Let's say that I am lazy, forgot to backup my save games from ME1 and ME2, and elect to start a new game in ME3. Most likely, most of my squadmates are going to dead by default, but is it also likely that romances might not be possible in ME3 if you are starting from a blank slate?

Bioware has confirmed that there will be new LI's in ME3, so yes, even if everyone died in the suicide mission or you import a game there will still be options.

not only that - ME3 will have an intro, similar to Genesis, comic that PS3 players got. in that intro, you will be able to chose romances from previous game if you wish to have a pre-existing relationship as opposed to starting a new one. Not sure how it will handle suicide mission, but I'm assuming key characters would have survived by default.

I think you will have two choices for ME3 if you did not play the previous ME's which will be a default setting where it predefines everything if you want to get straight into it or a genesis mode for those who want a tailored story

very serious.
Mass Effect 3 confirmed features

since Genesis allowed you to chose if you romanced someone or no one - its logical to assume that ME3 version will do the same thing.

I think all of that will be what we see during Shepard's trial/hearing or what ever they want to call it.  Even those that import will get that intro, but we just won't be able to change anything.  Be nice to see what was done during each play through.  I'm sure most of us have more than one or two and really don't remember everything that was done over the course of both games.
