So far it seems like the only confirmed crew members are either from the ME1 crew (Liara, VS, Garrus, Tali) or a new character (James Vega). Bioware says that every major character will be featured in the game, but may not be a permanent crew member.
That has me a bit concerned, because there are a lot of crew members from ME2 that I found really interesting and would be pissed if they weren't permanent crew members. Some of them I can understand, but it seems like all of them were in for the long haul at the end of ME2 and it's not like Shepard couldn't use their expertise. I could see Mordin having more pressing concerns, but why would Jack leave the action, especially if she was paragon romanced. A lot of them are LI and it would really ****** me off if my LI wasn't on my permanent crew just so the old gang could get back together or some newbie could join up.
It really doesn't make sense to me since the Reaper invasion is imminent in the Arrival DLC, so why would they ditch Shepard to do something else? Unless that's the reason. Do some leave due to his decision? Or do they leave because the Reapers are coming and they need to take care of other business? I hope each character that isn't permanent at least comes with a good reason for leaving and staying away...like rallying the troops or something.
Is the ME1 Crew Coming Back at the Cost of the ME2 Crew?

They haven't confirmed any ME2 Squadmate (other than Garrus/Tali) yet. But they did confim all would appear in the game somewhere even if not as squadmates. (unless dead) I'm guessing at least some will but they want to keep a few surprises.
They did mention Jack getting a makeover, which would be alot of work to bother with if you weren't going to use her much.
But I really do feel all the LIs at the very least should be on the Squad. With a sad, but possible exception of Thane. (for obvious reasons) That would be fair.

Yes. That makes the most sense to me. I don't believe that none of them come back as crew mates.Cutlass Jack wrote...

Seems like it. The only ME1 character I want to return as a squadmate has already. (Garrus) If they dont bring back Grunt full time or a new Krogan squadmate I will be VERY VERY PISSED.

Yeah, I have this huge fear that the ME2 cast will be reduced to cameos in ME3.

Hoping to see Jack as a permanent squad mate in ME3, especially because she was my Renegade's paramour and those sexy tatoos. Can't let a character with a massive makeover go to waste. And as much as I enjoyed Mordin's sharp yet blunt character I'm glad we can at least see him for a mission. Not having him on my squad leaves some room for more potential. Either way, in or out, I'm glad he's still in. Mordin for the win!

Sadly almost every squadmate had unfinished business
Jack for example wants to take revenge on the people who did what they did to her
Samara said multiple times ingame that she would return to that place to 'help' (Omega, Tuchanka)
But I agree that at least your LI should be in your squad...

At the moment it looks like thats exactly whats happening even the views we have of Mordin and Legion seem to support a temp at best role for them. Although they did mention Jack's redesign which does seem like a lot of work to do for a temp squadmate.
Personally i could live without most of the me2 crew as full squadmates, some make sense not to return as anything more than cameo/temp roles but the LI's don't fall into this category imo.
Not to mention the fact that considering we're fighting cerberus not having Miranda/Jacob back seems really stupid, so i'm hoping what we'll get is what we have now plus the 4 remaining LI's from me2.
Giving us a crew of VS,Liara,Garrus,Tali,Vega,Thane,Jack,Miranda,Jacob optimisitic i know but one can hope.

I'm not going to worry just yet. There's been talk that squadmates are going to work differently than the first two games, so it may not even be 'temporary' and 'permanent'. Maybe we'll pick people up after the mission they're involved with if we had a good rapport with them in ME2. Perhaps we'll have people like Mordin who don't actually go into battle with you, but stay on the Normandy and work. They'll find a way to incorporate everyone.
