The thing is... weapons aren't categorised in a simple manner in the real world, compared to the standard fantasy way (from small to large): Dagger, short sword, long sword, bastard sword, greatsword.

Some of these overlap in real world history, and not all were used within the same culture. I personally like the seax (also called Hadseax, Sax, Seaxe, Scramaseax and Scramsax) because of its practical use as well as martial use. This is a knife sometimes more than 80cm long, which is longer than some swords. So saying daggers should be a certain size isn't as simple as that. Some daggers were/are shorter, some longer.

Not to mension the little rotound dwarves swinging those war hammers. When I see the dwarf in my party make a power swing I wonder how the hell he keeps his balance! He would need led boots tied to chain suspenders for that!

One-handed swords look like they were meant to be wielded with 2 hands, all other weapons are fine imo.

I think you need to give the weapons in DAO a healthy dose of "suspension of disbelief", especially the one made from a certain exotic material found in a crater. Boy does that ever look silly. Nice stats tho. :)

It always makes me laugh when my female elf is standing next to Sten [smilie]../../../../images/forum/emoticons/grin.png[/smilie]
But dual wielding daggers seems alright for her, it's like they were swords made for her size.
Well, if you use such a character and it breaks your immersion, don't make her a warrior and/or use appropriate size weapons ?

While it is true that the weapons are quite a bit bigger than what we expect, this game doesn't aim for realism. I do believe one of the developers actually stated that.

Anyway I personally like the bigger weapons - my Rogue's weapon effects and critical animations sure seem great, as opposed to wielding a tiny weapon. But I do wonder, how come when they do their backstab with such a long weapon it doesn't impale the opponent through to the other side? That'd be wicked.

I think the weapons look fine, except for the gigantic handles attached to the longswords. They're much thicker than they should be, and they're always right in your face whenever you have a conversation with anyone.

It's so you can see the weapons when you zoom out. And honestly, I never noticed.

I agree. It looks ridiculous when zoomed in. But when zoomed out, it actually looks pretty fine. Atleast, I think so. I assume this is why they are so ridiculously huge. To be visible when zoomed out.

I heard this was a game with werewolves, magic, demons, and monsters.... I guess I heard wrong.

BioWare! Please look into the weaponry and make it more realistic while we slay our dragonz!

DAMN some of you people are so friggin retarded.

history and realism aside, I couldnt care less about either when it come to my games, what a I care about is that the weapons look silly being that big.

Ditto. Especially when you have a dwarf with a sword 2 feet taller than him.

My other one is the armor with the giant shoulder pieces stand as tall as someones head.

The things people choose to be outraged about around here are cracking me up.

Not outraged, just saying it looks silly.  It is reminiscent of JRPG.

For a game that seems to be trying to paint dark realism, this part really really doesn't work for me.

This is minor, my outrage is saved for DLC fiascos.

Bioware said they made the combat animations look like they could possibly be performed by real humans. It's not about realism (obviously), it's about making it believable. And I think only the bows and the one handed swords look a little silly.

Daggers are prety useless in combat. Most combat daggers were the length shown their name should be Poniard. Usualy used with the shield in a shield wall to stab at your foes belly, ankles etc. Longswords were never used with shields as they were to unwieldly. Its only TV and Holywood that have brought this combo in.

Two-Handed swords can be of a length up to 6 foot of steel with a 2 foot handle.

For a computer game though I think they are about the right size.

I am guessing if the daggers were really small and short as they should, you would be able to see in combat that they do not reach the target and hit the air.

So instead of creating a whole new set of animations for daggers, the developers chose to make them bigger and have a single animation for all single handed sword/dagger weapons types.

As a proof, just see an Ogre kill / finishing move animation with a two handed mace. They did not create a new animation for a mace kill, and just used the sword animation, which makes the finishing kill animation look weird at best. (Can you even stab anything with a giant mace?)

Daggers are pretty much useless in an actual fight anyway, especially against someone in armor. So they should just rename them to short swords and daggers go *poof*.

Depends HEAVILY on the type of armor. There's a reason it keeps changing over the ages, you know? Curved, one-sided blades (katana, scimitar, falchion, etc) were most effective against lightly armored enemies, up to early leather. Straight, heavier weapons or thrusting weapons were more effective against mail. And plate armor / solid helmets were actually most vulnerable to maces, hammers, and axes (specifically the spike end they put on the opposite side from the blade).

Once you're talking about armies, though, knives and daggers were more practical than 7 foot long swords. So you don't lop off the heads of your friends fighting nearby, and can actually get your weapon around before the guy you're trying to kill stabs you repeatedly in the face.

great swords in this game are retarded looking and would be too heavy and cumbersome to use effectively no matter how strong you were unless you were 8 feet tall at the minimum.

Only weapon I find really over sized is the daggers. Those aren't daggers so much as they are short swords.Their ridiclously sized for daggers, but for swords their smaller/average size, so I gots no problem with them.

That said, a two handed maul in a dwarf warriors hands = amazing!

Well actually in history short swords have often been refered to as long daggers

I see no problems with the larger weapons, but IMO having things to scale or as close as possible is always the best. Also I have seen dagers as long as a foot an a half and with the hilt of a short sword... I see no problems with having large looking daggers, but think most should be small much like real life.

It's odd to see the complaint that weapons are oversized because the other day I was just thinking that most one handed Axes were really small for my human warrior.

A couple looked like toys when I equipped them. I have no problems with the long sword and 2 handed sword sizes. I agree the "daggers" are more like short swords but I am ok with that. But I'd like my duelweilding axe warrior to be able to have something a bit bigger than a mini hatchet.
