I recently purchased the Mass Effect 2 Soundtrack (I already have ME1's), and, for the life of me, I can't figure out why Bioware wanted to exclude him from the trilogy's finale. He's amazing, and the music is all inspiring; especially when I sit down and get flare up the creative juices and write/draw. If anyone out there is better suited to a job he's orchestrated since the very beginning, shouldn't it be Jack Wall, whose themes for the series are always familiar to any fan?

Unless it's financial, or just because he rejected the offer of returning, I don't see why he wasn't hired again.

Thoughts?

The Mass Effect 1 soundtrack was a masterpiece. The old synths, soundscapes and the use of strings in all the right places. Vigil, Ilos battle theme, Virmire music, Noveria and so on. Loads of great tracks.

I can't say the same thing about Mass effect 2 though. Totally forgettable music most of the time. Cheesy orchestral scores that didn't go anywhere made up most of the soundtrack and totally killed the mood for me.

Let's hope for a return of the synths in Mass Effect 3. No more cheese, please.

"Well, I've had a great relationship with BioWare for five years, and I
think, you know, as with any important relationship it's complicated,"
Wall said. "Now I'm working with other clients and it feels fresh to me
and I think they feel the same way, so I think it's just time to move
on. I have nothing but love for those people. I'm sure I'll see them
again. It's just time for a break, maybe."

This quote is easy to find.

Silly me. If only I knew that quote word for word. Glad it was on even terms, though. Still going to miss the guy. From what I heard today on Clint's work I'm not as concerned as I was before. Just mildly.

What...the ME3 trailer? That's not Clint's stuff.

Oh, god, no. Nothing was more horrid than the synth sountrack of ME1. The only saving grace of the ME1 track was that you could disable the music and listen to your own track.

Clint Mansell is pretty amazing, that's a given. I've loved everything of his I've heard.

The only problem is, that Mass Effect, much like Star Wars, is really, truly, defined by it's music. And that music is by Jack Wall and Sam Hulick. Without the Mass Effect theme, I don't think ME would remotely be the same game. Without stuff like the suicide mission music, it definitely wouldn't be.

So here's the question - will Mansell build on the foundation that Wall and Hulick have built, or will he disregard that, and do his own thing? The only previous example we have of Mansell working with a pre-established property which already had a distinct musical score (apart from Black Swan, of course) is Doom. Now, Mansell did an awesome soundtrack for Doom, far better than the movie deserved.

But did he play with the classic Doom theme at all, or seem to work from it?

Only in the tiny-est possible way. I mean, the general "metallic" sound of Doom, sure? But Doom's highly distinctive and somewhat rocking music? He uses, as far as I can tell, a single riff based on Doom a few times in the first-person bit of the film.

I mean, here's the "Doom theme" (the E1M1 music, it's riffed off in various places in the game) done "properly":

Here's the only bit Mansell's Doom soundtrack which seems to reference it:

(Wait for it).

So that's my concern, that there's a possibility he will give us a really good soundtrack, but one that isn't really a "Mass Effect" soundtrack, which would be quite a let-down for the final game in the series. Now if he's already said that's not going to be the case, that he intends to work from the current stuff and make it his own, then I can't find it with Google, but please let me know if he has.

I think ME1>ME2 soundtrack. I'm not too supportative of either tbh. ME2 had TIM Theme, Tali Theme, and Samara Theme -- the rest felt kind of bland to me. ME1 had a dozen good songs I thought.

I'm really sad we lost Jack Wall. He was one of my three favourite composers. Honestly i doubt in Mansell OST in ME3. He's film guy, not gaming guy! BW at least could hire Hanz Zimmer. Crysis2 OST is just amazing!

Clint Mansell is a worthy replacement for Jack Wall and Sam Hulick. I love his Moon soundtrack.

Hans Zimmer, eh? The guy who keeps remaking the same track over and over? You've got to be kidding.. Clint Mansell at least knows how to make some pretty memorable music (Moon, Fountain and PI) but Hans Zimmer is just.... pure garbage.

But each to its own.

....you do realise that Hans Zimmer writes predominately for films?

I'm suprised this keeps popping up.

For me, personally, I'm going to miss Jack Wall, Sam Hulick, Jimmy Hinson and the rest because I feel like we've been on a journey together and they won't be there for the end of it (corny, I know).  They built amazing soundtracks for both ME games.  No question.  And they are incredibly talented in their own rights, each of them has some great music to their credit, not just ME stuff.  Matter of fact, the 'You can have mine' link in my sig will take you to Jimmy Hinson's page (or you can go to www.biggiantcircles.com).

If there's a man who can take over where Jack Wall and co. left off, it's Clint Mansell.  He is literally an icon in the music sountrack business (Requiem For A Dream, Moon, Sahara, Black Swan).  He can capture the mood perfectly with his music, from action adventure to serious introspection.  I'm not worried in the least that he'll do an excellent job with the ME3 soundtrack.

The reason it comes up is because unlike other games, the ME series is defined by it's music, as I was saying. It's extremely distinctive and very strong, with only a handful of weak or bland tunes, and that's over two games with a ton of music, and at it's peak (suicide mission, particularly), it's some of the best music you'll find in a computer game.

So people don't want to lose that.

You're right that if there's anyone who can do it, it's Clint Mansell. The only question is will he take over where they left off, or will he dump what's been done and do his own thing? I honestly hope it's the former. I'm sure the soundtrack will be excellent either way, but it's the question of whether it'll be an "ME" sound track by Clint Mansell or just a really good Clint Mansell soundtrack that happens to be attached to an ME game, if you see the difference.

I wish we'd seen him work with established music before where he took that music and worked from it, but we haven't really (as he disregarded Doom's music, or so it seems to me, and didn't alter Swan Lake much, of course).

They didn't exclude him. He decided not to continue working on it, not sure why.. it's the last ME with Shepard.
