Why is the Collectors Edition so much more expensive in Britain than the US?

I went into GAME today to put down a deposit on the Mass Effect 3 collectors edition. £10 upfront, and another £59.99 on release day. That's £69.99... rather a lot of money for a video game, but there is a lot of cool stuff included in the package so i didn't think much of it.

Until mentioning it in on a webforum i visit, and somebody replied informing me that it's only $79.96 stateside.

$79.96 is £49.43, so that's a difference over over £20 between the UK and the US.

How exactly is this supposed to be justified?

you guys have public healthcare. dont complain.

honestly though, its probably a shipping thing, probably costs more to ship those copies over there than it does to the US. or maybe its taxed heavily? i dont know englands trade tax laws so i wouldnt know.

VAT, maybe? It will probably be 100 euros in Ireland. If that's the case then I'll give it a miss. I'll pay 50 euro for the standard edition.

It's probably down to profiteering. Even the digital CE is £54.99.

Hey, check out EA store. They have a Digital Deluxe Edition with everything the Collector's Edition has but much cheaper, atleast it was for me here in Sweden.

Unfortunately i'm an xbox gamer, and i generally like to have a physical copy of all my stuff (books, games, films etc), but that's good to know.

£20 seems like a lot, even for import tax, so i'm kind of doubting that's the explanation... though i'll look into it.

It definitely isn't import tax- the regular edition is at a standard price here in the UK, but the CE is disproportionately more expensive (the PC CE at game is double the price of the regular edition).

On top of this the digital collector's edition is £54.99 which is £5 more than the US physical collector's edition (and so in the US CE a lot of extra items come with it and yet it's £5 cheaper than a digital edition. Why?!).

The fact that a Digital edition is so expensive implies to me that EA are maximising the price because they're confident that there will be a high demand for the game.

Ah, thank you. I suppose Chris Priestly's explanation will have to do.

"Cost of games, or of any good, is different based on regions and where you live. To use a made up example, a pile of snow would not sell well in Antartica, but it would sell well in the Sahara desert.

Prices are set by retailers in areas given the demand and scarcity of items and other regional economic variables. While this may seem unfair, it isn't. It is how regional business is done. The only thing you can do is (and I don't mean this in a flippant way) move elsewhere to where costs are cheaper.

If you think it is bad for video games, wait till you try to buy your own home."

I'm not sure that snow is a particularly good analogy, unless units in the UK are going to be purposely limited, but i'll get over it. Fortunately the amount of games being released that i'm interested in enough to want the special edition is sufficiently low that i wont feel too cheated.

Wow. That is really pathetic.

Suddenly Chris Priestley's explanation isn't so satisfying.

Indeed, Chris Priestly's explanation is not very satisfying. It doesn't explain why the CE is disproportionately more expensive than the regular edition and it doesn't explain why the digital CE is so expensive.

I'm curious, how do you guys make the little pound symbol? Is it on your keyboards? Or is there some way to insert special symbols?

Combination of shipping, import duty, and rampant profiteering by the importers. Thats how it is in Australia.
There was a rumour that the CE was going to cost us $170, regardless ofhow strong the AUD was compared to the USD. A quick check on Amazon, I can buy the CE for $80, spend another $20 or so for express (3-5 day) overseas deliver, and still be $70 better off. Importing it myself means I will avoid import duty.
Sure, I have to wait 3-5 days for it to get delivered, but I can then spend that $70 on beer and pizza for when I'm playing.

OP, you might want to look into that yourself.

Question is: Given the beer here in Australia, is that a good thing? :)
BTW this is the way I get my games usually: Order from the US/UK, wait a couple of days longer (give your ethernet cable/wifi router to a friend for save keeping in the time between release and delivery) and save a whole lot of money.

Well - if you watch the trailers - you (England) do seem to get attacked first. Transporting goods into a warzone costs money.

Here in Canada we're rip off 10 bucks for every game.

US pricing: 59.99
Canada pricing: 69.99

Our currency had actually been stronger/same value for over a year.

Thank god they didn't raised it too much here, 79.99.

Too bad X360 games are region locked, So UK gamers can't buy a US version to play.

Aussie beer is fine, as long as you avoid anything from CUB, Tooheys, or Castlemaine XXXX. I'm partial to James Squire Pilsner or Boags Premium.
