Does anyone know if that "basket of birdseed" next to Shale serves ANY purpose at all? Everytime I do this quest, I always think that there must be something more to the basket, than just walking up and clicking on it, so that it just tells me it is empty.

It's there to lure pigeons to come and relieve themselves on Shale. The villagers thought it looked "quaint".
As mentioned, it serves no actual use. It's just a little extra thrown in.
