OK was in the old 2 thread and someone was asking a question and wanted opinions no shocker there but the post I did to reply to him/her now has me thinking of the news and updates we hear or heard on the elevators in ME and just running around or finding radio terminals in ME2. What if 8 out 10 news issues you hear you could act on them as sidequests? I know we got some of this in ME but what if we up that about to a lot more so if players get their interests peaked by the news or hearsay they can say I think I’ll detour. This type of questing would be in addition to any npc sidequest the player chooses to engage in.

The one I used for an example was Fairisfield colony, someone on our ship says they got attacked well in FO3 fashion I hear things like this and go, “ Sounds like a place I might want to be,” now if I had the option I would’ve gone to FF or using say Avida or the human embassy found out where FF was and went there if the rumor was true it’d be abandoned and I could rob it blind for everything but say I show up and the rumor is only simi accurate the colony is devastated but there are bodies everywhere and clearly not a collector attack turns out heretic geth decided to make a new home here and put it near or ontop of the old city now I’ve got issues I didn’t expect.

Samething could happen with other tasks to that missing girl on the Citadel who was working and went missing maybe I decide I want to look into that some more turns out the keepers didn’t eat her I run into a slavery ring that gets workers like her or duct rats and hauls them off. Not everything needs to be a twist but I really liked hearing the rumors or flat out hey dangerous things happening here don’t go there moments in FO3 and of course if 3dog says don’t go I want to it’s the same with this I’d like to be able to act more on the news I hear for the sake of it rather then here it is go about your day. Opinions?

I'd love to read through your post and write a good response, but it doesn't really make any sense.

MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

...are you seriously using IE4?

That's 14 years old.

Well my computer died so yeah it happens every so often the whole wall of style code and then making all my text all messed up fixed now so no worries. As far as the programs age I don't care it works.

@ Jibbed34 if you played FO3 the radio updates you get from the character DJ 3dog he gives you news about the world and it's up to the player to (if they want to) seek the people, places, or trouble mentioned most of the news you hear you can go and act upon. Like in one case he says a town has gone silent it normally would always have someone come out to trade with the caravans that passed by but no one has gotten anybody from the town for awhile.

Someone hearing this might think Ok great for them, other players go I want to go find this town and if you do you get a mission to save a kid and his family from the monsters there. Same idea but inspace and w/o a DJ our DJ in this case would be the Citadel news, Omega news, any other homeworld news channels, and our crew hearing rumors on various subjects.

I would be concerned about security vulnerabilities in such an old build of a browser.

I understand what you're saying. If we listen to a news terminal that says a colony is being attacked by slavers and opportunists taking advantage of the invasion. Should we be able to chose if that becomes a sidequest? That could be good if it's on the way to another plot destination and doesn't interfere too much with the main story.

Since this is the last of Shep's story then I would rather BW cram as many missions in it as possible. Can't really go wrong with added missions no matter how large or small. If it prolongs the ending then I'm all for it. I've said it once and I'll say it again, I Want It All.

Also being able to do these type of news quest could allow players to really extend the game after they've completed it. Maybe a few new bosses could be opened up if you play certain overlapping and multi goal sidequests after the game ends.

@ TheKillerAngel and SwobyJ thanks for the concern but if China wants to hack me they'll do it. You'd be so paranoid if you knew how easily people can find out all sorts of things on you if they pay some guy $20.

Not China, nor hackers. Just spyware, etc - random junk like that, which can still compromose your financial info without any person/group specifically targetting you.

Totally agree, there were a lot of times while I was playing ME2 when ia was hearing the new and i thought "great, it's going to trigger a sidequest just like the first one", but nothing happened, I expect that BW would bring this back and even more quest, looking for sidequest while scanning planets was very boring and when i did all of the scanned quests, I swore that i won't do it again until ME3 is released.

I have played FO3 and strangely that DJ was very helpful sometimes.

Countries like China or Russia have no interest in random people like you or me. Information/Cyberwarfare cells target corporations or important figures to gain high-value information. Also, I have used information lookup services before (I tried using one on myself) and the information was pretty substandard. I have nothing to worry about because nobody gives two sh*ts about a 20 year old college student.

My concern isn't out of paranoia. The browser you are using is so old that it is extremely vulnerable to all sorts of malware, exploits, and other attacks that can really screw around with your computer. Do you have top of the line security software? I can tell you right now that IE4 is ridiculously vulnerable to all sorts of ActiveX expoits.

Malware doesn't just come from porn sites or warez sites - many sites can get hijacked and launch "drive by downloads," which are increasingly typical. These drive by downloads often auto-install a rogue security software program that shuts down many of your computer's functions under the guise that your computer has viruses. The software then demands payment so that it can "clean" your computer.

Just download Google Chrome, which is not only faster but more secure. (Bit9 would have you believe otherwise but in the history of Pwn2Own Chrome is the only browser that has never been succesfully exploited).

^ Perhapse but someone is always for your info any bit helps your name gets someone a fake ID, your SS# gets someone a new bank account or job, your home address can be used to fake out bill companies, ect. Every scrap of info someone can get off another has value its only a matter of to whom. But I'll look into the Chrome see where that goes.
