Last year I played an RPG called Alpha Protocol, the game was enjoyable but very flawed. However one of the most interesting aspects of the game was that you could send and reply to emails. Now ingame this equated to increased relationships with various people and factions as wella s getting you acces to verious items etc. Since then I've always thoguht this was a brilliant idea and something I wish I could ahe done in ME2. For example you sometimes get emails from people who are commenting on something you did in the past, like the biotic terrorists with chairman Baines who might send you an email. Wouldn't it be cool to have emailed them back warning them to stay the hell away or something but the emails could get you extra thigns like added paragon/renegade points depending on your responses or changing dialogues if you meet up with these people later? Sometimes you get product adds through the mail too, wouldn't it be cool to be able to respond to these and buy new weapons or even purely cosmetic items.
Is this a good idea or not?

GTA 4 also did it with a simple system : Positive answer or negative answer... So if a frickin' GTA did it, I'd like to be able to do it in Mass Effect 3.

I think this is a good idea.

I would have had something to say to Ash when she sent me that email after Horizon, that's for sure...

Yeah, I would love to see a system like Alpha Protocol, that allowed us to give different responses.

Oh got confused with my example I meant to use the example of Dr. Wayne who worked on Akuze and Corporal Tombs who wanted to kill him for the assignment UNC: Dead Scientists.

Wasn't a love interest for me so never got the email. Will have lots of things to discuss with her soon.

Having said that, I'd love to be able to reply to emails.

AP wasn't the first game I played with Email response but I really loved the feature. I was sad I couldn't reply either in ME2. I hope they address that in ME3. Would really be a great feature.

A thousand time so in the case of LIs that aren't on the Squad this time around. You should be able to at least keep in touch via mail.

Definitely, there's a Batarian with some Prothean artifacts I need to get in touch with.

Umm... point? You sit and type for five minutes, press "send", and what, self-satisfaction? There certainly is no way to implement *chatting with AIs in an RPG game*, so whatever your reply consists of will be rendered irrelevant to the plot, and, consecutively, to the experience.

Yeah, I really liked "reply to email" feature in Alpha Protocol. It would have been a great addition to Mass Effect (2) IMHO.

You don't type for 5 minutes. You pick between several 'prewritten' letters of varying tone and send it. Which will often send you a reply based on the choice you made. Much like conversing face to face in game.

It has the same point that any conversation does in the game. Given that you got chewed out on Horizon for not writing, I'd say it would have been quite relevant to the plot if you had been able to.

Oh. Preset letters, it's like a computer terminal with a dialogue wheel.

That could work. But I wouldn't really look forward to it personally.

Alpha Protocol actually handled e-mail really well... you could respond to many e-mails and choose from a list of written tones (professional, humorous, direct, etc)  that would determine how your character replied (this also often had impacts in other small ways later in the game).

Would definitely love to see them use that simple system in ME3... was one of the few things Alpha Protocol did well.

Beyond just RP reasons it could provide practical effects as well. Here's an example:

You get an email from an Agent of the Shadow Broker offering his services to investigate things for you. (He doesn't know Liara is really the SB) You can then select from a series of prewritten replies requesting which item you'd like them to investigate. For example you might pick between Investigating Cerberus activities or trying to find out more intell on TIM.

After a predetermined period (after 1 mission) you'll recieve a reply giving you some useful intel on the topic you picked. Which might direct you towards something interesting. If you picked 'Cerberus Activities' you might get the location of a hidden base you can raid. If you picked TIM you'll get intell that will help you get an advantage against him.

That sort of thing.

I think it was either Hack (or one of the Front Mission games?) that mocked up an email/internet that the player could respond to in game. I remember really liking the function and finding it innovative.

Awesome example, I remember in Shadow Broker you could fund companies or certain activities for a possible rewars once the main mission was over so  'online activity' doesnt have to be restricted to sending emails it could be a large number of different things.

I did not romance Ahley but I would totally do a second canon playthrough solely to respond to her E-mail after horizon with a picture of my Shepard and Miranda in a compromising situation

It's an interesting idea- but they'd have to make it so that the replies were'nt generic, and the player had a fair bit of control over what it said. Then again, I'm not sure the end of the universe as we know it is the best time to go emailing your friends.

Yes, absolutely. So often I read these emails and wish I could reply to them in some way that would affect the story somehow. That would be cool.

And maybe I'm a bit masochistic, but I have also sometimes wished I could actually send money to that scam email, just for fun.

Shepard then shouts at the scammer; "Hey! You! Gimme my money back!" This then triggers a chase scene... ...complete with Yakety Sax.

Bioware, write this down.
