A lot of people here keep claiming that the war against the reapers is winnable by simple regular warfare. They say if the races of the galaxy just shoot them with guns then they'll die, and all that stops the races from doing that is the fact that they're not united. Enter Shepard.

I really don't think that's the case. Obviously ME1 set up the reapers as an incredibly strong enemy, what with Sovereign taking out 28 cruisers and who knows what else, but that's not all. The ME3 footage is still painting the reapers as an undefeatable enemy. What we know:

1) The reapers quickly took out the Alliance fleet at Earth  - a thousand human ships if I'm not mistaken, and the human fleet is supposed to be one of the best if not THE best fleet in the galaxy.
2) We see Shepard call in an oribital strike on a small reaper, and all it does it momentarily slow it down.
3) When Shepard fights his way to the Normandy with Anderson, Anderson says "How are you supposed to defeat something so powerful?" and Shepard replies "I don't know". This, IMO, is key, because it shows that whoever wrote that bit of dialogue is intentionally perpetuating the notion that the reapers are an undefeatable enemy. The writer(s) are not trying to retcon the reapers down to being less of a threat than they originally appeared to be.

I think all of these things stronly indicate that in ME3 the reaper threat is stronger than ever, and regular warfare is not going to cut it. Shepard will have to find something else to win, like a deus ex machina device.

P.S. I know there was a thread about this already but it seems to have dropped out off the edge of the world and I can't find it!

The Reapers have a weakness, that's one of the story arcs of ME3, finding that weakness.

I hope so. =]

Edit: are you stating a theory of yours or something that's actually been confirmed?

I agree.

From the Mass Effect 3 Game Informer coverage, it sounds like part of the story is not only fighting the Reapers/Cerberus/other Reaper allies (potentially geth), exploring, gathering allies, and doing side quests to support the war effort, but also to find how to possibly stop them. As Casey Hudson said:

"Exactly how to take down these unstoppable foes will remain a mystery until you witness the battles for yourself."

"There's an evolution of what you think needs to be done to stop the Reapers. Starting with one idea that changes - and there are red herrings - you're trying to shape what this plan should look like."

"Part of the trick is that the nature of that kind of story is that, initially, is has to be kind of hopeless. Then, you start finding reason to believe. But if I tell you that reason to believe right now, then the story up front won't make sense when you play, because your waiting for X to happen. That's the thing we don't want to reveal.

Confirmed. Casey Hudson in Game Informer (post above). Or at least, a 'reason to believe.'

All of those quotes are from the Game Informer article, yes. I believe it may be - I will check the GI website.
