will take quite some time, so its best done either overnight, or when you are out at school/uni/work.

Thanks for the tips. The chkdsk picked up quite a bit of corrupted sectors. Unfortunately I think some of the DLC and my most recent saves were there, as they are now unable to be accessed. On the plus side at least the game appears to run again. This doesn't trouble me THAT much - the original save games seem to be fine and I wasn't THAT far in. A cautionary tale, I guess.
