Bah, Humanity is clearly the Russians.

(Or am I getting my AU's mixed up again?)

Renegade Shepard's universe has Humanity as the Russians.
Paragons are Murrica.

Gee, I don't know, invading another people unprovoked and trying to exterminate all sentient life to satisfy the will of their Gods?

The very birth was a mean and violent one and they've been unfriendly ever since.

They all need to be destroyed.

I can understand that, but if you can accept a multiracial society in the first place (one actual different species), then why not romance? Honestly, the universe Mass Effect presents us with is extremely implausible. Dozens of intelligent species living together in one civilization? Trading and making art together? Running governments together? Everyone on roughly the same technological level? They all speak the same language?

It's pretty silly. Truly Mass Effect is just the 19th century IN SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE!

If it's the 19th century in space I want us to be either Great Britain IN SPAAAAAAAAAAACE or America IN SPAAAAAAAAACE.
Because they both do rather well.

Besides that I'm faily sure Saphara meant 20th century (19XX), that century pretty much broke historic British power and prominence.

No, I was indeed speaking about the 19th, an era of colonization and expansion and a variety of great and competing powers. That trend blead into the 20th the effects are still felt today.

It's not an EXACT analogy. It wasn't meant to be.

One of the traits of humans in Mass Effect is American "manifest destiny" with space as our unsettled west. In that regard you could say the batarians are indians.

5-10% of a population count as a whole now? that's new.
Going over the top with defending yourself isn't really the same as being born mean.
In their position humanity in general and America in particular would have done the exact same thing.

By that logic; Some people in the Middle East support terrorism, therefore they should all be destroyed!

For representing different nations, Kasumi clearly isn't American. Neither she thinks she is.

The other 90% let them do it and apparently agreed with it. They're just as bad. The only reason they ever tried to ally with us is because the Heretics finally threatened THEM too.

Well, it's too little too late. I'm not interested in peace with them unless it means controlling or destroying them.

I wouldn't shed any tears, though I think that's taking it to an extreme. I'd settling for having no inolvement or interest in the region whatsoever. However I don't think either scenario is going to happen any time soon.

To make things clear: i do not find interspecies romance "disturbing". I find it implausible. It's something that I have a hard time suspending my disbelief for. It is a worldbuilding issue for me. So, it doesn't matter if I romance a non-human or another character does it. The problematic fact for me is that it's part of this sci-fi universe. Or of almost any sci-fi universe not plausibly built around that premise (which would mean that all species may look different but are biologically closely related). Perhaps it is hard to understand, but I do care about such things.

I guess then that's something that bugs you in general, because interspecies relationships are an old and common feature of almost every sci-fi universe... at least ME's one brutally denies the possibility of hybrid children, that's something that would disappoint me too. Overally... the interspecies relationship as handled in Sci-Fi are always quite implausible, but I don't think that in ME they're handled particularry bad or so, then I'm okay with those. I know that the "it could be worse" thing is a pretty cheap explanation, but really I don't know what else to say. We can only agree to disagree, I suppose.

You just have some expectations of plausibility that I don't share and so I'm able to suspend the disbelief a little be further and enjoy the alien romances. They're both valid positions, I guess. The good thing is that the ME's made-of-multiple-choices gameplay is flexible enough to satisfy decently both of us, which is not something we can say of a movie or a sci-fi tv serial.

Yeah, I do. Talk to Legion someday. The Heretics wanted to party ways and worship the Reapers. The geth knew what Sovereign was and what it offered the Heretics (and thus we can presume they knew what the Heretics would need to give the Reapers). The geth were fine with this. They didn't care at all when the Heretics started attacking organics. They only cared when they learned the Heretics were finally planning to attack them too.

Sexing aliens is only bad when the fluids involved in reproduction are dangerous to each species IE Garrus/Tali.

And their reaction is any different from what ours would be?
I'm pretty sure the default human response to a problem is "it doesn't directly effect me so f*ck those other guys I've got mine"

Maybe, maybe not. Does it matter? I'm as skeptical of the intentions of other humans as I am aliens. Not to mention ruthless and emotionless machines.

If the geth wanted any good will from me they'd have joined the galactic community a long time ago. Instead by going with the exteme isolationist North Korea route they've guaranteed fear, mistrust, and hostility.

Yes because organic beings have such a great history of tolerating things that are radically different from them.

Were I the Geth I'd have bunkered down behind the veil too.

[/quote]Did you misunderstand, or just selectively interpret?

Legion makes no secret that the True Geth knew, stood by, allowed, and ultimately tolerated the Heretic's genocidal ambitions against the rest of the galaxy.

People hate you for existing.
You can do one of several things.
A) Try and make things right (probably won't work)
B) Bunker down and wait for changes
C) Go Necron on em.

B) is probably one of the lowest risk safest options.

Pretty much. Even hostile powers maintain relations and contact on some level.

I'm pretty sure the default human response to a problem is "it doesn't directly effect me so f*ck those other guys I've got mine"

The general human response to an analogous situation like the Geth is also minimal diplomatic relations and distinction between themselves and an invasion force.

If you could only think of three options, you're an example of the problem the Geth have, no a solution.
