Okay so I have compelted ME1 and ME2 as a soldier for the story. I chose soldier because I always found ME2 powers a big confusing. Half the time the powers don't function when enemies have shield/armor/barrier.
However, I just stumbled upon this video:
And HOLY SMOKES everything that guy is doing is working, he even seems to shoot powers at enemies with shields/armor/barriers.
Can someone explain to me how this works this video was very very entertaining and I had no idea ME2 could be played like this.

The key to playing Adept (and/or using powers) on Insanity lies in 'combined arms'
You've a squad and weapons at your disposal - excellent for stripping shields/armor/barriers; you've got Singularity (and Stasis bonus power) to trap/hold enemies who still have protection up; with protection out of the way you can go nuts with all the other (biotic) powers.
It takes practice and you'll need to keep your eyes open to spot opportunities waiting to be exploited using your biotic powers (pause can help to get a good overview of what's going on across the field). Also a fair warning, Adepts are the best class to toss around enemies but they're also the most vulnerable class b/c they're lacking 'oh crap' powers. Playing in a run & gun fashion on Insanity will get you killed whenever you make a mistake. Getting familiar with CQC fighting first should be helpful - the Vanguard is ME2's ultimate CQC class and the Sentinel's Tech Armor allows extreme mobility even under heavy fire.
When you're comfortable fighting out in the open; it shouldn't be too difficult to do the same thing with an Adept. It's challenging, but very rewarding if all goes as planned. Check Curunen's link for more info or send me a PM if you have more questions or need help.
Happy hunting!

2 questions
i'm going on recruiting Grunt now and i know i'll have to hit Horizon right after.
so
1) who would you recommend as squadmates on Horizon ?
2) which bonus power would be most helpful ?
here's what i'm at now :

i'll likely do some experimenting restarting the mission with various squad combos but i'd be grateful for some tips

For horizon mordin is your best friend. You'll be dealing with lots of armour and his incinerate is indispensable. As to your second squaddie there are a few options. I would take Miranda for her warp and squad buffs. Grunt is also a decent choice since he excels at swatting aside husks and has squad incendiary. Jacob can be useful here also for his squad incendiary ammo that will help against armour and a second pull can be useful for warp bombing.
As far as your build goes I would prioritise maxing out singularity and warp. I like heavy warp and heavy singularity for insanity playthroughs (though some people prefer the wide). For a bonus power stasis is great and from a lore perspective fits the class perfectly. Barrier is also good and has saved my bacon a number of times. It really shines when you've got your cooldown bonuses and can encourage a more aggresive type of play.

thanks muchos ,
i forgot to mention i completed Zaeed and Kasumi's loyalty missions wo both are available with powers unlocked.
I saw Bozorgmehr's video with KAsumi using the grenade to stun Harbinger. But he was also at level 15 which i won't manage to reach before Horizon , unless i complete Project Overlord before recruiting Grunt. .. decisions, decisions ...

Personally I've never found a place on my squad for kasumi with my adept. Her flashbangs are great for staggering the enemy making her a great vanguard squaddie. I believe her passive talent is buggie so i wouldn't invest points in this. As for Zaeed, access to squad disruptor is his main use. I wouldn't bother with him on horizon since disruptor ammo is useless against the enemies you'll be facing.

The two most used squaddies for me on Horizon are Grunt and Miranda. Grunt gives either inferno or squad incendiary(depends on mood when leveling) good survivability and fairly hard hitting(ARs). Miranda gives another warp, bonuses to squad, smg for barriers and decent survivability. I know people like Mordin, but for me I just can't seem to use him effectively and have him survive well, I know it is probably just me.
Jacob I don't like for his SG and limited damage to things other than with weapons.
Kasumi does ok, but to me not as well as Miranda or Grunt.
Zaeed is great for shield missions or synthetic missions which Horizon isn't.
Jack is ok, but I don't like her not having a direct damage power, and her warp isn't active yet. Plus shotguns again.....
Garrus is better on shield missions and his ap isn't active yet.

Grunt i always took with me when playing soldier and sentinel .
miranda would be a first here.
thinks i'll run the mission with one and if i'm not happy , i'll just restart with the other, lol.
... got this feeling i'm gonna die a few times.
and thanks for all the tips.

Mordins's survivability is an issue. I have to micromanage him or he spends his time taking dirt naps :-) I find the balcony type cover middle left at the last part of horizon is a great place to park him but you have to watch the 3rd wave (i think!) when husks spawn right behind that point.
Besides his combat skills i like his banter "flammable, inflammable - doesn't matter!"
It's hard not to recommend Miranda for just about every mission especially as an adept. You get a shield stripper, warp bomber and weapon damage buffer all in one.

i'm almost done with grunt'recruit now and i took miranda and garrus . Thing i find with playing adept is i'm so focused on doing my own thing i don't have as much time to take care of positioning my squad and Garrus is always going right out there in the open, ******.
I don't know how they've been programmed but i find Garrus and Zaeed are incredible if i play rambo style , they're always right with me . But i can't do that as an adept, not yet at least... this adept needs to adapt.

completed Horizon.
I brought mordin but hardly used the incinerate The husks were no problems , i used the arc projector once on a bunch of them, which instantly destroyed their armor, then used throw and a bit of melee and smg shots.
for the scions, i'd throw stasis at one while using my pistol on the other .
Harbinger was handled with warp , pistol and/or arc projector and lots of strafing.
Also i found by using stasis on the collectors 's shields , it instantly took those down and after i could just gun them down and use singularity /throw .
i'm getting to enjoy the adept .
so thanks for the tips, in retrospect i think Miranda would have proven more useful with her overload but i'm not restarting the mission since it went well.
... the arc projector is becoming my favorite hw .

If you don't want Stasis, barrier makes a good 'oh crap' power

so i hear, but it's better once i get the cooldown upgrade which i haven't yet.
i'll certainly try it out .

i took Kasumi and Grunt on Samara's and Thane's recruitements and Kasumi's flashbang is proving very useful .

Barrier is a VERY good ''oh crap'' button as it is instant cast. It saved my bacon many times on insanity as an adept.

one question about barrier which i never tried before :
does it endure ? Like for example how many fire shots from Harbinger can it take ?

To me Barrier doesn't last long enough on Insanity to be worth the cool, and on lower levels I never really need it enough to justify the cool either. I have defaulted back to either Stasis, or Energy Drain, after just a few missions trying to use it on past plays. For some it works wonders and they love it, but I hate giving up Stasis too much to take it. Until you get the damage reduction to shields, no shields last long anyway on insanity, and for the most part I would rather be killing enemies than trying to protect myself. Otherwise protection through the death of enemies rather than adding protections around myself.

i must say i do love my stasis ... i just discovered on thane's mission ( on the bridge atop the towers ) that throwing stasis at rocket drones kills them ...excellent.
i can also manage vanguards , engineers and centurions in cqc till their down to health .
but i do die sometimes from not finding cover soon enough since the adept's health sucks .

Personally i love barrier on insanity but you really need to invest 10 points in it to make it worthwhile. Assuming you ignore shockwave (cause it's useless on insanity) this means you'll have to sacrifice levelling up one of your other powers. I love pull field and warp is your main damage power so I usually just leave throw at level 1. Stricitly speaking it's probably more effective to leave pull at level 1 and take heavy throw but as i said i love pull field. Playing on a 360 makes the choice easier. I hate pausing to bring up the power wheel and so can only quickly access 2 powers plus singularity.
On paper stasis is the better choice but I find it more fun to use barrier as I have the security of an extra layer of protection and can be more aggressive.

the main reason I don't like to leave pull at lvl 1 is that it doesn't last long enough (especially without the upgrades) to do a solo warpbomb. With upgrades it's enough if you hurry and/or the enemy is not far away, but as soon as your pinned down or the enemy is really far away your warp won't make it in time. And I never got the appeal of shockwave on insanity, maybe against a bunch of unprotected husks, but pull field or simple throws/pulls are always more controllable and with the lower cooldown more appealing.
I read it's a "lore unfriendly" power but I like area shield drain a lot. It damages enemy shields and boosts your own protection, if you keep using it like the barrier (of course it just works if the enemy has shields) it's just kickass and has a lower cooldown time.

Good point about energy drain. I still prefer barrier though because of the button restriction on the xbox and for some reason i hate using my powers to drain shields. I'd rather use my guns or a squadmates overload. Even my sentinel never uses overload except to blow up pyros. This means i have a power ready as soon as the shield goes down.
As an aside a sentinel can make a great adept with more survivability. Ok so he doesn't have singularity or pull but potentially he's got better cooldowns and a more powerful warp. I like that the class is a great combo finisher as long as you have a squadmate pull handy. I'm currently running with Jack and Samara and we're tearing through insanity.

Everyone is talking about Mordin's Incinerate, so I just have to add a comment about his Cryo Blast. The upgraded rank 4 of Mordin's Cryo reduces the cooldown from 9 seconds to only 4.5!!! This is the lowest cooldown of any squadmate ability.
Why is Mordin's aoe Cryo Blast so helpful on Horizon? Because Husks die as soon as they freeze. You will be fighting some Husks on Horizon. I also find Grunt and his squad incendiary ammo useful.
Also, for Shepard, I recommend maxing out Singularity and Warp first, then worrying about putting points into Pull and Throw. Rank 1 and 2 of singularity kind of suck, but it's awesome at 3 and especially 4.

my build right now is exactly what you just mentioned. I got singularity and warp at rank 4 , stasis , pull and throw at rank 1 for now.
I'll increase throw next i think.
i'd like to get to a point of being a no gun adept (leaving it to squad mates ) , but so far i still have to rely on the locust and hw.
Mordin's incinerate can be really useful against husks but i've hardly used it on Horizon , relying on arc projector and grunt's squad incendiary on the locust smg. The rest was all my biotic abilities including stasis.
which weapon do you guys pick up on the Collector Ship ? This mission is coming soon for me.
