How about these ridiculously over-sized weapons?? Dagger = Short sword at minimum

Some of these overlap in real world history, and not all were used within the same culture. I personally like the seax (also called Hadseax, Sax, Seaxe, Scramaseax and Scramsax) because of its practical use as well as martial use. This is a knife sometimes more than 80cm long, which is longer than some swords. So saying daggers should be a certain size isn't as simple as that. Some daggers were/are shorter, some longer.

Not to mension the little rotound dwarves swinging those war hammers. When I see the dwarf in my party make a power swing I wonder how the hell he keeps his balance! He would need led boots tied to chain suspenders for that!

It always makes me laugh when my female elf is standing next to Sten [smilie]../../../../images/forum/emoticons/grin.png[/smilie]
But dual wielding daggers seems alright for her, it's like they were swords made for her size.
Well, if you use such a character and it breaks your immersion, don't make her a warrior and/or use appropriate size weapons ?

Anyway I personally like the bigger weapons - my Rogue's weapon effects and critical animations sure seem great, as opposed to wielding a tiny weapon. But I do wonder, how come when they do their backstab with such a long weapon it doesn't impale the opponent through to the other side? That'd be wicked.

It's so you can see the weapons when you zoom out. And honestly, I never noticed.
I agree. It looks ridiculous when zoomed in. But when zoomed out, it actually looks pretty fine. Atleast, I think so. I assume this is why they are so ridiculously huge. To be visible when zoomed out.

history and realism aside, I couldnt care less about either when it come to my games, what a I care about is that the weapons look silly being that big.
Ditto. Especially when you have a dwarf with a sword 2 feet taller than him.
My other one is the armor with the giant shoulder pieces stand as tall as someones head.

The things people choose to be outraged about around here are cracking me up.
Not outraged, just saying it looks silly. It is reminiscent of JRPG.
For a game that seems to be trying to paint dark realism, this part really really doesn't work for me.
This is minor, my outrage is saved for DLC fiascos.

Two-Handed swords can be of a length up to 6 foot of steel with a 2 foot handle.
For a computer game though I think they are about the right size.

So instead of creating a whole new set of animations for daggers, the developers chose to make them bigger and have a single animation for all single handed sword/dagger weapons types.
As a proof, just see an Ogre kill / finishing move animation with a two handed mace. They did not create a new animation for a mace kill, and just used the sword animation, which makes the finishing kill animation look weird at best. (Can you even stab anything with a giant mace?)

Daggers are pretty much useless in an actual fight anyway, especially against someone in armor. So they should just rename them to short swords and daggers go *poof*.
Depends HEAVILY on the type of armor. There's a reason it keeps changing over the ages, you know? Curved, one-sided blades (katana, scimitar, falchion, etc) were most effective against lightly armored enemies, up to early leather. Straight, heavier weapons or thrusting weapons were more effective against mail. And plate armor / solid helmets were actually most vulnerable to maces, hammers, and axes (specifically the spike end they put on the opposite side from the blade).
Once you're talking about armies, though, knives and daggers were more practical than 7 foot long swords. So you don't lop off the heads of your friends fighting nearby, and can actually get your weapon around before the guy you're trying to kill stabs you repeatedly in the face.

Well actually in history short swords have often been refered to as long daggers

A couple looked like toys when I equipped them. I have no problems with the long sword and 2 handed sword sizes. I agree the "daggers" are more like short swords but I am ok with that. But I'd like my duelweilding axe warrior to be able to have something a bit bigger than a mini hatchet.
